I called Discount Power, who I believe is an NRG company because a customer survey had their URL, produced a 10.5 cents/ kWh offer with a deposit and a 2 year contract. I gave the customer service rep my old account number from when I had an 11.8 cent/kWh rate with them. She checked my payment history and said I qualified for a waiver of the deposit and would transfer me to. A supervisor to authorize the waiver. I was transferred to an automated customer survey instead. I called back to get the deposit waiver the next day and was denied. I soon got a letter stating I still owed the deposit dated two days after I has paid it by a credit card. I was also informed that my rate had almost doubled to 20.5 cents/kWh and a $295 fee was required to break the contract. You never need a deposit or contract when you are paying a rate that high. I have filed a complaint with the Texas Utility Commission for bait and switch fraud.
