I've had a real good experience with Bikesdirect. I've ordered 8 bikes (some were gifts for friends and family) which include 4 electric cruisers, one mountain bike for my wife, and 2 more high end fat bikes, and a big bmx. All of them except the last one were perfect, and really nice solid bikes (I like bikes, working on them, etc, and have a selection of old and new). The last one (Big Wake Gravity big BMX 29er) had a little clicking noise. I swapped out pedals, cranks, bottom bracket trying to find the click. Turns out it was the freewheel. I bought a new one off Amazon for 10 bucks. I didn't even complain, and Larry at Bikes Direct was super fast responsive, and gave me 20 bucks back on my order. Also, in trying to find the click, I took apart the whole bike, expecting light grease on bearings etc. Everything was greased properly from Bikesdirect, so I didn't really need to do that after all. Anyway, I think their stuff is high quality for the price, and wouldn't have bought some of the bikes - but they were so affordable that it worked out. If I only got one bike, and it was good, I'd have a harder time recommending them. But, I've had 8 solid bikes from them that are all really nice. So, don't worry and just order the bike you want. It will be great.

First off, I agree with most of the price comments here. You CAN save hundreds but the reason you do is that these bikes are drop shipped from overseas. They are nowhere near ready to ride out of the box. If you are already spending hundreds but also saving hundreds, why not spend the $50-100 that your LBS will charge to build the bike right? For the under $300 fixies and coffee bikes? Maybe not, but you are talking about top of the line and very high end components on these bikes that require fine tuning. If you don't know how, disregard that video on the website site about assembly and go to your LBS. Don't be ashamed, tell them you have a boxed bike that needs building and tuning and if they give you crap about buying online tell them that this bike came out of the same (or better) overseas factory that their Treks, Giants, and Specialized did. You just saved several hundred bucks. The best case is that you develop a rapport with your LBS and they help you down the road. Personally, I am a Performance Buyers Club member and all my labor is half off, so building the bike didn't even cost me that much.
Hope this helps.

I was looking for a very specific bicycle brand and found an amazing selection at BD. I had no idea there were that many models within this brand subset until I went to BicyclesDirect.

So not only was the choice of models perfect for my needs, but so were the frame sizes. I am a taller person and it was no problem finding the bike I wanted in the perfect size.

You know what would have happened if I had walked into a local bike shop, they would have pushed me into another model or brand because their smaller selection of 60+ cm bikes would have left me empty-handed. Don't get me wrong, I love my local bike shops but I prefer to hold all the cards when it comes to spending a few grand on a bike. Cutting out the middleman meant that I could easily buy a full carbon bike and get out for hundreds less than going to a storefront.

So, the bike arrives 1 day after I ordered it (I live in Texas), and I was well-packaged and I dropped it off to a local bike shop and had it put together ($75) and paid an extra $50 for a fitting.

The bike is gorgeous and there were no issues with missing parts or anything else like that, the communication has been great in general and I am completely happy.

This was a great experience and I know yours will be too!

Ordered a cycling road bike a Motobecane Grand Premio. Paid over $700 dlls for the bike. Bike arrived within the time frame specified. As I was assembling my bike I could not get the front wheel on due to fork drop out being bent from drop damage. I so wanted to ride so i pryed the fork drop in slits enough to drop front wheel in, and i rode. As i rode and have been riding now just past my 400th mile it is in the back of my head that the drop in slits could crack due the dropping and the prying apart. So I contacted Larry and sent him pics of damage and low and behold, he sent me out new fork assembly. I could not be happier, Larry your truly what customer service is all about. I highly recommend BikesDirect.com to anyone looking to save but still get a great quality bike. In the future i will look to BikeDirect.com for any future bike purchases... thanks Larry

Great bikes, great service
September 15, 2019

I've owned a few copies of the Dawes Streetfighter, their entry-level flat-bar singlespeed bike. While its components are basic, they've been reliable enough to serve a daily commute over thousands of miles and have survived rain, snow, and the salt/sand mix that comes with it.

Recently, the front wheel was stolen, unsurprising given that I'm in a large city. But the timing was terrible, as it was a busy time at work and the bike cuts down the commute time considerably. As soon as I got home after the discovery, I sent a message over to BikesDirect. Larry answered, and informed that a near-identical replacement wheel was available for a reasonable price. I sent payment, and... had a wheel before half a week had gone by! It's hard to express what a relief it is to be back on the road so quickly - it helped take the sting out of a theft.

Post-sales service and support is important in these situations, and they've come through repeatedly for me. Really appreciate Larry and the rest of BikesDirect!

Home Run!
June 15, 2015

I purchased a Motobecane Titanium LeChampion from BikesDirect
On the recommendation of a local competetive rider.
It arrived one day early, in perfect condition and was easy to assemble.
The email communication from BikesDirect has been comprehensive and timely.
The value was spectacular and I would highly recommend them and would definitely use them again - but I think this bike is " the end of the rainbow " for me:-)
Thanks BikesDirect. You made it easy... and you got it right.
This was a very big purchase for me, Thank You again for making it go so well

One star for bad organization, I bought a road bike from this place, after two days I got an email saying that it was shipped with an actual tracking #. A day after I get another EMAIL stating that: even though there was an email saying that it was shipped, the item was not shipped after making me wait TWO DAYS!. One star for offering $50 off on the next item, but I don't want to order something and having the same thing done again.

