I recently signed up but have not used Uber. I like the idea that I do not have to figure out and pay the tip. I am concerned about the reviews that say rates are not standardized in any way, and price gouging is common. I would like to have a better understanding of how much rates can fluctuate and how I can know up front how much I will be charged.

You can be charged up to 9.0 times a regular rate. I was quoted a $33 estimate, and they took $285. This was a 23 minute, 13 mile ride. You do the math on that; and decide if you think it's price gouging or not.
