Scott P. I cannot believe that every single person on this review page has something negative to say about archives.com. The only conclusion I can come up with is that the millions who have actually HAD a great experience with the site is just simply not saying so. This is now the second year I will be using the resource, and I just love what I've accomplished. I use it often and have been doing extensive research into 16 different lineages. I have been able to (with much patience) trace most of my ancestors back for 300 or more years. I'm sorry to hear how some have lost out. I love using this site. The only thing I have to complain about is that they do not have extensive background in continental Europe. Otherwise, I've really enjoyed the results.
This is a scam, they will give you 7 days, then auto charge your card, you have to call them to cancel no way to do it from your site, I was on the phone for a hour, to get a human. I will never use this again. They NOT REFUND YOU! I canceled in Feb over the phone, and then got charged again in March had to call again.
I signed up for a free trial. I gave them my debit card, to ensure that I was 18. Lol
I called to cancel within the month. The recording told me to go to the website. The website told me to call the phone number. After waiting on the phone for several minutes the call dropped.
I called my bank to stop the payment. I had to cancel my debit card. Now I have to wait 10 business days for a new debit card. At least I won't be charged $9.95 on Thursday.
Total scam and ripoff... charged $39.95 for reoccuring membership and then $27.83 for a birth certificate that I never received only received forms requesting and additional $22.00 and a copy of my divers license to be faxed. Credit Card Company would not dispute charge and Archives.com told me to f'off. DO NOT USE ARCHIVES.COM or you will have to cancel your credit card to keep them from continuing to charge you a membership fee and never receive promised documents.
They lure you in with an ad that promises to provide records you are searching for. Then you are forced to sign up for a trial period and provide your credit card information. Once in their site, the RECORDS ARE WORTHLESS. I completely forgot to cancel the trial subscription. After reading other reviews here, I see that cancelling may have become another issue altogether. A month later they, of course, charged me for a service I didn't use, I canceled and asked for a refund, but they must be desperate because they fought tooth and nail for the $9.99 and got it. STAY AWAY! You can most definitely find better info elsewhere on more reputable and customer-friendly websites.
Took me less than an hour to realize this site couldn't even produce the most common information that's available on free searches. Anything I looked up, they wanted additonal money from my credit card to do. I canceled minutes after joining. Beware of this scam site. They are only after your money and give you nothing in return!
Tip for consumers:
Don't do it, dont go there! RIPOFF!
I needed a copy of MY marriage license entered all my info, was told to sign up for free 15 day trial. Went to get paper work They did not even have it. CANCELED with in 10 min after setting up and STILL billed for a month of service $9.99 Bull$#*!! Company Paypal said they have had many complaints on them
This site is totally worthless. I attempted to find the records of 3 ancestors who I definitely knew were in the Civil War and 1 ancestor who was in the Revolutionary War, this site had NO records for all 4 of my ancestors. Total waste of money and time.
After signing up for a trial subscription, luckily through PayPal, I found it couldn't even provide me with a Birth Certificate. When I tried to scroll down pages, my screen locked. How could it not be able to provide a birth certificate?
There I was trying to find out who my great grandparents are. This place seemed legit at first and a good place to find some actual records. They aren't. The website doesn't even work below the top margin. They made signing up super easy to sign up and literally nothing on their website below the top small bit. I can't even contact them to know how complete garbage they are because nothing on the website works. I just hope the "free trial" doesn't come back to bite my heinie later.
Scam! Do not sign up for this. Someone is using a different email address to access this website; but, using my credit card in accordance to charge my personal credit acct. STAY AWAY from this website! Caveat Emptor!
I did not find the record I was looking for. So I email wanting to cancel. Well they still charged me forty dollars. I canceled the membership as soon as I was unable to locate a record because it was all old information; nothing current.
Thought I was on a county website to order copy of marriage certificate - somehow got to Archives.com/Ancestry.com. Charged $39.78 for two copies with 2-3 weeks mailing time. Immediately cancelled, but was told items already ordered and couldn't cancel. Called county office and ordered two copies for $4.00 and SASE with maybe a week mailing time after check received.
