Gumtree is a very clean and functioning website, although it is riddled with scammers and spammers.
But if you are cautious and follow the necessary precautions, then you will be fine and can often sell items on Gumtree without a hitch. I recommend this website, just be careful not to get scammed.
I do wish that the approval processing times after posting or updating an ad was quicker than it is, but it's not too bad.

Tip for consumers:
When selling an item you should always meet up in person and have the person pay in cash or have them make an instant EFT directly into your bank account. Never ship/give the item to anyone without first receiving cash in hand or seeing the payment reflect in your bank account. No exceptions.
Also, when meeting up make sure to meet up in a safe, public space and not somewhere dodgy.
