on 4/8/16My issue was the automatic renewal without any kind of courtesy reminder prior to the effective date, as other businesses do. Advising one year in advance is a poor business practice. When I contacted them immediately on the renewal effective date, they refused to cancel and offered me a 25% discount. They eventually gave me the full refund but it was due to me turning it over to AMEX to resolve. I do however agree with the advice to base your renewal on your own personal experience.
Hi
I found it bad that they did not send an email to remind me that my subscription was due to be renewed and just took the money without warning. I found this sad as I have always found the site easy to use and love the software that comes with it. In response to the reply stating that it's hard to download documents and linked files - I have always found it easier to do all the work on the pc adding the files etc locally and then syncing the work to the website.
On several sites there is the option in the setting to tick or until tick an auto renew box. It is about time MyHeritage did the same.
I have more cons than pro's. Theyr support does not function. I opened a support case and it took forewer before they responded. They actualy did'nt until I wrote a review on sitejabber. The help I got was insuficcient and they still have not solved the initial problem witch is my second con. They offer backup of all your data but still after six months they havent fixed a problem with theyr software so that bacups are incomplete. I have given up on them fixing it. I wont use any more time writing mails that are answered by people that dont read my previous mails and giving advises that truly are unqualified. Last: When searching for ancesters I get more hits on google, pointing to ancestry, than using the My heritage searching functions.
Their research data was fairly strong, but I did not like the tree builder. If you are comfortable with what you are spending, why cancel. I just didn't like their business practices as the pricing/plans are not publicly stated and they used a bait and switch technique in conjuction with their trial offer. If was deceptive and no matter how good their product is, I will not support a business who operates in a non-ethical, transparent manner.
Goodness. What a silly question. You've had good experiences, than stick with the site. As for those with negative reviews well first off anyone who is any sort of a researcher doesn't need a year on this site. Some of the information is accurate, most is not. I have found relatives with absolutely no relation to people "married" or the "parents" of children that apparently sprang out of cabbage patches as they never had nor birthed them... So a number of these negative reviews don't come from people who don't read, but rather people expecting more PROFESSIONAL behaviour with the allowance of monthly subscriptions. Almost EVERY other site like myhertiage allows you to be billed monthly so if you find you don't require it by 6 months, that's not another six months down the drain... There's an old saying - certain people with more money than brains. If you want to throw away your cash on a site that takes money WITHOUT giving you a notification on refund and which does NOT allow you to easily cancel / get refund. Go ahead. Fools are what make the world go round after all.
I have only had one problem with the program - I started as a free trial and then did not do anything with it for a few years. Then, when I decided to start up again (after I retired) I had a problem syncing my old with my new. I used the "Contact" at the bottom of the home page on my website and was pleased that I could get my issue resolved via email.
For those who complain that their subscription was automatically renewed, I can only say that one can check their purchases and keep track of when the subscription renewal date is and stop the subscription prior to that. I imagine that any information one enters must be somehow copied over to another place prior to stopping, however.
All of that being said, I love the program and plan to continue to use it until I come to a dead end and cannot for some reason go any further. Then I plan to print a family tree and/or book that is also available through the website.
BEWARE! The site 'Restore' function DOES NOT WORK. You can only make a backup, which, of course, without restoring, is useless. The tech department has known about this for months and they DO NOT intend to fix it. Why not? Because if they don't then the only way you can access all the work you've done is to buy a subscription. Think about this: I put in six weeks of work, and now I have to pay to access it. Please don't be an idiot sucker like I was!