I wrote several emails and the response was wanting endless pictures. The frame of the derailleur was clearly tweaked and the chain fell off the cog on the arm of the derailleur which should be impossible. The bike was or seems to be solid but the drailleur is unadjustable. I told the reps at bikes direct that I had tried everthing in several emails and the last response was him trying to suggest adjustments and stating that the cable seemed loose. He is either not reading my emails or is just going through the motions. So after not getting response after several days I bought a new derailleur on amazon out of my own pocket and also bought a chain tool. Becuase I will be replacing the derail at my own cost. They seem to be a good place to buy a bike but you will not get any sort of customer service.

I cant say enough bad things about Bikes Direct. When the bike arrived, there not one, but two components that were bad. Rather than apologize and offer replacements, I was pointed to videos on how to repair these parts. It took a month of fighting before they finally replaced the bent components. Recently, I had a bike shop and an independent repair professional try to remove one of the tires, as I could not (and Im fairly experienced with this). One pro couldnt get if off at all. The shop said the fit was ridiculously tight, and it was absurd to expect a consumer to be able to do this on the trail. This is a safety hazard as you could be miles out a trail with a flat. Larry from Bikes Direct response was that he mounted 100s of these. Good for you Larry, but two professional bike people who I took these tires to had difficulties. One could not remove it without damaging the tire. Larry offered me a tire at cost, but the deal he offered me was exactly the same as I could buy it brand new on the web. Since this fiasco, I purchased a second bike from another online retailer and it was much better and customer service was much better. However, if you like to argue, fight, and fix a brand new bike, Bikes Direct is for you.

Great place to get a bike when orders go correctly and you know your bike size.

I purchased a high end titanium 29er from them in the past, and it was a flawless transaction at a great price. The bike has been phenomenal.

I decided to share and comment on their Facebook post in order to get on the waiting list to order one of their new fat bikes. I shared the posting on the bike group that I administer on Facebook, and at least one of the members put an order in for one. I was psyched when they sent me a Paypal invoice and paid right away. After a few weeks, others I shared the info with started to get their tracking numbers. I had to email bikesdirect to find out if mine was on the way and it was then they informed me my bike was damaged in the warehouse and I could either get my money refunded or get a smaller size in a month! I had no choice but to get my money back.

It would have been nice to have more options or at least been informed without me having to do the chasing to get the info. I most likely won't be recommending them in the future.

I've purchased two bikes from Bikesdirect.com. The first one purchased I've had for two years with no issues.

The second bike that I purchased arrived a few days ago and I had professionally assembled. Unfortunately, on my very first ride the back tire blew out exactly 1.02 miles in to the ride.

I took the bike back to my local bike shop who indicated that the inner tube was no good and they replaced for a nominal fee (~$22).

I immediately reached out to bikesdirect (Larry) to see what they could do here. Initially, Larry indicated that the tire was not properly inflated and that wasn't covered under their warranty. The bike store, of course, says the exact opposite.

Look, I don't know who is right or wrong here but Larry offered to send me another inner tube free of charge. Of course, we already paid to have the problem fixed and the tube does me no good now but it's at least good to have on hand in case another tire goes out.

I appreciate Larry's response, while not perfectly ideal (a $22 credit would have been nice) and since we've had no issues with the first bike in two years, I think a 4 star rating is warranted here.

I would consider purchasing another bike from bikesdirect.com

Immediately after receiving my bike in Mid-October, a single-speed with disc brakes (Gravity Velocity to be specific), I noticed some questionable things like the rotors being warped and the disc brakes themselves being spongy (something you should NEVER find with disc brakes). I figured I would just bring it to the shop to have it professionally assembled and have the rotors fixed, assuming these issues were due to error in shipping rather than manufacturing.

Two days ago, after riding less than 100 miles on the bike, I was riding home when the right pedal started to feel funny. I dismounted to inspect the pedal/crank and the pedal fell out! It had completely stripped the inside of the crank!

At this point, I'm livid. I take multiple pictures and write an email to BD to explain the situation (just as the website instructs). I expect them to be reasonable, I mean this kind of thing is unacceptable. I receive an email shortly after saying that I'm out of luck. The BD employee told me 9 times out of 10 this happens because the pedals were installed on the wrong crank arm. This to me is unbelievable. First of all, that leaves 10% of your customers that install everything correctly without any other option! Now I have to pay for a new crank arm AND have to get it installed. Thanks for throwing me under the bus, BD. I followed all the directions AND had the bike PROFESSIONALLY assembled. I will never again purchase anything from BD, and neither should you. I am going to buy from a local shop from now on.
