I'm deeply disappointed with American Express. Their rewards program has been nothing but a letdown. They over-promise and under-deliver, advertising amazing benefits but failing to follow through. After being charged a hefty annual fee, I expected to enjoy the rewards they promote, but I've seen little to no value for the money spent. Customer service was unhelpful when I reached out to resolve these issues, leaving me feeling unheard and frustrated. I regret choosing this card, and I'd strongly advise others to look elsewhere if they want a company that stands behind its promises.

They only allow select charges when you try to meet their promotion requirements so that you never meet the limit but not before they charge that annual charge. Then when you catch on that they are cheating you by saying you were 'short' the required spending, they will not refund the fee, even if a prorated fee return has been requested.
Thieving Crooks!
I have perfect credit and I'm leaving American Express because I'm sick calling and getting place do hold while they tell me a supervisor will 'call me' later.
Never going to happen.

Tip for consumers:
You will only LOSE money with an American Express card.
It's not a luxury card, go with your bank that you have a relationship developed.
This is a fee based shell game that you cannot win.

Discover - 10

No one excepts Amex because of there fees. The only card that charges you to use out of country or in country. Do your research find a better card.

I called Amex Platinum card customer service to request help with the various security codes, safe key numbers and other hurdles they now place in your way with online purchases. Once I eventually got through the relentless answering machine options to actually speak with someone, he was arrogant, aggressive and totally unhelpful. And then, mid-way through a sentence that I was explaining for a third time, he simply hung up! Is this what I pay annual membership fees of 720 Euros a year for? Disgraceful behaviour!

I know companies complain about the high fees, but for consumers Amex cards are by far the best in terms of rewards and other perks like fraud protection and rental car insurance coverage. A number of American Express cards are now free and their travel services are also really useful. Consumer service is also very good. The only real downside is that more places don't take it. But that's okay if you have 1 backup card.

After failing to collect 3 direct debits without calling me to ask for the money they have now messed up my credit rating causing me major problems raising a mortgage. I've left two messages to complain, no response yet. Thanks American Express your the best.

Stay away from this disloyal organization. They throw you away like a piece of garbage over a silly technicality despite being one of their highest spenders, reliability and promptness in settling one's dues, after so many years. They are willing to tear you to pieces, defame you, ruin your reputation for the sake of some draconian policies even if you try to present them with evidence to dispute their false allegations. They have no respect, no consideration no morals! They allow small timing bureaucrats in their company to pass judgements and to decide a long standing good client's future. Good riddance to bad rubbish!

Overall very happy with its benefits. There are sometimes, however, where the services crash but I can imagine that its due to the excess of people using them. Their customer service and user points are really amazing!

I have had my card for years now. The customer service is the best, you don't hear that too much anymore. There rewards program is really great. Your can set up an account with Amazon and even pick items from there, and some others. I would highly recommend this card to anyone.

American Express used to value their customers but not sure what happened but recently they don't. Have been a loyal customer for 14 years only to be rewarded with a lower approval limit makes no sense

I mailed 4 money orders together in a priority mail envelope. I received credit for 3 not 4. I was told their machine must of destroyed it. Now I get to wait 60 days and pay $17.30 to the USPS to get my money back. Instead of trying to help the customer service agent scolded me on the phone about how I should only send 1 payment, well you can not get money orders for over $1000. We charge a lot of money on AMEX but after this months charges are paid off we will never use the card again.

Most Dishonest company out there. Your calls go to another country with a different culture that could not understand them and they don't understand you.
After all these years that I gave them over $100,000 business per year, they showed their thru face. Pandemic put a toll on all small businesses. AMEX was the only one to lower my spending limit all the way ($2000 a month) what a joke. I took my business to B of A. They are very understanding and pro-business. Amex company doesn't care about your success pandemic or not? Greedy Greedy Greedy.
The different fees often make or break a deal for a merchant. This is why many merchants, especially small businesses, don't accept American Express. American Express' interchange fee is just way too high. Providers like Visa and Mastercard charge between 1.5% and 2.5%, while Amex charges merchants between 3.5% and?. They only care for big businesses not small ones like us.

This is THE credit card to carry and use, and it is the oldest.

There are several levels of cards for holders -- each level is designed to meet the specific needs for its client: travel, large purchases, fat bonus points, etc.

An AmEx card/account is not for everyone, mind you. You must settle up the balance due each month, or risk a hefty penalty. It is not financially designed for those living from paycheck to paycheck. But, if you want to be able to conveniently charge your purchases, travel, dining, etc, this is the most respected, prestigious and least hassle-free.

