Martha & Marley Spoon Reviews Summary

The overall reputation of Marley Spoon is significantly marred by consistent customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding product quality and customer service. Many customers report receiving spoiled or damaged ingredients, delayed deliveries, and inadequate responses from support staff. Common themes include frustration over unresponsive service and difficulty in canceling subscriptions, leading to perceptions of a predatory business model. While some customers enjoyed the meal recipes, the lack of organization in ingredient packaging and recurring quality issues overshadowed these positives. Overall, the company faces a critical need to improve its service reliability and customer engagement to enhance its reputation.

We were very excited to try what we thought was an upscale box kit. We couldn't have been more wrong.

The first meal was missing the sauce that was supposed to come with the chicken and the broccoli that they sent was spoiled/rotten. So that meal was white rice and dry chicken. Super Blah.

Second meal was pretty good -- took over an hour to make, but nothing to complain about.

Third meal the corn they sent was spoiled/rotten. So the final meal was a small piece of pork tenderloin and red cabbage. Super Super Blah.

The biggest thing that bothered me was the fact that their customer service simply couldn't care less. They have the same attitude as if I would call Martha directly.

There are MUCH better options out there that won't have you scrounging for food after you fix your $90 box.

Pros:
- Very nice recipe cards.
- Variety of recipes.
- Excellent for learning how to cook things a variety of ways, unlike HelloFresh that has you roast every vegetables.

Cons:
- Most of the recipes are good, but never great, especially the second side with every dish.
- Instructions are often unclear, for example, if you follow the directions literally, one recipe has you add fresh ground beef to scalding hot bacon grease.
- The packaging is terrible, it is very often that the ice packs and ingredients like yogurt, sour cream, and corn are broken up and spilled all over the interior of the box. I spent six weeks with this service and every single box had issues with losing ingredients due to packaging.
- Missing ingredients also plagued me nearly every week.
- This meal kit is more expensive and requires you to have more on hand than most other meal kits.
- Customer service takes awhile and the result isn't satisfactory. I lost a whole meal for two due to packaging errors and they gave me credit for $7 two weeks later.

I expected a lot out of this meal kit with Martha's name on it, especially for the price. However, there are way too many issues with this kit that I'm not surprised it is not the leader in the market. I would rather stick to the monotony of HelloFresh over this.

Horrendous
July 14, 2020

Horrible customer service. Difficult to get ahold of anyone to actually resolve problems and they make you jump through hoops to even have something addressed. The shipping is horrendous with boxes almost ALWAYS arriving late despite what the tracking says. And customer service is not helpful at all when resolving those problems, and all they tell you is as long as the meat is still "cool to the touch" you'll be okay. The items always arrive damaged, dirty or close to being spoiled. The meal ideas are very creative and great, don't get me wrong, but the hassle of everything else is making this not worth it. I originally switched over from HelloFresh because I was getting tired of the recipes, but their customer service is stupendous in comparison. I will be going back to HelloFresh.

Missing ingredients
June 22, 2020

I ordered two meals to try the products. Each meal was missing ingredients. Such a pain, I had to stop in the middle of prep and turn everything off and go to the store. I won't order from them again.

First month or so all was fine. An occasional missing item but I'm well provisioned here at home... then they moved my date 4 days... and box was charged, but never shipped or delivered (illegal). Took several days to get a response... no explanation, apology... following week (almost three weeks since last box received) THAT BOX CAME THREE DAYS late (from their already changed delivery date) w several missing ingredients,... but no head up it was delayed... next two boxes also arrived three days after their email confirmed... at some point they changed the cold pack delivery to "warm pack?" Using insulation instead of ice... or maybe had to do with the fact that food was sitting in someone's garage or car for days... food rotten, slimes, smelly. There will be lawsuits from hungry folks w no other options eating this food and getting very sick. Costumer service and communication non existent and only way to get compensation is to protest the charge w credit card... which is easy with their emails confirming the "due" date, a screen shot of actual delivery from shipper, and photos of gray warm meat, slimy rotten vegetables, crushed yogurts... no way to depict rancid smell or missing ingredients... but no necessary. Go right to charge company or you'll be offered "refunded $8.99 for shipping" as compensation for the loss of $96 worth of food... during times of food insecurity... meanwhile... they obviously (read other reviews) can't service current clients, but continually push the "send free box" promotion to exponentially keep trolling for even more clients... resulting in even less control over quality, shipping, communications... Go try blue apron... save yourself and your peace of mind

