NetSpend's reputation is largely tarnished by pervasive customer dissatisfaction, particularly related to its customer service and account management. Many users report significant challenges in activating cards, accessing funds, and receiving timely support, often facing long wait times and unhelpful representatives. Concerns about account security and unauthorized closures further exacerbate frustrations. While a few customers have expressed loyalty and satisfaction in the past, the overwhelming sentiment reflects a lack of reliability and transparency. Overall, potential customers are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative options for prepaid services.

Its absolutely ridiculous, my son bought this prepaid card to buy some things off his game. Well he attempts to activate the card and can't because they want his social security number, his Birthday, and other things I don't think they should be asking for since its PREPAID! Its his money so why are they taking him through so much to spend his money that he is paying you'll to spend. So I call customer service and inform them that he is a minor and just wanted the card to buy some things off his game. I am told that since he is a minor they have to restrict his card, ARE U F****** kidding me. So now I am so frustrated. This company is a JOKE! REFUND PLEASE! The only reason I gave that 1 star is because I had to.
I am a single mom of 4. My husband passed a few years ago and it left us homeless. I've had to stay with numerous people long the way and it resulted in lost cards and 1 stolen card. I had to replace a couple lost cards and both times I was at a different address. I also used a couple phones along the way because I couldn't afford my own. Finally, bringing us up to date, I ordered a replacement card November of 2020 and paid overnight shipping because I couldn't wait long to be able to access my money. I never received it. I have been in phone battles since then trying to get a new card. I cannot remember addresses or phone numbers when asked to verify my identity, especially now. I don't remember where I was at what time, or whose phone I was using. What I do have is info from the IRS stating my 2nd and 3rd stimulus checks were deposited to this account. As well as my monthly survivor benefit from Social Security since my husband passed. It shouldn't be this difficult to get my own money. I have explained all of this at least 50 times over the past year desperately trying to gets a new replacement card. Finally, Thursday, October 7th, 2021 after 1 1\2 hours and 5 representatives I was asked if I'd like to close the account and have my balance mailed to me in a check. YES YES YES! I got a reference number and was told it takes 1 business day to get approved. I called back today, Monday, October 11th, 2021 and proceeded to give the reference number. I was asked the same verification questions, PLUS when was my last deposit and for how much. I explained ONCE AGAIN the situation and asked for a supervisor. I was hung up on... TWICE. I'm at my wits end. What do I do when I can't get to a supervisor and am being hung up on now?
You people are Crooks you are fake and take people money without giving it back to them then you show you a little commercial at night time is fake as hell and y'all were laying to tell in your crook

You provide ID when you open your account in person. Then, every time you log in online, they ask you to fill a question-by-question quiz to "verify your identity". Slip and double click "continue" or forget your parents' phone number from when you were a month old, and they'll lock your account. Their "fraud department" (which perpetrates fraud) claims you never provided the ID that you can't open an account at all without. They demand you email it, refuse to let you speak to a supervisor, and give you the run around. You'll probably never get your money back at this point. They're thieves, plain and simple.
We don't provide the option to activate our cards in person as we don't have any physical locations.
We're sorry to hear about the difficulty you are experiencing with the activation process. For assistance, please email social@netspend.com.

Unfortunately didn't learn my lesson first time... Bought a paypal prepaid card from 7/11 (not at all from paypal like I thought) turns out it's by netspend that should have been the first redflag for me the false advertising. Anyway link it to my paypal to be able to withdraw my funds and everytime I tried to transfer from paypal it would decline the transfer claiming it was an error on paypals end. After 4 hours on phone with paypal they directed me to linking my bancorp (netspend) account and successfully transferred 50 dollars after that same issue never was able to transfer from paypal to the paypal prepaid account again nobody can help gave the run around paypal blamed netspend netspend blamed paypal blah blah. So that was a total waste. Now two days ago I needed a card to use a app called veoride for scooter rentals I called my dad asked him to find me a prepaid card load funds and send the numbers turns out he bought a netspend visa prepaid card I should have known the troubles that played ahead. After 2 hours wasn't able to use the card to pay for a ride as it was declined mind you it has 100 dollars on it and it's activated and all so that's not the problem had to walk the 10 miles home. Tried using the card for uber next day. Declined. Tried to add to google pay. DECLINED. Tried the physical card to buy mcds... DECLINED so can someone explain to me exactly wtf is the purpose? And I'm also being already charged account maintenance fees? Like this is a literal joke of a company.

I cant believe what had haope to me by not spend. They sent 4 primary cards to other addresses and states. I've called a dozen times and told them to terminate my information. Since then they have gave my personal information to other businesses. I can only imagine my social security number 2as apart of that information. This business should be shut down as soon as possible! Do your research before doing anything. Definitely stay far away from here!

