Did a lot of research when buying bike for wife. Fuji made a 44cm unlike many current manufacturers who seem to be eliminating different bike models from their lineups during tough economic times. I am no cyclist but read a lot of proper fitting, sizing, had her on my bike to see shoulder width, basic stuff from what I read on internet sites. I checked her inseam, measure arm reach, basically at 4'11 she needed 44cm frame or a bike with 650 tires. I didn't want a 650cm tire for her even though it would have worked, I just thought she could be comfortable on 700s. Plus most bikes with 650 for females are very expensive (over $900) my budget was $500 and bikesdirect totally came through. Perfect fit. She actually said that never in her adult life has she felt so comfortable on road bike. Local bike shop did build and they were impressed with bikesdirect product and price. Bike was packaged well, arrived quickly, customer service was easy to contact through email and phone. I would definetly buy again. Wish they sold kids bikes.
I've have my bike for almost two months now. The bike (Windsor - The Hour) was simple to put together and seems well made. Only the simple stuff (pedals, handlebars, etc.) needs to be assembled on the frame. All the geartrain components are already taken care of. The wheels have gone slightly out of true pretty quickly and the spokes could have been tighter in the first instance, but nothing a spoke tool can't fix.
I've had several roadbikes/single-speed bikes in carbon, steel, and aluminium, and bought this one since I moved to a new place and wasn't able to bring over my old ones. It's slightly heavier than my last steel frame single speed (a masi), but is a comfy ride and is nimble enough. Great for around the town and speeding past typical mountain/commuter bikes, but of course any proper geared alloy/carbon roadbike or a more aggressive track bike is going to be quicker. The components are also pretty solid considering what I paid for it.
There was an issue with a defective freewheel that constantly made noise in my initial delivery, but I emailed their customer service and their representative (Larry) was very helpful and quickly sent over a proper shimano replacement. I've recommended bikesdirect to friends who are looking for new, inexpensive and bikes.
This is a great concept with nice and undisputable customer services that could bring the larger world to a little global village
I ordered a Ladies Windsor Kensington 8 Speed and I absolutely love it! My entire experience with Bikes Direct (BD) was nothing short of spectacular. My shipment came in 2 separate packages and arrived in 4 business days (shipped from TX to NY)! Amazing! With all of my excitement I worried about parts not arriving and immediately after receiving only one package (not knowing if I was supposed to receive both on the same day - I worried... it's natural. Lol) I contacted BD with my concerns and within 4 minutes LARRY! A response! I was like "whoa"! Awesome! This gentleman has just made my entire day... and he wasn't a robot... Larry was very helpful and made sure I was in receipt of everything my order contained. Very patient and kind, and made my experience shopping with BD that much better! Customer service is everything! A big shout out to LARRY! You're terrific and should definitely be recognized for your services! I've already recommended BD to a few friends in the market for a bike and if they are ever in need of customer support, I hope they get LARRY!
All in all, putting the bicycle together was fairly simple, as I have some moderate experience. Within 3 hours I had my beautiful Windsor ready to ride. I took her for a spin and the ride was absolutely comfortable, smooth, sturdy and secure! As far as I'm concerned, I could not find anything wrong with it; no major scratches, just a pin scratch which is very minor and cannot be seen unless you're crazy and looking for that exact scratch in that exact spot... It's perfect and as described. I received all the goodies listed in the description and please with the quality of the bicycle, and the services rendered by the team of Bikes Direct, and special thanks to Larry for wonderful customer support!
Taking my new bike out for a spin tomorrow in Prospect Park, NY and picnic with my friends and my new ride by my side. Very happy! A million thanks!
I have to say that my first purchase 5 years ago was real good and smooth. But maybe I was either lucky in my choice or just new to their game. You should definitely heed a lot of the negative informed talk you hear of the modus operandi of this business. They do save you money. However any business that is not brick and mortar should save you money over the many that are. So saving money is a given. First off, they are (in my opinion) a shill type of operation. They promote certain bikes that are geared toward highest profit and which are not necessarily a good deal. Be wary of seemingly outside or seemingly independent media promoting such bikes. I suspect that such promotions are part of their shill sales gimmicks; as is the overblown retail comparisons. Those retail comparisons to me are meaningless. Because their bikes are 'assembled parts' under their name and exclusively sold by them. So where does the retail price comparisons gimmick come from? My guess is that it comes from the tally of the sum of the parts, and not the whole bike itself. Thus, if all brick and mortar bike shops did that, then they too could use such inflated retail comparisons. One note on their Motobecane line which I believe is a big part of their shill game: BD paid for the name rights. And this overhead expense is passed on to the buyer. Do consider that in your overall purchase assessment. Is their a good buy to be had at BD? Yes, but you need to do your bike research to become knowledgeable. The great buy I was lucky enough to obtain 5 years ago was the Windsor Dover 3 (comfort bike). These Windsor bikes in any category are terrific bikes with solid and well balanced frame design. Do not hesitate to buy if comparing and trying to decide. Update: I just bought the 2016 Windsor Dover 3 (now with disc brakes) and absolutely love it! This bike puts my friend's 2016 Motobecane Jubilee Deluxe to shame. So enough said about this Motobecane line in this category.
