I have been trying for MONTHS to cancel my subscription. They just keep charging my credit card! You cannot even go in and remove your card from your account. I'm getting ready to call the Attorney General's office and file a consumer complaint. Hushmail is the WORST!
In the current climate of corporate and government spying with no regard for personal privacy everyone needs to have an email account that provides encryption. Very simple intuitive interface, encryption selection can be turned on and off when needed. Hushmail isn't tracking and logging your every move on the internet and forcibly intruding into your personal life like Gmail.
I have been a Hushmail user since around 2008 after a strong recommendation from a trusted friend who is an ex-pat living..."off shore". As long as you are not doing anything illegal, this encrypted email service is great! Hushmail's servers are in Canada. They have a free starter email service as well as a premium that cost less than $40 per year. The premium offers more space. It is simple to use and installed on my home computer as well as my iPhone. The staff at Hushmail are great.
I have been a hush mail user since its conception but the last three years I have found that even with a little as 4 emails in my email they keep telling me
Im at 130% capacity so they lock my emails so I cannot send nor receive emails.
With just 4 emails? They are just trying to drive out all the free users to make room for upgraded paying members so I've been told.
Frequent service outages and glitchy service... especially at night. Terrible customer service. Not private (customer service can read all your emails). Not secure (Hushmail has turned over private emails to the U.S. government). Hushmail privacy policy states that it logs IP addresses in order "to analyze market trends, gather broad demographic information, and prevent abuse of our services.
If you ever have a need for secure email, which can only ever be read by the intended recipient, this is for you. It encrypts your mail using PGP, which converts your text to a mass of unintelligible characters for anyone who doesn't have the correct key and can't answer a question you choose.
As the mail is web-based, too, you never download it in an unencrypted form except through your web browser, using a secure server. Unless you're a government department, that should be secure enough. Come to think of it, if you're a government department you're probably not bothering to encrypt your mail in the first place, but that's another story.
Unencrypted email is notoriously insecure, and though the chances that the FBI are reading yours may be slim, you might still want to pass personal information that really is personal. A credit card or social security number, perhaps, or some juicy office gossip. Hushmail does this quickly and simply, and if you're just sending text, the free 2mb account should be sufficient. For under $1 a week you can get 10Gb of space, and there are business options too.
Hushmail has been around for many years and has no complaints as far as I know; it just does what it does, well.