My son received a Netspend prepaid card as a gift. We had an issue activating it so I called customer support. They said their was an issue verifying my identity. After going around in circles for too long trying to verify who I was they finally offered to send a check for the amount of the card. Well, I received the check but it's $5.95 short of the amount. Apparently they charged me a fee for their problem.
We're sorry to hear about your experience.

I received a Netspend debit card from the Red Cross as a conciliation for them not having gas cards. I had evacuated Louisiana prior to Hurricane Ida and was now making my way back home. I made an account on Netspend's website the night before I planned to leave and drive home; entered my SSN, address, and other identifying info/checks that credit bureaus make you enter. The next day I went to fill my gas tank, entered the pin I had created... and the card was declined. I went inside to try again; card was declined. Ended up using my credit card that's already inundated with hotel charges from my evacuation.
I went online to try to log in and see what happened: Account Locked. Today, I finally called to ask how to unlock my account. Was told that I needed to submit pictures via email of: my government issued ID, SS Card(?), and a utility bill with my current address. In the words of the customer service rep, "because the US Patriot Act" allows them to request these things.
What was the point in me creating an account with my address, SSN, I think it even asked for my license number? Create a pin? And at the first use, decline the card when I absolutely needed it. Now I'm made to jump through hoops when I'm already overwhelmed with other Hurricane Ida-related problems. I really don't want and trust to send these people my ID documents.
If you ever have the choice, DO NOT PUT MONEY ON AND/OR GIVE SOMEONE A NETSPEND CARD. The fees alone are highway robbery.
We are sorry to hear about the situation.

If your identity is partially verified, full use of the Card Account will be restricted. We assure you that we work hard to ensure all information is safe and secure.

BEWARE - I purchase this netSpend card from a local Duane Reade Store here in New York and put only $20 bucks on it. I didn't ACTIVATE the card right away. When I called to activate it, they it was too late that it just expired. They said each month over the expiration date I was changed a $5.95 PER MONTH "maintenance fees"and was subtracted from my balance? And my balance was now ZERO. Even thought it was only $20, it's the principle. After 3 calls, 2 hang ups... I finally got a supervisor on the phone that said she'll send me a check. I'm now waiting on that check. This guys should be ashamed of themselves and should be shut down. I'm also reporting to the BBB if I don't see my refund.
We're sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your purchase.
The fees for using the card and for maintaining the card account, including maintenance fees, are fully disclosed in the Terms & Conditions that are included in the card packaging. The fee is automatically charged after 90 consecutive days of no activity.

I tried to activate a prepaid card... thats a card that I already PAID FOR! They told me I had to send them many different forms of personal information... including a copy of my driver's license. All for a 25 dollar prepaid card that I wanted to give as a Christmas gift. How they get away with scam is beyond me. Do not let these criminals scam you!

I had 10,000$ deposited, made a purchase at Walmart for 36$ and they locked my account for suspicious activity, then after already verifying my identity when I opened the account, I had to send mail, I'd and social security card. I only had a pic of my social and 1 corner was snapped out, they said that wasn't good enuf. Ss office isn't allowing walk-ins since covid. They faxed me proof of my social, I sent it in and that wasn't good enuf, right after I finally found my card and sent it in and then they emailed me that my account was closed and they would mail me a check. This is ridiculous I need my money now. They've had it 3 weeks and now this. Smh

Be very careful not to buy these cards. They are a huge scam. They are not gift cards but look like they are. They require more information than you should give and when you try to get your money back, they charge $5.95 per month and then $5.95 to get what money is left on the card back, plus talk with an foreign county that doesn't understand what you say.

I found a prepaid debit card in my 15 year old's room. First the store never should have sold to him because he was underage but that is a different battle.
Tried to get balance online and of course couldn't. Called the *******363 on the back and got 2 different people who could not and would not give me the balance because I couldn't provide them with a social security number and told me my 15 year old son would have to call them back. He doesn't know his SS# and I told them that. All I wanted to know is what the balance is on the card. I asked to be escalated and talked with someone different who asked me about 10 different questions and still said she couldn't give me the info. Such BS.

My only way to pay my rent is by my social security disability payments. They locked my account for fraud protection and I did everything they asked with sending my ID and SS card and proof of address and then they say it wasn't enough. It's been two months now and I asked to have my account closed and a check sent to address on file and yet to receive it and every time I call they say it takes 15 days and the day it was processed is a day later every time... They say the same exact thing as if they read it from a script. I couldn't pay my rent and ended up on the streets...
We are very sorry to hear that. We'd like to look into this for you. Please email us at social@netspend.com.

My other temp card mysteriously stopped working they have all my money. I have to call every day to unlock my card because it"declined" spend 3 hours dealing with these idiots. If they are having issues mailing me my card. They said we can close your account and mail u a check like are u serious lol. These people the worst! Dont buy net spend! I would put 0 stars if I could