First order arrived 5. 20. 20. First, there were MISSING INGREDIENTS! Ordered three meails only received two. Missing was an entire steak meal. In addition, the two meals we did receive were both missing ingredients. In addition, we received the wrong recipe menu cards. Emailed the support team immediately after opening the box to report the missing items. As of today 5. 21. 20, have not recieved a response other than an auto email informing that my email was received. Second, POOR QUALITY! My husband tried the mozzarella cheese right out of the package and was unable to chew it. He compared it to chewing bubblegum (it never dissolved in his mouth). He than proceeded to melt it and it never fully melted. After one delivery, I have cancelled our subscription. SERIOUSLY DISSAPPOINTED! IT WAS HORRIBLE! Would not recommend! There are better subscription services (i. E. Sunbasket and Blue Apron). I tried Martha & Marley Spoon to add variety, but that was a mistake. Still waiting on a refund and/or minimum a response.

What the Fish!
May 11, 2020

I wrote to the company 3 weeks ago to find out if they had at least two fish dishes each week. I specified that we do NOT eat shellfish. It took 3 weeks to get a response, which I included below in the photo, and it said they have 3-6 fish choices per week. So I signed up and there was only 1 fish choice per week so I cancelled and they sent me an emailthat I would receive my first order and then get cancelled. The policy said that I needed to cancel 6 days in advance, but the first order was set for May 23 which is 12 days from now. So then, I needed to contact them online in live chat to make sure they refunded me and cancelled my order. The employees don't know what fish is and theircomputersystem can't calculate 6 days. They are thieves and idiots!

I enjoy the meals. The quality is very good for the most part. My order 2 weeks ago was missing an ingredient, not a large problem. I overlooked this. My last order was missing the recipe cards. I can access the menue on line which solves the cooking problem but I would like to have the hard copy cards. I have requested the twice now and have not been able to
Have customer service send them.
They seem to prefer arguing with their customer rather than make any attempt to satisfy their customer. Again the food is
Good but their customer service has a east Germany attitude and seems to relish in their ability to show their customer who is the boss.

Very Disappointed
April 26, 2020

I have to say I am very disappointed. I received my first box yesterday, and when it got here, it was warm. I received it straight from the Fed Ex guy myself, so it wasn't sitting out at all. I went to make the Broccoli and cheese tortellini, and the Parmesan was missing. I went through the box to make sure I hadn't missed anything. When I went to get the items for my dinner tonight, the sirloin for the garlic lime marinated steak was missing. So I have no steak for the dinner I was planning on this evening. The Parmesan I can overlook, but the steak I cannot. Can't make the dish without that. I was excited to try this service, as I have a friend that has said great things, but my experience has been completely disappointing to say the least.

Awful
April 23, 2020

The WORST meal delivery box I have ever used- and I've tried most companies. The flavors just aren't there! The recipes sound great, and they offer so many options that look appealing, but they turn out incredibly bland. On one occasion, we weren't sent the steak for the meal, and I contacted the company and they refunded only $11? Out of the $30. They said it was justified because we still received other ingredients, even though we couldn't make the meal without the protein! On another occasion, the salmon we were cooking began to REEK. Like, completely rotten. Our entire house stunk the rest of the night. We were too scared to eat it. Portions of meat are also smaller than other delivery services ie, 2 steaks for 4 people. I have had 8 meals by this service and have not had one I would want to have again. Cancelling permanently.

Tried it for a month. Every box had damaged or rotten produce, missing ingredients, or meat that was not fresh. Required more ingredients of your own than other meal kits: vinegars, sugars, flour, eggs, ketchup. Even recipes that were titled "... with balsamic glaze" required you to provide the balsamic vinegar for that glaze. So disappointing. HelloFresh has less variety, but was definitely fresher and more reliable.

Ick.
March 29, 2020

Three meals received. One of the meals inside the box was not what we ordered. All three meals were missing ingredients. All three meals included old, mushy vegetables. No recipe cards were included in the box itself. It was as if a toddler packed the box. Martha Stewart should be ashamed to have her name associated with this company. This was our very first box. Subscription quickly cancelled. Advice? Go elsewhere (and not to Dinnerly, as they are a subsidiary of Marley Spoon). Ick.