Really and truly -- do not leave home without it.

Hi,
Stay away from amex. They just told me that all my card features (including using miles for flights) were blocked if i do not male the current payments. This was a lie. Amex went to lying to its customers for payments. Stay away from this company.

Since it outsourced to Malaysia, the services are terrible now. They don't care about customer requests and didn't reply the email. The first credit card company refused to waive off the late charge just only $94.34 as I didn't receive the paper bill statement and used the wrong card. Owe them $129.00 but charge me so high interest. I asked them to check my records I always paid the bill on time. They don't even bother. Vomiting blood to waste my time to deal with all lazy, inefficient staffs! I not even want to rate a star for them but the system requested. Zero star for American Express

Ive cancelled two American Express Accounts recently, the Delta Platinum and the Hilton Ascend cards. In each case, American Express found reasons in the small print to deny the sign-up bonus. Their disclosures are misleading and explanations disingenuous. The customer service people were impossible to deal with - with incomprehensible accents, extremely long wait times, inflexible policies, and inability to communicate with any supervisor with any authority to make reasonable decisions. With so many competitive cards, with banks that actually have excellent customer service, Im taking my business where it is actually welcome.

American Express is simply not worth it. I could write out a long story as why they don't care about customers and how in the end you will lose doing business with them. The bottom line is that Amex is big company and they mare only out for themselves and profit.

Tip for consumers:
If you are a business, go to your local bank. Set up a credit card their and conduct your business there. Amex is definitely not a company you want to depend on.

I used Amex as a source of credit to make business purchases. My balance was paid in full every month and I never carried any of it over.

Beware if you have an Amex card and any fraud occurs. This has been going on since April and it's now October. Some fraudster made several charges on our card. Citibank did not catch it right away, so the charges accumulated. A Visa card was also fraudulently charged during the same time. VISA caught it on the second charge. When Amex finally discovered the fraud, they called and asked us to indicate which charges were fraudulent, in writing, which we did. Still, no resolution for months, even after numerous phone calls to customer service. In the meantime, they have charged us late fees on items we did not buy and have reported us to the credit bureaus, even though we were assured on the phone that they would not do so. So we can pay for things we didn't buy or have our credit damaged further. Thanks a lot, American Express! We will be closing this account immediately. I will never do ANY business with Amex again!

We hired a vendor to build wine lockers for our new restaurant. After months of delays from the vendor and them no longer responding to us we realized they went out of business after 38 years. This vendor did not notify us at all and we had already paid them a large some amount of money. We called American Express to see if there is anything we could do and they immediately agreed to dispute this and reimbursed all our money that we paid the vendor. We are very grateful and do not feel any other credit card company would have stepped up they way they did for us. Thank you kindly!

The main reason for my rating is customer service. I've been enraged by it several times and the agents are dodgy when asked a direct question. The second reason for my rating is I don't like how their online accounting is set up. It makes more sense to get paper copies IMHO. The third reason is their ultra strict policies and inability to be dynamic based on situation. I literally could have prevented a fraud, but they make you go through an ignorant and (costly to the people) fraud process. I have difficulty with blatant stupidity. And the final reason is the inability to use it with some merchants. Not that I ever kept a balance, but the interest rates are just shy of 100% illogical. No one in their right mind should ever carry a balance, but unfortunately not everyone is versed in financial responsibility.

Its funny that their name allocation on the account page is limited to only ten characters and despite of a human, the machine also reads one's name incorrectly. And after six months of continuous feedback they don't even care to fix it.

I have been a customer for 18 years and ordered gift cards on line for an awards ceremony. Never received or heard back so called to find out that they cancelled the order and didn't let me know. Did have the cards for the ceremony. Have spent an hour and a half on two phone calls so far and still have not cleared up the issue. Seems that no one can take the responsibility to help me. This is not how you treat a loyal customer of 18 years and will probably not be a customer for much longer.

Staff came to my workplace to check if we take American express, explained we've had 3 people this year already check and we don't. The got very rude with my boss hid her identity tag called him a heroin addict and stayed outside the shop for ages being very rude. Disgusting behaviour

I was greatly astonished by American Express' customer service due to the lack of explanation of the credit limit denial. I've been with AmEx for 13 years. The only response I was getting on the phone was "repeating the same words that were making No Sense." I'm very disappointed. I may need to consider another credit card company that is more considerate of its customers.

I was an authorized user on my father's account for 14 months without ever missing a payment. As soon as he passed away they cancelled his account, leaving me with no credit card in order to run the house he left me. Despite my inheritance, they treated me like a stepchild, so I would never consider them in the future,
