“Awesome Garden City Kumon”

Serena L.
2/5/23

I'm very grateful to both amazing Kumon teachers (Ms. Lydia Wong & Mr. Keith Wong) and the staffs at Garden City Kumon. My kids have been successful and passionate in Mathematics because of the teaching, guidance & the support they get from Garden City Kumon. I'm so pleased of what my boys are doing at Kumon. They're not only learning math beyond their grade levels, but also building up their confidence, independence & accountability. Thank you for shaping my boys' characters along the way! Years well spent in Kumon. I would highly recommend Kumon to all parents to build a strong & solid foundation for your children's academic development. A big thank you to Lydia & Keith for sharing your talent and continuous hard work to teach the younger generations. You guys are awesome and our children's role models :)

“Mental and physical health worsened”

Brian S.

Which kumon excessive amount of homework, you could loose exercise, time with family and friends, and outside. Also, Kumon may cause children to be involved in a conflict with a parent. Kumon is also very expensive. The teachers only rely on answer books to help students, giving no info why that is the correct answer. The homework can cause children to have no time in finishing school homework, causing grades to worsen.

I go to Kumon in Queens, New York. The teachers don't even help you when you ask for help and expect you to know everything, they give lots of homework but if you are a 3rd grader and up I wouldn't recommend since of school homework and how kumon gives at least 20-30 pages of homework which is a waste of time since kumon makes you only focus on one thing. Hence, it makes you forget other things you have learned so it does not help you. In my experience in Kumon, I've been in Kumon for at least a year, I have a teacher named Mr. Jeff, he will yell at you constantly, assume things and if you go up for help he will jus say for you to go back to your seat and answer it and says he cant help you when he is actually free doing nothing, and the graders are horrible, once I put in my math work and nobody else put in there work for about the past 1 hour and I received my corrections in 45 minutes for just 10 pages of work.

I go here still, but it SUCKS. First of all, they give SO MUCH homework. It's terrible. And they time you. They say "mastery" but it's really speed and answers. Not even taking your time, it's so stupid. 2. honestly, the teachers aren't professional at all. I swear they hired some random young ladies and trained them for 10 minutes and called them skilled mathematicians. If your gonna own a math company, at least hire skilled people. 3. the so called "teachers" don't do ANYTHING. They are so lazy. They just sit there and use their answer book and write a big 100. They don't even help you. If you have a new concept, expect for them to say "figure it out yourself". I don't think anyone's paying for math for $100 a month. This is more like torture. 4. i have trouble focusing and a teacher likes to startle me. They also scream at you and say "PAY ATTENTION" like, excuse me? You could've said it quieter. 5. they all sit on their phones most of the times they aren't grading. It's so stupid and we're paying for nothing.

My experience going there. First the reason I don't recommend going there is they make you do some test and they only give you 15 expecting you to Finnish it light speed and it multiplication, devision, adding, and subtracting I didn't do it on time but did really good on the test but they said I couldn't do multiplication and devision cause of my time what they did is make me do adding and subtracting which I already knew and that was a waste of my time cause they give you like 4 packets of this work math and reading they expect you to do in a week which was a waste of time since I already knew that. The reason why they make you do this is because they want to make it look like your kid is learning something. If you wanna save your money I would just recommend making your kids do khan academy or you can find a really good program that show instructions on your learning plus you can start them off a grade level they are. The second reason is mentally health this stuff made me stressed out on how much things I had to do in a week (every week), let's say they have a lot of homework that's due at the end of the week you have muti task to make sure you have that 4-5 packets done so they don't make you redo that stuff and make you do it again. Just please don't sigh your kids up for look for a cheaper program or a free please.