Hi Cynthia, I am fairly new to this but a friend of mine gave me a start to mine from another site which I found to be rubbish and that was Ancestry.com and their so called free look and see what you can find advert which for me did not even turn up myself. So since then and coming to My Heritage I have found connection all over the world from Canada, Australia, America, South Africa and more people to add to mine going back some 7 generations on my grandmothers side and i keep getting more people verifying some of those that I have from other families who are connected to mine along the years. Now about to look more closely at my late wife`s family and see where this takes me all in I am very pleased with the results as for the family tree builder I have found it to be very easy to use so all in I would say go for it you never you too maybe surprised... Alex
Hi Cynthia: Problems I have had were resolved in a timely fashion. The records that they send are only as accurate as the author. In any program, you have to try determining the accuracy to be added to your file. If you decide to switch, you can copy your files to a Gen program that is free, and then move the files to whatever program you desire from Gen (or Geni). I am in my third year with MyHeritage and have over 13,000 in my program.
Hi Cynthia, I think some of the bad reviews are from people that don't take the time to read everything before they sign up. Yes renewal is automatic so you need to be aware of the date you signed up. I've had one problem and they got back to me the next day. They are expanding they're record base continually and in the two or three years that I've belonged, I've added over 12,000 people to my tree. I find it easy to use.
If you are happy with it, stick with it.
For me, they did not answer my emails for almost a month asking why my fathers birth and death certificates werent listed (simple things open to public viewing) and esily found at ancestry.com. Finally I got an answer form someone who deosnt speak English well, that perhaps it is illegal for them to have that information. WHAT BUNK!
Hi Cynthia, I understand your predicament. I was in a similar position a few months ago... debating whether I should renew or cancel. I knew my renewal date was coming up in March 2016 and I had to do something. I did not like that Heritage.com would have taken the renewal amount from my account especially since I was not benefitting from some of the features. If you have a very large Family Tree, then most of the features might be beneficial. My Family Tree has less than 1000, plus I did not want Smart Matches for my husband's side family. He has relatives who is doing theirs so why should I have to pay for a feature I was not interested in. I had sent an email to Heritage Support. I had received a prompt email respond followed by a phone call. I was able to work out a deal for a cheaper price for what I wanted from Heritage.com. Perhaps you could try doing the same. I found My Heritage Support Team to be very helpful. They did not push me into getting/buying anything that I was not happy with. They were very kind and helpful. Because of their understanding, I am happy to say, I still have my Family Tree. You need to send them an email and explain to them how you feel about their service. According to their response... you make your decision. Good luck.
I hope I'm answering the right question in the right place. This Sitejabber site is inscrutable!
I also use the site differently from many others. I keep my MasterFile on my own computer using Brothers Keeper software. Of the standard Internet Sites that I use, I think MyHeritage is the easiest to use, and has very useful features that others don't have, especially Smartmatching and Consensus Reporting. I do not use FTB because the site software cannot handle my very large database (554,000+ people). As a result, I can't use their synchronization feature.
Their technical assistance is excellent now, though I had trouble with it as recently as two years ago.
To directly answer Cynthia's question, I recommend MyHeritage as a valuable and well-used tool among several that I use, all for different features. If I had to choose only one Internet site, I'm honestly not sure which one I'd keep. They all have serious faults, but overall, I think I'd judge MyHeritage as the most useful.
I have been using myheritage for about a year and have had very positive experiences with the site. I find it relatively easy to use and have had good response from their team whenever I had a question. I have viewing-only access to Ancestry.com through a relative and have never been impressed with their site. But since I am unable to add or correct anything on the Ancestry site, I have limited experience other than viewing my relative's input. On the myheritage site I have been able to reach family in several countries back to the 1400's.
Hi Cynthia,
I have used my Heritage for a number of years and am completely satisfied with the service provided. I have found it easy to use with good support. The object of the exercise, for me, was to find relatives and what I have found has left me speechless... they opened a world for me I did not know existed. My true family has grown in leaps and bounds with all the proof provided so I know it is true.
I would recommend that you renew.

Hi Cynthia, The replies I have seen seem to have your quandry covered. I have had only one reportable problem, which was occasioned by my own stupidity, and this was handeled promptly and efficiently. So I have only praise for MyHeritage. I must add that I was using another well known search engine which I had to abandon when I could not get an answer from them on an important matter - but that was just my experience. So it comes down to a subjective choice. Happy hunting.
