If it's not broke, don't fix it. What was the best data app, is now the worst. The app's best distinguishing data information feature, forecast DAILY PRECIPITATION TOTALS, which no other app had, was entirely removed from the updated app. The app's best distinguishing feature, two SINGLE-view, multi-data summary graph-charts, one daily, the other hourly with additional and more detailed info, was replaced with information scattered over multiple screens and graphs. Numbers were removed and replaced with content-free cutesy graphics.
The prior version had an opening screen with a SIX-day graph-chart of temp and precip-chance, with precip-total, precip chance, temp high/low, wind high, wind direction, & cloud cover/ type above each day. The graph-chart continued four more days with a left-right swipe, and an hourly graph-chart, with detailed info such as wind speed and direction, appeared by touching the day. It used to take about 2-5 seconds to get ten days of almost every bit of useful weather forecast info. It is hard to imagine improving it, since the only improvement would be to add info to the graph-chart, without reducing readability. I could not think of any other weather information that was not already in the graph-chart. The only suggested improvement would be to rotate the screen, so that all ten days of data could be seen, not just six days.
The new update REDUCED the opening graph from SIX days, to THREE days, removed valuable info above each day, and called itself "SMARTER", which is an insult to prior users. The purpose of graphs and charts is to summarize info. Reducing information, without improving some other feature, such as readability, is not making something smarter. Since the prior version was already easily readable by anyone who could read the most simple graph or chart, the only possible improvement would be to somehow add more info, not reduce the info. Scattering the info in a single graph or chart, over multiple screens and multiple graphs and charts is NOT being "SMARTER", as the marketing says. It makes the app UNUSABLE, not "smarter".
The new opening screen, which is a cutesy-graphic of a numberless "speedometer", is a waste of screen space, since it presents no added information, and take up the entire screen. The new "graph" of sunrise/sunset time has no defined y-axis, so is not a "graph". If the y-axis is interpreted as being the angle of the sun over the horizon, the graph contains no information, since the day to day change is imperceptible to the human eye, in a ten-day graph. It's a complete waste of space.
The forecast total daily precipitation has been completely removed from the app. It now presents a 100% chance of rain with a forecast of. 01 inches (e.g., at Palm Springs), as the SAME as a 100% chance of 10 inches of rain (e.g., on top of the mountain above Palm Springs), despite the forecasts being different by a factor of 10,000 in total precipitation.
The customer service responses to my emails were nonresponsive and FALSE, saying "everything" was still in the app. The customer service rep sent me hunting all over the app for data that was no longer in the app. When I pointed this out, they refused to respond.
If you are a user looking for an app with multi-faceted weather data, presented in quickly absorbable single-view graphs and charts, the prior version IS for you, but this updated app is NOT for you. Don't bother to install it. Ignore all the positive reviews, which are for the prior version, which has been completely destroyed. Don't bother to contact their customer service, who will make false statements from boilerplate responses, and have no interest in doing anything other than justifying the destruction of the former best weather data app.
Hey everyone who loved and used wunderground. I have some good news!
Clearly we are not being told by the wunderground folks the actual truth, however, I did note something that may help all those who enjoyed those wunderground 1-10 day GRAPHS.
As we all know Wunderground went TKO about 7 months ago and became totally choppy useless. Not only was the weather unreliable and spotty it is often inaccurate or dead wrong as well as slow as molasses.
As a former wunderground user and as a professional Pilot, I use several weather sources to confirm weather data for the safety of myself and my passengers. Thus, I spend a lot of time scouring the weather and weather disseminating choices. One of the sites I use is Intellicast. www.intellicast.com. Please go here and try it.
Remember those cool graphs on wunderground? Well NEWS FLASH, Intellicast has the EXACT same graphs on their website.
When you go to the home page, type in the location you want to check including an airport. It will come up EXACTLY the SAME way as wunderground once did.
