How do you downgrade or close your account? The former doesn't work and for the latter only "no" is responsive in answer to the confirmation question about whether I'm sure I won't to close it! Very unimpressed. Also concerned I'll be charged another for another month's subscription which I don't want.

You will be charged for the full premium thing after closure, ask staff for a refund if you bought your membership on the first month, they will give a full refund.
