Gumtree UK has a rating of 1.1 stars from 82 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Like all classified ad sites, and especially the free ones, Gumtree does indeed suffer from scam ads. That said, they seem pretty good at taking down scam ads when reported and there are active forum moderators who aid in that cause. The site itself carries a growing selection of ads and it's free. I think the site is a good choice for items that you can buy locally and transact face to face (which was, I beleive, the original concept behind the site). But don't use it to buy things remotely from people you haven't met.
A woman bought a puppy from me I am the breeder a couple days later she put it up for re sale breaking lucys law that prohibits the resale of any animal under 6 months the puppy has to come back to the breeder she has not come back to me and is therfore breaking the law

Tip for consumers:
Gumtree have said that they will not take down the add as it does not break any of THEIR policies but it's OK to break the law?

I am sole trader and was coned by very nice salesman Ayaz with big promises and a contract. Ayaz promised things that did not materialise. I was going to have account manager to help with guidance and advice. First month the account manager Ben was nowhere to be found. The second month we had death in our family so we did not work and didn't use the advertising we were paying for. The contract carried on and despite the contract promised our paid adverts to be carried over to the next month they were not. Finally the third month too! Numerous calls back to busy Ben he promised to allow us to use 1 of our month adverts we pre paid and was supposed to send a contract to sign so he can release our adverts! 2 months later and many promises and phone calls Ben stopped returning my calls and Ayaz too. In fact we paid £115 per month plus VAT for a contract we didn't use and Gumtrees robbed our business with false contracts and promises. Don't be fulled to sign anything with them!

