Do not get Google Fi!
April 29, 2021

First be very careful to find out how much a monthly plan will actually cost, secondly they can not seem to cancel service correctly or promptly, thirdly even when you return a phone and have proof that it was delivered over a month ago they will take money from your account and say that you have to provide them proof of the return and they will still say it is pending! This has been an absolute nightmare! DO NOT GO TO GOOGLEFI!

September 26, 2021

MY EXPERIENCE WITH GOOGLE FI HAS BEEN THE WORST THING THAT I HAVE EVER HAD TO GO THROUGH, JOINED FI ON SEP 22 ON THE 23 I CALLED AND THEY COULD NOT GET ME A #, THEY REDID THE PROCESS AND TOLD ME TO WAIT ANOTHER 24 HOURS, I WAITED TILSEP 26 STILL NO SERVICE SO I CALLED AGAIN AND WAS SHUFFLED AROUND FOR 30 MINUTES THAEN ASKED FOR A SUPERVISOR WAITED ON PHONE AGAIN FOR 40 TO 45 MIN. HE CAME BACK AND TOLD ME IT WILL BE ATLEAST 48 TO 72 HOURS FOR THEM TO GIVE ME A # THATS A TOTAL OF SEVEN DAYS JUST TO ACTIVATE PLUS 3 CALLS AND HOURS ON PHONE. SUPERVISOR HELPED ME CANCELL SERVICE AND I ASKED HIM FOR EMAIL TO MAKE COMPLAINT AND HE HUNG UP PHONE. TERRIBLE ALL AROUND EXPERIANCE WITH THIS COMPANY!

You have to have a very specific phone to use this service but if you a; lready have a Nexus 6, Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P then jump on board. $20 for unlimited talk and text, and the $10 a GB for Data. If you can use mostly WiFi you can save some money. Plus this works in other countries making travel for me much easier now.
Give them a shot... I LOVE GOOGLE!

I thought this would be a good phone plan as a digital nomad, but it's been horrible. I need a plan that's reliable for work as I travel, but Google Fi is about as unreliable as it gets.

I keep running into problems because there are intricacies of how I'm allowed to use the phone plan that aren't stated clearly on the website. They use confusing language that's intended to sell, not inform, which has left me stranded without a phone several times by this point.

For example they state that you can use your phone around the world in all the countries listed, which is why I got the phone in the first place. However, they don't state that there's a yearly limit on how much you can be out of country until they send you an email cutting you off, which left me stranded in the middle of the jungle in Nicaragua for over a month before I could get to a place where there was a SIM card.

They also state that have full coverage around the world in listed countries, but I regularly hit points where they just sent a text saying they wouldn't cover me there.

They also are completely unclear about when they slow down your hotspot data, which yet again has bit me this month as they sent me an email stating they'd slow me down at 35G, but they "slowed down" (aka unusable) at 15G.

Then service reps do absolutely nothing to resolve the situation, even when I try to throw money at the problem. Most phone companies care about keeping their business and are willing to work with their clients to resolve problems. But every time I've reached out to customer service, it has been a horrible experience.

I would never in a million years recommend this phone plan to someone who travels who needs a reliable phone plan. Zero stars.

In search of a cheaper cell service last year, I landed on Project Fi, before it was turned to Google Fi. I was paying $80/month 2 lines w/ 2gb data with Verizon. I mainly rely on WiFi, so getting a large or unlimited data plan is not necessary for me, so I was quite attracted by the pay as you go model for data.
As I can't swallow the price tag of flagship phones, I was glad to see Fi had a cheapie motorola g6 for $100 w/ decent specs for the price. Switching over was pretty seamless and the customer support was quite helpful and quick to get ahold of, so that was also nice.
Thanks to averaging 1gb data per month, I save $20 or more per month compared to what I had been paying which is a win for me.

My only gripe:
-Spotty connection quality with voice calls in my house. However, occasionally I get push surveys after phone calls asking how the call quality was. It's been gradually defaulting to WiFi calling which has helped tremendously. It'd be nice if there was a setting to make that default when I'm connected to WiFi though.
