Hi,
Whatever appliance you buy (it doesn't matter where), it breaks either during its first year, or it works long enough. However "long enough" means different life span now. I used to be until you are tired of it and want to replace. Now it's shorter period of time.
If the appliance breaks down during the first year, you are covered by manufacturer's warranty.
Example: my old dryer worked for 16 years, then there was no sense to repair it (too expensive). The store I bought it wanted to sell me an extended warranty - I refused. During those 16 years I'd pay twice as much for the extended warranty as the new dryer costs. They would fix it for free, but I'd still have a 16 years old dryer...
So it make sense to calculate the cost of the insurance during the average lifetime of your appliance. Yes, the extended warranty is the insurance you buy. As for any insurance product, it expected to benefit the company, not you. Otherwise they won't be in business.
So you decide. Maybe your appliance will break down right after one year... and you don't have insurance. Maybe you'll pay at least the cost of the new unit before you need repair... Maybe you'll want to upgrade in a few years? Or you will easily replace if it breaks down? Again - you weight your options, then decide.