3 months package for advertising
Put my article on Gumtree, email address as contact, over a week received 4 "is it still available", replied with phone number, and location details, arranged visit, none turned up. Suspect same person using different name as all replies so similar. Cancelled Ad, trip to charity shop and no hassle.
Paid for feature advert only to find out next day they had took all my money £20.000 from account. Police have informed me gumtree work in Nigeria in a makeshift office with eBay there. How can this be
Gumtree seem to wait until your ad is almost finished then send you an email expressing interest, therefore encouraging you to re-post whatever you're selling from made up respondents.
No reply when you get back to the interested party is my experience. This has happened 3 times now, hence the suspicion.
In other words,. Generating a few more pounds of themselves
Rude staff.
Hadn't used the site in years, posted an ad selling tickets & paid for 2 weeks front row space. Within a few hours the advert was removed, when contacting their online support, they failed to explain why but instead, supplied a 'Policy Rules' link, when I questioned this & asked for a refund, Gumtree rep then terminated the chat without any explanation.
Pathetic customer care who will happily take your money.
AVOID
I paid over £100 to advertise. It was deleted after 2 days with no explanation. Have sent numerous emails, each more annoyed, and each time get a 'case number', but nobody ever actually comes back on the issue. In addition, the site is badly set up, not user friendly if trying to contact applicants, but above all there seems no effective means of redress if you don't get what you paid for. Is Gumtree itself a sort of scam?
I had to change my email address due to emails received everyday. If you try to look to buying a car you'll find tons of private sellers with 50 60 cars for sales, all pictured in different backgrounds images,? I have called a few as the prices was well under the market and yeah as i said scammers, scammers, scammers. "leave a deposit and we can meet to do the transaction, as i have already peoples interested in this particular car "
I have just found 1stbuy.co.uk which seems to be a really good selling and buying website, looks amazing, good customer support, very few boring google ads, Good site worth a try.
Time wasters and scammers
I've tried to sell two items 3 times to no avail
I've even dropped the price crazy low and all I get are people wasting time. Not one viewing lol its ridiculous
I consider giving them away for free, haha, which defeats the object
Appalling customer service; as a seller you try to put up a legitimate ad and the site immediately removes it.
You then have to email their customer service team who apparently sit around and do nothing all day. They ask you security questions which you answer - correctly - and they simply respond with saying that the answers are incorrect and that they will not approve my ad "for your own security"?!
Ridiculous website which I have tried to use more than once now. Stick to EBay and Vinted, they are trustworthy sites.
Tip for consumers:
As a seller, just don’t even bother. Many more trustworthy sites out there.
Honestly really bad! Customer service is useless! They have mad changes and it has got even worse. I used to use Gumtree to advertise jobs for my business, but that will all stop as things have got worse.
They have hidden charge apply which they dont show before paying, be careful i have paid £15 to promote for 7days but they charged £45 instead and refused to refund
Use Auto trader instead genuine site no scam
£102 to advertise for a job, they sell you all the upgrades to get more applications. Three weeks later and not one applicant, they don't care that you have very few views (31 after three weeks) and no applicants what so ever. "Its not there problem was their reply!"
Indeed was a free advert for the same period and it got 240 views and 30 applicants...
I recently purchased something from a seller advertising in gumtree. I paid for it immediately and the seller said she will post it as next day delivery and it's been a week now and I haven't received my item. In short I've been ripped off. Too many bogus sellers and scammers advertising in this site. I suggest to avoid this site. Better choose amazon or ebay than this.
Stay away from this site, its full of scammers and thieves. Had a Laptop and VR Headset pinched from me, buyer did not put money in bank my fault shouldn't have sent it before being paid. Be warned trust no one.
Business students the world over: if you want to look at something with great potential and see how to $#*! it up, squeezing as much money out of it as possible before people get fed up, Gumtree is the perfect example.
It used to be good. It even used to feel like it was worthwhile using, like you were buying into something decent.
No longer. It's just a shadow of its former self, rather like a nice corner shop with friendly staff and quality produce being turned into an industrial scale mega-mart.
They couldn't give a $#*! what buyers and sellers experience, as long as their profits are ramped up to the max.
The jokers who bought this site should have pikes shoved up their asses and then thrown into a pit of vermin, where they belong.
I was selling camping equipment via gumtree. When I received a text asking if it was still for sale?
The scam - the customer lived in Nigeria and wanted me to transfer £250 to before they would pay for goods. They also infected pc with malware virus, trying to get card/bank details. Im not stupid.
Similar to many others:
I tried to sell an item on Gumtree as a new user.
Ad immediately removed and after an e-mail, requesting support, went unanswered, I used the "live chat" feature.
Liam told me that my account had been blocked and that he wasn't sure why but any further correspondence from me would be unanswered. I immediately asked what I had done to warrant this and the window was closed.
I received an e-mail from them telling me, in a rather blunt manner, that their decision is final and that it is best I don't use their site anymore.
And people use Gumtree? How on Earth has it become a popular medium with customer service like this? I'm stunned.
Needless to say, I'll not be touching it again and will aim to deter as many people as I can from using it.
Companies like this exist BECAUSE OF their users and this kind of treatment of innocent users should justify the dismantling of the site.
There are many other options out there for selling personal items.
Complete waste of time. Had endless time wasters followed by someone who decided its a great place to talk about his boring life. I wouldn't waste your time on the complete junk site go anywhere else. AVOID!
I had an horrible experience with Gumtree removing my ads without a clear explanation and keeping my money. I spent over 100 in ads that were mysteriously removed and the customer service wasn t able to give an explanation for this. Moreover they never refunded.
Tip for consumers:
If you had the same problem and spent hundreds in unpublished ads on Gumtree contact Me as we want to start a class action against Gumtree for its illegal behaviour.
I was punished by Gumtree, EBay and Paypal for telling Gumtree via Facebook 3 of their sellers were not ltd companies (limited companies no longer active but obviously still trading)! So I do question their honesty.
I have tried and tried again to underline the problems to them, but they told me to send them an email and I did, nothing absolutely nothing; those people still trading.
Shame on you Gumtree, time for a better person/group to purchase Gumtree, preferably not via ebay!
What a horrible experience!
I have used Gumtree years ago and was very happy from the service!
My mother posted a free ad yesterday and a day after her account was blocked and the add removed. When she contacted Gumtree she was informed that their decision was final! There were no reasons of why the add was removed nor why the account has been blocked.
The live chat advisor was not helpful at all. She advised that the account has been blocked but said that she does not have information of the reasons behind this decision.
We will never use this website again. This business should not operate within the United Kingdom!
I feel like i have to share with everyone my experience with this scam website.
I paid for an advert that was showing 6.99 and they charge me from my paypal account 12 £. Once i finish payment and i try to check my advert, was automatic removed.
I contact them through their email address and they respond to me when i mentioned that i opened a dispute through paypal, saying to me that i have broke the rules.
How come i broke the rules since my advert goes automatic in removed section?
I must say to you people, keep your money away from this scammers. Is the worst website i have ever use.
Just finished selling my old camera kit on gumtree and great price really quickly. And no commission or costs. Very happy. Great website. Clear and professional.