This is a company that wants your money but provides no help. The only way to get their attention is to stop payment.
I bought a cruiser for my daughter and she loves it.
Rides it to her friend's house and around the neighborhood no problem
2014 Motobecane Mirage
Butted CrMoly 4130
I wanted to wait until I had the bike awhile to write a review. I've had the bike a year and have had no problems. I chose the ChroMolly 4130 because I like the ride of a steel bike.
This was my first order with Bikes Direct. There was no problem with the shipping, box arrived fine. I was informed every step of the way. The bike was packed very very well. There was no dings on it at all. Assembly was no problem and anyone with reasonable mechanical knowledge can put this together. I's not a big deal. I had some parts I didn't know what they were to so I emailed customer service and they shot an answer right back with pictures! I did some tweaks here & there on my own. A few fine tune adjustments, nothing big. I was really surprised to find break handles in the middle of the handle bars. I like that. I put my favorite seat on it, that's the only thing I changed. As soon as it was assembled the tires were kissing blacktop. Very nice ride.
Overall I am very satisfied. For a China build everything was perfect. The welds were clean, Shifting was smooth, paint job is excellent, packing was terrific, customer service was right on it. Would I deal with Bikes Direct again? Absolutely.
I got a great deal and a great bike.
Thank you Bikes Direct
BRAVO!
Alan F.
I'm so happy BikesDirect exists! Having bicycle shop experience lets me buy at a much reduced price, and get a great value.
Note: anyone buying a bike-in-a-box should know that it should be PROPERLY ASSEMBLED by a professional. NO-BIKE is properly adjusted at the factory, not even $500-$700-Treks/Giants/Specialized ETC... It takes skill & special tools for the hub bearings alone. It's worth the extra~$50-$75 to have it assembled Properly. The first thing to check after [or at any LBS], is the fr. & rear hub bearings, if they grind at-all, WAY too tight, especially on quick-release wheels, due-to closing the skewer, actually makes the adjustment tighter, which causes bearing/race/cup damage. If you watch a video on assembly, and they don't include r. Hub adj.[including removal of the freewheel/cassette to get that-sides locknut], trueing wheels, toeing brake pads. Removing & cleaning of crank-arms & spindle, or suggests an assembly should only take 45-60 minutes IS NOT WORTH WATCHING!
Thank You BikesDirect for allowing folks to puchase superior products at very-reasonable prices.
Unfortunately, you get what you pay for and they charge you for a return even if it is in the 30 day refund period. Pure rubbish
For a decade I have perused the Bikes Direct website ever curious whether those amazing prices for such amazing bikes and top level groupsets are legitimate. I've always been frustrated why bikes are darn expensive when the root technology (a twin triangle frame) hasn't changed in over a hundred years. My hypothesis was that the annual markups are primarily marketing rather than value. After my 20 year old trek was stolen, I decided to pull the trigger with Bikes Direct to test the theory that one can get a great bike with great components for far less (my thinking is that they all come from the same factory in Taiwan anyways). Well, consistent with the positive You Tube reviews I watched, my test supports my hypothesis. I'm thoroughly enjoying my flawless Motobecane Titanium Gravel bike with Ultegra Groupset. It arrived quickly and the setup was both fun and quick.
That said, I did goof the setup. This is my first thru axle bike and I mistakenly threw away one of the front hub end caps along with the protective plastic shipping wheel guard. That front wheel eventually became unrideable. Larry with Bikes Direct's customer service team didn't hesitate to replace the wheel (even though the fault was my own). At my request, Larry also looked into letting me buy a new front wheel (since it really was my fault). He came back with a very fair price and I couldn't be happier.
If anyone else has grown curious about the ever increasing price for new bikes when technology has tended to reduce pricing, I encourage you to consider Bikes Direct.
Are Motobecane good bikes? Yes and no…
I bought a Motobecane HAL5 2018 from BikesDirect… 2 years after, I damaged one of the suspension linkages trying to replace a bearing that got stuck… When I went to the BikesDirect website I realized that there are no phone numbers, no names, nothing… Only an automated phone number for sales. So, the only way to reach "customer service" is through an email… When you write it takes 24 to 48 hours to get an answer… I just wanted a part number to buy from them. But it turns out that they don't have spare parts for their own bikes! A bike that is just 2 years old. At the beginning I thought they were out of stock but in reality they don't have spare parts like any other bike brand… They do have wheels and other few generic components but they don't have specific frame replacement parts. So, I tried to reach Motobecane USA website where they don't have contact information such as phones or email. They'll try to make you believe BikesDirect is only a distributor but it turns to be the same business… After 3 emails with BikesDirect "customer service" (Larry) and questioning why they don't have replacement parts for bikes less than 2 years old, they stop answering my emails…In a nutshell, while their bikes are decent but outdated (geometry/components) they basically don't have replacement parts, no contact phones and a careless email customer service… That's why I don't recommend to buy from BikesDirect… Better get another brand where you can get parts and at least a phone for customer service… Don't take my word for granted… Just check their website.
