I have had that experience, as well. However, I did recently notice that the sizing charts, which I had assumed were the same for all items, are actually different for each garment. Utilize the sizing chart, and when half inches are an issue, err on the side of going larger. My size 10 (American) frame sometimes needs a XXXL, but the fit and style are still cool. I just cut out the tag. :)
