I'm trying to buy my first pair free but it is charging me a bundle fee of $39.85. I can't figure out what this fee is, and I suppose my first pair ISN'T free.

Are you selecting from the First Pair Free tab on the homepage? If you have pay attention to the fees associated with your lens package. If all is standard there is no extra charge.

I would not do business with them at all. I ended up having to get my credit card company to retrieve all they had charged me when my glasses NEVER arrived. They tried to blame me. There are better and more reliable online places to buy glasses. Please search them before buying here. There are at least two domestic ones that are incredibly fast and trustworthy.

When you go through adding lens options it will offer you various extras. You need to select/deselect the things you don't want. (The $5 AR coating is worth it btw, if your eyes are at all sensitive to light reflections). If you can't deselect the other options, try a different web browser. I have found one or two browsers to be glitchy sometimes on a mobile device.