Such a scam! They falsely advertise that you can search for birth records, death records, etc, when all they have access to is census data. Then they make it nearly impossible to cancel your membership. As a matter of fact they have a section for canceling a subscription, which is easily found under account settings and is worded to make you think you've canceled your membership. Then they bill you and refuse to refund the money.
STAY AWAY!
It was a horrifying experience. Tried the 7 day "free trial". Cancelled it after 5 days since you couldn't even get the basic info, including info on myself, I was experimenting, which came up empty, go figure *eye roll*. They charged me $9.99 2 days later, they tried to charge me $40 for the newspaper crap but thankfully there wasn't enough money for that, I submitted a support ticket and even they acknowledged that it had been cancelled and it was in the billing process when it was cancelled. They said it should correct itself. Well it never did but I was just going to cut my losses in hopes it actually was cancelled, but a month later they charged me again, same price for my cancelled subscription. They did not answer my emails, they did not answer their phone. I had to contact PayPal and got my refund and instantly won my other dispute and even had to fill out a form to stop all further unauthorized transactions from them, I repeat, do not do it!
I tried the 7 day trial and found I wasn't getting the information I was lead to believe I would get. All information was very generic, so I cancelled. Then I find out they never cancelled me out and had been withdrawing from my account right along. It took a long heated argument to get them to cancel me and they would only refund me i month. This site is a scam.
BEWARE CONSUMERS! Archives.com is a company owned by Ancestry.com. Yes it has records you can review when doing genealogy research but you are limited to the amount of records available to you. Once you have reviewed the few records they offer on Archives.com they refer you to Ancestry.com for the thousands of records available. The catch is you have to pay for Ancestry.com as well. So instead of purchasing Archives.com on a monthly basis why not make the purchase to Ancestry.com for basically the same amount of money AND you get access to ALL the records. The owner of Ancestry.com and Archives.com, being the same person, is scamming you to get you to join both. Why? To add to his pocketbook. Consumers please don't fall for this scam.

BEWARE CONSUMERS! THIS IS A SCAM!
I have been charged 5 times in one day. I called them and said hey that wasn't me. They then told me it didn't go through and I told them it did go through five times. She said it shows it failed six times on their end. I would recommend and if I could then I'd leave no stars.
I had a suspicion about this site, and almost did the same thing as described above: provide my CC info, check it out, then possibly cancel if it was bogus info.
THANK YOU ALL for taking the time to write about your experiences! I'm sorry you lost money, but I really appreciate you taking the time to warn others like me. :) You saved me money I could not afford to lose.
Too bad you can't rate this site a negative 5! I couldn't find anything on my grandmother who lived from 1937- 1977, but I found birth, death, census, white page listings, etc... on ancestry.com. I've only been a member for about an hour, but after seeing these reviews I'm very glad I used the pay pal option! I've also already cancelled my account and am currently on hold with customer service to MAKE SURE THIS TAKES PLACE!
Took my money and won't let me sign in saying I haven't paid. Archives used to be a good site. Called the phone number for them noted on my bank account and they denied that I had paid.
STAY AWAY FROM ARCHIVES.COM. I signed up for 1 month trial and appropriately cancelled. Found they have since billed my business charge card for 5 months. They weren't even consecutive months! I emailed them and they replied back that I had not cancelled correctly! My account info also said 'no charge card info'... so how had they charged the 5 months. Yikes.
I cancelled my trial membership because the service couldn't find anything I was looking for and I cancelled early too: canceled effective 5/15/2019. And I still got charged the $49.95 for the service after a month... POS garbage website I don't recommend anyone use.
I cancelled my subscription the first day and was still charged. Didn't realized I never recieved a credit back until a month later when I was charged again. I called them and you could hear another representive repeating someones information back to them. Still have not recieved my credit for this charge. I believe that this is not a legitimate company. On the rating stars should be a 5 minus.
I should've read these reviews first. The previous descriptions are fully accurate. As useful as, but less transparent than every other "free" public records scam out there.
They are thieves. The 7 day free trial is a scheme. They will charge you no matter what. I'm trying to figure out how to get them arrested for robbery.
DO NOT GIVE THESE GUYS ANYTHING> We have had the exact experience as those above. Found they charged our card for a renewal, immediately called them and they basically said too bad they would cancel my account but not refund what they had just charged because it was outside their refund policy.