We are disgusted with this Kumon center. This Kumon center is run by a psycho-nutjob woman named Nicole Smith. Kumon's Nicole Smith is abusive to parents and students. This idiotic instructor of Kumon Nicole Smith is foul mouthed and rude. If approached about Kumon Nicole Smith twists a conversation into making it the other person's fault. Please stay away from Kumon and the instructor of Kumon Nicole Smith and Kumon of Hamilton Westend

Too much stress, overly repetetive, methods aren't up to date, they don't teach anything at all, you figure everything by yourself, the examples barely help. Not worth it at all.

When I went to go take the test they put me to D because I got only 1 problem wrong, I got a the algebra problems correctly, when I was finished and I got on H, I asked for help for a few problems because I kept getting them wrong, when I asked them for help, they just tell me to skip it or do it at the end, I was literally crying and hiding my face but they didn't do anything and they acted like I didn't exist. I would prefer you to take other learning centers like Sylvan because it helped me with algebra and all the way I got to precalculus when I came to 9th grade, I am surpassing all of the other kids at my school and I have an avg GPA of 3.9. I am also taking Physics on sylvan tutor for college and it is really helping me. This company doesn't even deserve a star.

I GOT SIGNED UP FOR KUMON IN 2018 AND KUMON IS MY #1 HATED CLASS. I SEE AT LEAST THREE KIDS FLIPPING THEIR DESKS AND ONE KID RIPPING THEIR KUMON BOOKS TO SHREDS. AND ON TOP OF THAT I HAVE BASKETBALL, INSTRAMENT, LANGUAGE, SWIMMING, CODING CLASSES, AND ACCUALL SCHOOL. NONE OF THE KUMON BOOKS ARE HELPING ME IN SCHOOL. AND ALL THE KIDS ARE JUST DEPRESSED.

It's awful. I do my kumon, forcefully, but then i realise tomorrow i need to repeat the same process. It got so bad, that when somebody would say kumon, i'd stutter for a while and jump back and look horrified. The questions are so annoying. Repetitive. Confusing. It doesn't give enough explanations. When they do give an explanation like 2/5 x (14/29 (4/29 divide 3)) =, they give longer questions.
It's so confusing. When there's long question, you are bound to get the question wrong. This was real in one case when they put like 12 equations and expected you to answer it.
The worst part is time management. How the f* do i do this in my GCSEs. HOW. HOW! OH YES LET ME FOCUS ON SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT, AND NEXT WEEK INSTRUCTOR SAYS "why have you not done your kumon?" It's annoying. When I go out with my mates or somewhere with family, if we go for an hour or more, i start getting worried and anxious that i have kumon to do. It's annoying. I can't enjoy my holiday espceially because on my holiday i go and visit 7 hours of the day, so i barely have time to do kumon. And even if i do, i would only have very little time to relax. Never, never, ever send your child here. Summary 1: overexpensive. 2: Repetitive. 3: Boring. Hard. Alot of work. 4: Nobody cares if you're struggling in the kumon centre. Overall, 1/5..

Medford, NJ - I enrolled my 10th grader to improve geometry. We never received the work we needed. She was begun at an early level to learn to add figures quickly. While this may be helpful, it was not what we requested. It was taking too long to advance, and my schedule became busy so that I wasn't able to continue after about a year. It would behoove center owners and managers to ask how long clients could realistically stay with the program and what their goals are to design it with the customer in mind. In addition, it would be helpful for them to ask periodically how happy we are with the service. With dissatisfaction comes negative word-of-mouth, which reduces possible business. It's up to the client, then, to be firm about their time frame and exactly what they want their student to learn if they are to be successful with Kumon, especially with an older child who is on a schedule. I trusted the owner, however, I passively accepted her guidance. I think many others have been dissatisfied as it is almost impossible to find even one review! (I searched diligently to find this thread.) Remember, you are the client - be firm about what you want your money to buy!

