Horrible company! Charges fees at the counter that are not authorized and have zero documentation of proof that the charges were approved by anyone. Their customer service agents just repeat themselves over and over again that the charges were approved at the counter by the agent there but show zero documentation of any signature or any kind of approval.
I recently rented a Jeep SUV from the Newark Liberty International Airport Location on 05/31/2018. There was a terrible sound coming from the engine. The Bluetooth system did not work. The car charging port did not work. The windshield wipers needed to be replaced. It was raining while I was traveling, and I could not see clearly, I had to stop twice at gas stations to clean the windows. Whenever you accelerate the transmission was slow to shift gears. I would have returned and exchanged it out for another, however, I was on a tight schedule and did not have time. I stopped renting from Dollar Rental because of its reputation for its inferior products. Dollar Rental car has a reputation for not properly maintain their vehicles. The only reason I rented from Dollar was because I used Hotwire to bid on a vehicle. Had I realized Dollar Rental was on the list of options, I would not have used hotwire.
I rented from them in February 2023. I parked in a parking garage and there was column to the left rear of the car. I forgot about it and when I backed out I looked left and right and then at the backup camera as it was a garage and not a busy street. The column was perfectly in my blind spot and I turned too quickly and scraped and dented the door. The repair bill was sent to my insurance who found dollar failed to provide evidence they cost that much. My insurance company kept in constant contact with me and has requested documentation several times but dollar will not return their calls. When you rent from them you sign something that says in the event of damages, YOU the driver will have to seek payment from the insurance, the driver is responsible for all amounts due. The only communication I have received from dollar is a statement, a threat to send to collections and harassing calls saying they will sue if I don't pay. The claim is still under review with my insurance today and I am in collections with dollar for them not fulfilling their obligations. This has tanked my credit and caused significant stress. I'm learning they do this all the time. Do not rent from them.
We rented a car with Dollar Rent a Car in the beginning of October from Chicago. When we got to Chicago to pick up the car the agent asked us if we wanted to add the Insurance and we said NO. We had the car for 7 days and when we returned it they said they would email us a receipt which they never did. When I finally was able to see my receipt I see that they charged me for the Insurance $131.00. Called them and did no good at all. So beware if you rent from them and check everything you sign with them. You would think since we told him we did not want the Insurance he would not add it to our bill.
I did not incur any of the charges listed on a letter I received from Dollar rental concerning toll charges. I paid EVERY toll that I approached with cash. I did not & would not ignore paying a toll as it is the law. The charges & the costly administrative fees are not warranted and was wrongly charged. If they charge my card I will dispute it as it is not fair & I do not owe them.

Hire more receptionists during busy times! Showed up at to pick up car after deplaning and the line at the Dollar counter was 200 feet long and not moving! One worker! It would have taken hours to get a car. Went to the Enterprise counter and had a car in 5 minutes! Of course, I had to eat the prepaid amount to reserve a car with Dollar! I WILL never do business with Dollar again! Beware!
The Dollar Rental Car at DTW was severely understaffed. Also, they charged for an additional driver after Priceline switched the driver on the car when I signed up for a Priceline account; this was Priceline's fault, but Dollar had the power to reimburse me but refused to.
Don't hire your car with this company! Dollar Rent A Car are cheaters. We booked a car with autohuren.nl and paid almost 500 euro for a car. On the airport they didn't accept the Mastercard. The guy at the desk couldn't help us, he said and he turned his back. Thanks to Europcar we could hire another car! They wanted to help us, the other company not... One star is even too much.
I rented a Kia Rio at the Atlanta, GA airport and was told by the rep that if I took the pre-paid gas option they would credit me back money if I didn't us the full tank of gas. I returned the car and used less than 1/4 of a tank of gas, which would have cost maybe $10. Instead I found out that the $25.70 (1.96/gal) was not going to be pro-rated and that it was stated in the agreement.
Maybe DOLLAR SHOULD TRAIN THEIR REPS BETTER. I feel they ripped me off. I will never rent from them again. There are too many other companies to choose from. Shame on you Dollar.
I prepaid ahead of time. When I got there they asked for my credit card for My deposit. No problem than they said they only take major credit cards. Not debit credit cards. Not what I was told when I booked. Not truthfull.
DO NOT RENT A CAR HERE.
They scam you in front of your nose.
After a flight of 11 hours and TWO HOURS of waiting in front of the Dollar desk, they have scammed us. Women behind the desk "only" needed our signature for the deposit. Well okay, we thought. Nothing was explained. We drove away with our car and after checking our creditcard after a few days we were SHOCKED. They have added a premium road service we NEVER AGREED TO. We tried to call immediately but they are NOT reachable. After calling for 2 hours (!) a women picked up and she was everything but helpfull. Even moody and saying we had to fill in a complaint form. We did so but the form was out of service. Such a bad and scammy company scamming travelers while they are EXHAUSTED. Shame on you.
Had reservation for rental car when I tried to change pick up time they said they could not do it I would have to cancel my reservation and rebook it when I did they tried to charge me higher rate they are a rip off and will never do business with them again.
