Everyone was very helpful and accommodating. I really never felt pressured. When the auction did not meet our reserve price but near what we were hoping for it was suggested a counter offer that was over $1,000 above the final bid. The counter offer was accepted.
If you are selling a high end diamond, local Jewlers most likely will not be interested. We started by getting a local GIA certified appraiser's replacemet value before getting the actual GIA Certification. That was a wasted expense. The fair market value was $70,775 and the insurance value was $95,500! WOW the excitement! A local Jewlery store helped us ship the stone to GIA for the certification. But after the GIA Certification came back with a lower grading, the GIA same local appraiser lowered fair market value of $45,500 with the GIA Certification.
With the GIA Certificate, I contacted multiple online diamond buyers. I got cash offers ranging from $10,000 to $16,000! A huge emotional rollercoaster for a stone that cost $30,000 in 2001! Worthy was able to get me an offer that netted me $16,016.
Before sending the diamond to Worthy, I contacted several on line reputable (high TrustPilot ratings and BBB accredited) diamond buyers. So I knew what I could get from a direct after commission cash sale. When the Worthy auction price did not meet that, I contacted the highest cash offer and it was confirmed his offer was still good. I had Worthy set the counter offer so that after commissions, I would receive that. The counter was immediately accepted.
I had also contacted the two largest name known auctions houses in the world, Although my diamond sold in the teens, one would not accept it the other had high commissions on both buyers and sellers meaning a much higher out of pocket price for the buyer, less for me and a HUGH COMMISSION to the auction house. Interestingly both houses had very low TrustPilot ratings and neither have BBB accreditation! Beware of the big name auction houses.
Also, I only wanted to deal with BBB accredited firms with high TrustPilot reviews. Both large international auction houses fail there, but I did want their view of the diamond. OK.
Payment by Worthy does takes a while, but it was in the EXACT timeframe they said. They initiated the payment with a bank transfer on the 10 th business day after the sale, and it took another 3 business days to clear.
All in all I am very satisfied with Worthy, but beware, you will probably not be able to sell your stone for what you think it is worth. And I found even a GIA Certification the local GIA Certified appraiser was almost triple what you will get from auction or a cash offer. So just avoid the expense of an appraisal and go directly to GIA