I am now 18, but I was put in the Kumon program when I was in 4th grade and then taken out when I was in 6th. This program looks amazing with the "extra help for your kid", but it's also A LOT of extra work for a child. In the program there are 2 days where you come in and get "extra help" on your current work and receive work for the upcoming days. In the two days you spend inside the building it seems like they would help you out with work but actually they just told me OH THAT WRONG and sent me back to my seat, I actually cried in front of everyone because of how overwhelmed I was. I remember when I wanted to have a fun time with my friends in the summer but couldn't because I was spending time inside doing my Kumon work alongside with my primary school work. I also remembered how when I was in 5th grade I did extremely difficult math(for my age) in Kumon compared to what I was actually doing in my classroom. What would be ideal for Kumon to do is help students with their school work and catch them up, instead of piling extra work on them. Lastly, I'm a huge advocate for people who battle anxiety and depression. Let your children have a social life and enjoy their early life. It's important for children to be on the right road to success but this program causes so much excess pressure on kids.

My mom enrolled me and my brother when I was in 4th grade and he was in kindergarden but he got on grade level work meanwhile I was put at a lower level and were flying by the problems so after a while my mom takes us out only to put us back in when I was in 5th grade then again my brother got grade level work so did I but they were lessons behind from what I was actually learning so it was hard for me because it wasn't what I was learning at the time and it was really confusing me and on top of that THE HOMEWORK was awful if I was on break from school I could forget about it because I STILL had kumon homework and had to go to kumon on top of that the graders we're doing anything but helping you and I had a new grader who was rasict and failed me on purpose but luckily my mom saw what they were doing and how what they made me do and what I was learning was not the same thing and took us OUT I am happy but PLEASE DON"T TAKE YOUR CHILD THERE it's a waste of your time, gas, and money

I used to go there and the learning material was repetitive, and boring. They said ask for help i fu need to and i did. But then i got pawned off to an example that is for a question like 9+8, while i am doing some albert einstein ahh question with like ************** numbers brackets and letters in it. Used to cry, and be scared when i used to go because i was like, OH time to get yelled at. One time I couldn't mark my books (ONE TIME), and one of the instructors yelled at me saying oh well you should have done it, look, our younger students can why cant you? Bro please shush. Instead of yelling at me, ask me why, and then see if it is valid or nah. Also you can't just yell at everyone and then expect them to be looking like :) the next second can you. Also yall used to have a help desk. It takes like 10-15 minutes just to get help, and then they help horribly. They used to have a help desk but not anymore. Also yall trippin if u think this is 5 star nuh uh.

ALso i did the entry test, and they made me start at a low level which was liek 1+1,0+8,13+6. I needed help with times tables. What a lovely way to drain money from peoples lives and to make them stay longer, and suffer longer, and to waste more tears, energy, time, make them behind in school, cause deppression, and to manipulate eveyone, and lie saying "oh 5 star, we provide best education, children will be confident"

I will never recommend this absolutely dishonourable service to anyone.

You can improve by actually helping kids, and actually talking to the parents and kids to see what they really need help with.

My parents started me in Kumon in 3rd grade with basic addition of single digit plus single digit numbers and the very basic reading worksheets. I finished the Kumon reading program in 9th grade. I struggled but finished the Kumon program in 10th grade, scoring between 80% - 90% on most worksheets. I always thought I wasn't good at math and my reading comprehension was low. When we had to take yearly assessment tests in elementary and middle school, I was always below grade level. Fast forward to 11th grade, I hit my stride and scored so high on the PSAT, I became a national merit scholar and I also got a 35 on the ACT. It turns out the 80% I was scoring on the Kumon translated into master. I was accepted to many of the most competitive universities. Yes, I ABSOLUTELY HATED Kumon but know I wouldn't have been able to learn everything just by going to school. It was very nice to have a strong math and reading foundation and build very good study habits from elementary school. I have been helping classmates since 9th grade. Many of them struggle with the same stuff I struggled with during Kumon, except I had struggle with it years before school so in school, it was a breeze. When I came across the same material in school, I had already learned it so it was a review for me. I don't think I would've ever been able to master the material just by going to school. While I hated it, it was much better than rotting in front a screen like most of my friends. I used my time to study, which I wouldn't ever change.