2 hour wait for a pre paid car. Not a line at the counter - they were short on the cars themselves. I saw some people with reservations get turned away.
I was double charged I was charged at the time of my rental and then charge the same amount at the end of my rental what's going on here 3 days after I drop the car off, now scammers I'll never rent from them again I want my money back
After a terrible flight totaling 11.5 hrs from London to Orlando, I checked in for my Dollar rental car tired, exhausted & jet lagged. I was asked at the desk if I would like to return the car empty & they would lock in the price of $4.50 per gallon. I agreed and was asked to sign. I signed.
Although the gas station price was only $3.50 something, I figured it was a mistake but I'll live with it.
When I received my Credit card bill on my return I discovered I had also been charged $224.75 for 'Premium Road Service' (whatever that is).
I had not been asked about this 'service' & if I had, I would have certainly refused. My total (extra) payments for Dollar was $360.80.
THIS IS A TOTAL RIP OFF!
As stated, my signature is on it, but after almost 12 hrs in the air etc, who is going to read all the small print, or think that a major rental company like Dollar will be conning people like that?
I don't suppose that I will get any refund, but wanted to put it out there & warn anyone using Dollar that they will try to con you, so beware and read everything before you sign.
Before leaving to return the rental to their LAX location about 45 miles away, I filled up the gas tank. But I used up a bit of gas due to heavy traffic and high a/c usage. To ensure they got their car back with completely full tank, I stopped at the gas station right across the street from their return location. It was $3 and some cents, paid cash and didn't feel a need to ask for a receipt. But Dollar rental car charged me penalty of $10 or $15 for not showing them the gas receipt. They agreed that the gas gauge showed completely full. The rude manager guy insisted that their staff told me about the policy simply because they were instructed to do so. How does he know all his staff were doing 100% job 100% of the time? He then told me it was in the contract that I signed. That, I believed even though I didn't want to go thru the contract which was literally at least 2 feet long narrow piece of paper and in fine prints. I realized that it was intentional cheat. Who can read such a documents, but it does cover themselves. All it takes is don't advise the customers verbally and Dollar gets to collect extra money.
For work, I used to pick up a rental car on Mondays and return on Fridays. For decades of renting cars, I had never had any rental car company requiring a gas receipt. But still easy to comply if they had told me so. But really, how is a gas receipt going to tell Dollar whether the customer filled up the gas tank fully? It only shows how much gas was purchased, not how full the gas tank was filled up. IMO, completely intentional to profit unethically.
After waiting in line at the Charlotte, NC airport branch (about 45 minutes) to be waited on, I told the customer rep I didn't want any extras including insurance and gas. When I returned the car, I had filled it with gas about 5 miles from the airport. The rep at the return site was very nice and had me sign off on my receipt. I didn't notice that I was being charged the fuel option $63.29, so I called the company to have that charge negated. I'm absolutely certain I declined ALL options including the fuel. The customer service rep was unhelpful, to say the least. He insisted I had no recourse but to pay, because I signed off when I got to the airport, despite the fact that I refilled the gas right before returning the car. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. AS IT WAS CLEAR THE REP WASN'T IN ANY WAY WILLING TO SEE IF THIS COULD BE RECTIFIED. Would not recommend these folks to anyone and don't plan on doing business with Dollar again.
Do not rent from Dollar! I rented a car in LA. They told me to just go pick one from "Lot 3". I walked around and did my assessment. But they don't require anything back. I left. I brought the car back a few days later. Clean and full of gas. The guy who I returned it to did not look at it then. He just told me to leave the keys in it and I could leave. The day after I got home I looked at my credit card balance and noticed that my $53 rental was now $453! I checked email and nothing from Dollar. No phone call either. So I called their customer support and was told they "smelled ashes" and therefore I was charged $400 for smoking in the car. I DON'T SMOKE, I never have. But with all my pleading to try and tell them that there was no way this could have happened, they just assumed I was lying and said there was nothing they could do for me. I asked to talk to a supervisor and was told that "none were available". This is either "standard practice", a way to scam people, or their check-in system is flawed. There was no way I could defend myself since this "audit" on the car was done AFTER I left. I'm in the process of disputing this thru my credit card company. I am having to try and "prove" that I am not a smoker, so next stop is my doctor. This is ridiculous to have to go thru this, and I wonder how many other people are being charged false "fees" without the ability to dispute any of them. Again... DO NOT RENT FROM THESE GUYS!
This is the worst rental car company I have ever seen. I was charge over $900 than I was suppose to be paying and there was nothing they could do about it they claimed. Would never go there.
After about 6 hours of PHONE HOLD, Dollar decided to replace disabled car by towing one from very far away, even though they had a location much closer. Now they have CHARGED ME THE TOW cost. They are balking at issuing me a credit. A supervisor was to call me back... but~~
Answer: Not easy at all. No phone number available. They force you to go through Facebook Messenger to communicate. A joke of a company. Don't give them your business.
Answer: An absolute scam of a company. Look at the reviews on Yelp, Google, BBB, etc. This company is owned and filled by unethical people lying and misleading customers to steal their money.