Oddly enough in a little drop down menu, it actually says: Personal Weather Stations brought to you by (none other than) wunderground. I cannot say why after all this time and attempt to communicate with wunderground why wunderground did not simply tell us this or that maybe they sold the platform to Intellicast or what the relationship is but wunderground stuff is CLEARLY over at Intellicast. Rather than being recluse, snide rude and snarky, wunderground could have simply directed the masses to Intellicast.com
So, go to Intellicast.com to get those great weather graphs once employed by wunderground. They are not saying why, just accept the fact they graphs are there and they are great. I hope you'll thank me later.
As an updated caveat, I was in Europe recently. I tried to log onto Intellicast and each time I was forwarded to wunderground, which totally sucked. It did that when I returned to the US. When I cleared out my cache file and cookies this problem went away. Clearly there is some yet to be determined relationship between these two companies and they are not telling us low life plebes what the heck they are doing. So if this happens to you, try and clear out you're cache file and cookies and maybe this will go away because currently, wunderground sucks!
Adios!
Third-parties that need to work with and cooperate with Weather Underground have verified to me that WU has poor management. They are out of touch with reality and completely disconnected from their users.
There is one major reason that explains the new layout, which was admitted by a WU staff member: increase the exposure for advertisements
1) Why does it keep reverting back to a weather station that I DO NOT WANT TO USE? If I select Weather Station ABC, STOP GIVING ME WEATHER STATION XYZ. If I want to know the amount of rain for the next 6 hours, STOP SWITCHING OVER TO A DIFFERENT STATION BASED ON MY ISP's LOCATION.
2) Switching to Amazon's servers has created issues with owners of Ambient Weather, Acurite, and other major hardware vendors. This creates random "gaps" in the collected data, which ironically removes high-quality stations from the map. TO THIS DAY Weather Underground has not tried to fix this network issue on their end.
3) Too many clicks, too many tabs, just to get BASIC information: 10-day forecast, hourly forecast, et al. Why is the hourly forecast only available as an eye-straining table format? Why do I have to keep clicking around to load yet another slow page just to view data and forecasts that used to be accessible in a single glance?
4) Mystery information! Where is it grabbing the current UV index from? The station I selected? NOPE! Because when the station is reporting a UVI of 2 on its dashboard, the "Health" section shows me a UVI of 11! Completely absurd and confusing.
5) Slow as molasses. From any computer, any device, any location, any ISP, the web site is much slower now! Sometimes data doesn't even show up unless I refresh the page several times! The gutted Wundermap, which SHOULD be faster and leaner, is now slow as a snail.
6) My settings are not saved, no matter how many times I try, no matter if I'm logged into my account. They always revert back to the default settings. The same is true of the Wundermap.
7) "Gold star" status is meaningless. A poorly setup PWS that reports data for 30 minutes will get a gold star, while a quality PWS that has been consistent and reporting for the past month will not?
8) Marking a location as a "favorite" or "home" is meaningless, as the site will revert you back to an UNWANTED location / PWS based on your ISP or geolocation, or some other "zmw" nonesense. WHEN I PICK A STATION, KEEP ME ON THAT STATION FOR EVERYTHING: rain, forecasts, health, et al.
9) They ruined the Android and iOS apps. Just read the latest reviews on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
10) Jeff Masters? Are you reading this? How about you stop pretending like you don't know that your project, which you co-founded, is going down the toilet? Stop posting on your blog like everything is just great and dandy. How about you bring attention to this and muster the support of the readers of your blog?
New site is total garbage. What's a good replacement? Asdfnasdnmmdmnfamsdnfdfnasdfmnfamsndfmasdnfsdffamsdfnas, dmfnasd, mfnas, dmfnas, dmfnas, mdfnas, mdfnas, mdfnas, mdfnas, mdfnas, mdfn
These owners of this website don't care about the user and how great the website is. All of the info they had on one great page is now divided for make the users angry. But they don't care about ANYTHING EXCEPT CLICKS AND MONEY. GREED!
This website is now REALLY BAD. A crap entity like TWC who also has had a crap website for DECADES with ads, unwanted videos and BS articles, bought a nicely designed informational website and ABSOLUTELY RUINED it obviously to diverge more people to their own crap website. Wunderground was a great website owned by obviously greedy people who could care less about their users. This GREED effects startup companies all over the place and the customers lose.