Once I got my bike put together, I replied to *******@aol.com shipping email with the following message:
Hi,
I got the bike is great shape. Had it put together and it's been performing great, except for one thing that really bothers me. Please see the attached photo. Instead of a Motobecane logo on the the head stock, I see a Gravity logo. What's going on here?
This the the response I got from *******@aol.com:
Hello,
I am so sorry to see that, luckily the bike is a motobecane and since the motobecanes and gravity's are made in the same factory (4 factories make 99% of all bikes on the market) it looks like it was just a small mix up on there part.
The good news is you have a one of a kind bike and will not see another one like it.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
Best regards,
Larry@ Bikes Direct
Well it is obvious that my Motobecane frame came from the same factory that puts stickers on the Gravity frames, but is my Motobecane Fantom29 Expert really one of a kind because someone was out of his/her mind the day stickers and frames were passed out at the factory? You be the judge, see attached pic.
I am proud of my Motobecane, but now I have to explain to others about the damn Gravity logo. AND, if I remove it, then that would void the warranty (http://motobecane.com/warranty/). Then on second thought, I don't believe that anyone will warranty the bike purchased at BikesDirect.
I would give the bike a 3 for the one of a kind Gravity logo on a Motobacne, and BikesDirect a 2 for an assinine response.
Hello, it's great that I found your site. I can't imagine my life without cycling. Thanks to you I can enjoy it on my new bike with my parents.
The staff here care and won't try to rip you off, they give you the best bang for your buck and treat their customers well.
I bought the GRAVITY FSX 1.0 BICYCLE because I needed a bike to work for Uber as a messenger in NYC, as I've been unemployed for a while and needed to do something for extra cash. The bike looks great and even better, as I added a few extra accessories to it! I get compliments on it wherever I go. I got it for a great price and is definitely worth more than what I paid in comparison to other bicycles in the same class which go for more. It rides wonderfully. After about a couple of days I noticed there was an evident problem with the wheels, especially the rear with the cassette gears attached to it, they were noticeably wobbling. I emailed Larry at the service department who expressed his concern, apologized for any inconvenience and he immediately told me he was sending out a brand new upgraded set of premium wheels to me and would reimburse me for the new tubes I would have to purchase, as the the.new wheels accepted a different kind of valve system than the original wheels. I received them in about 3 days and they were exactly as he said an upgrade for sure, they look great and I did a little search online and they basically retail for 2/3 of the price I paid for the bike including shipping! He also reimbursed me for the tubes plus a fee extra dollars for my inconvenience of having to go back to my local bike shop to do the work necessary to swap the old out FOT the new. In short, I am an extremely SATISFIED CUSTOMER AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. YOU WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE DISSATISFIED!
GREAT JOB BIKES DIRECT, GREAT JOB!
My wife and I were looking for a couple simple but dependable bikes to take leisurely rides on, looking at the cruiser style bikes. We ended up buying the EZ Cruz bikes from Bikes Direct. I couldn't believe how fast they arrived, the boxes were in perfect condition, as were the bikes inside, packaged and wrapped carefully. Putting the bike together was a breeze, though there isn't much to a single speed bike, but still had no issues. After putting the bikes together, I found a small scratch on my wife's bike, took a pic of it and sent it in an email to customer service. Within an hour, I got a response from Larry offering to make things right with this minor problem. I won't go into what he did for us to resolve the issue, but I will say that it was more than I ever imagined and am extremely happy with the customer service I received. Thank you Larry! The price of the bikes were very good for the quality of bikes we got, better then any bike we would have bought in a local big box type store. Great experience all around and would definitely order bikes again from Bikes Direct when the time comes.
I wanted to add to my original review, as mentioned in the first review, there was a minor issue in which I noted I contacted Customer Service and had an immediate response. Larry mailed out something to us to resolve the issue and when the package arrived, something was wrong with one of the items, it came broke, something that wasn't obvious when just putting it in a box to ship. I emailed Larry and explained the situation and his response came immediately stating another was already in the mail and it arrived two days later. This is awesome Customer Service that I wish all companies would offer. Thanks again Larry and Bikes Direct!
Answer: I would recommend that you think about a hybrid bike first, as the tires are larger & the 26 inch wheels are a bit stronger. Also, you will be more comfortable riding on an upright position. If you like it, use it to loose weight while saving for a decent road bike.
Answer: Hi - the bike depends upon the type of riding you want to do and what you want out of riding. Do you want comfort? Durability? Speed? More upright riding position? Definitely want to look at bikes with larger tires as they would be more comfortable. The CycleCross type bikes are fast but have a bit larger tires for more durability and comfort than a skinny tire road bike. Check out the OmniStrada which have knobbier and larger tires than the regular cross bikes. They also have top tech tubeless compatible rims which you can easily convert with sealant and kit to being virtually flat free :) Check them out: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/cross_bikes.htm
Answer: No. The bike should come ready to ride.
Answer: I ordered after hours on Wednesday night, recived confirmation of payment via PayPal instantly. Email receipt received Friday morning.