We used to subscribe to Marley Spoon when we lived in North Carolina but we moved to Colorado and had to stop it for a while. Once we got settled in our new state, we started the subscription again and it was a nightmare. First, the delivery date offered was a Wednesday which we didn't like but were willing to work with. Second, delivery was guaranteed by 9pm which of course was not satisfactory but we enjoyed it the first time around and was excited for it again. As we waited for our first shipment, come 9pm it never came. I called customer service and they said there was a problem with our credit card so the order wasn't processed. I asked why we weren't notified and they couldn't give us an answer. I don't know what was wrong with the CC as we use it everyday but we gave them a new CC for the file and anxiously await our second shipment. Guess what, it never showed either. Waited again until 9pm and called customer service. They said it was picked up by Fedex but for some reason they couldn't get the delivery made as expected. The food is time sensitive so of course it would have been spoiled if we had to wait another day. While I felt bad for the CS Rep, he was very understanding when I told him I had it with the poor service and had no choice but to cancel the service. I don't know what happened to Marley Spoon but I was extremely disappointed to have to cancel the subscription as we really like the quality of the food they provided. The other food services just didn't compare.

Don't Do It!
February 14, 2020

I ordered not having been smart enough to research and read reviews. I've tried several home meal delivery kits and this by far the worst. First, you have to pay up front before the first delivery. If you want to cancel, too bad. Second, I requested delivery on a Tuesday. I came home from work on Monday night to find the box on my front porch! I have a reason for having requested Tuesday so this early delivery was not appreciated. Third, all items that need to be frozen or kept cold, regardless of what meal they belong to, are tossed into one bag, no separation. A bag of peas had split open and all of them were rolling around inside the large bag. The three meals are placed in brown bags and sealed with a huge sticker. Each bag basically has to be torn open. The meal cards were thrown in during the packing process, instead of after, so they were wedged between items and damaged. After tearing open the bags I had to go through all the items in the bag as well as through the random product stashed in the large bag to match ingredients against the cards. In addition to losing the peas, a carton of cherry tomatoes was missing from the box. I contacted customer service via email on 2/10 and got the robo response indicating it had been received. On 2/13 I had yet to hear back so emailed them again. It's 2/14 and I still have heard nothing. Aside from this, it's not as user friendly as other services. Two examples: a can of whole steamed tomatoes was included for the recipe. The instructions were to "use kitchen shears to cut tomatoes until finely chopped." Um, send a fresh tomato or a can of diced tomatoes. And wouldn't a knife be easier? Then for the same recipe a small block of Parmesan was sent with instructions to grate it. All other services send the cheese already grated. The meals were good but unremarkable. No problem with freshness. None of these things are a big deal to me in and of themselves, but all together in one shipment (the first shipment at that) makes for a really, really big desire to never use this service again. I have cancelled and would discourage others from trying it.

I ordered a week to try and as not going to be home for the following weeks due to an emergency called to try and cancel as I saw that there was money out of my bank account (then I realized you are on a membership). It is now Wednesday and as the delivery is NEXT Monday called to cancel to be told it must be 6 days... Customer service told me that they could donate my meals to a charity or send somewhere else... so not happy

Allright
December 30, 2019

Dear Marley Spoon, please do not sent emails after I have unsubscribed! I was a costumer for a while but stopped my order for good when I moved to another country. While I am successfully unsubscribed and can't do anything more than that I wish you would respect not to send any more emails.

As for the product: It was excellent to have the opportunity to choose out of I think 15 different dishes each week. However after a while those options felt quite similar. The food was of good quality and only once did I receive a box where the products where unfresh.

So aside from unwanted emails I all in all think the company does well and provides a nice low-cost service which can be trusted. They deliver on time and their notification system for delivery has never failed me.

Very tough meat, to tough to chew. Mashed potatoes tasted like sandpaper. It takes ~1 hour to make a meal that tastes bad, why would you buy that? One meal just came with an onion, why? No reason, it just went on the side like you were supposed to eat it. Carrots were able to bend before being cooked! I found 1 of my 4 deliveries to be "good". One of my deliveries arrived late. Overall, food is either terrible or mediocre, it takes to much time, and it has the tendency to arrive late.

This is my 4th and last order. My first order was delivered to my apartment office and wasn't given notification o pick it up. My instructions were to leave at my door, as I am home during the day to put ingredients away. When I contacted Marley and Spoon they gave me a half credit for the box and said they would contact the delivery company. I was told because of how they package their meals it should still be fine as long as the meat is not warm to the touch, which it was. My second and third orders were delivered to my door but ingredients were not fresh, produce was wilted, meat seemed questionable. This last box, delivery date today, was also delivered to the office, which I won't be able to get until tomorrow because the office is closed again. So this box will have to go in the garbage again. I have asked for a full refund, I am waiting on an answer. I don't recommend this at all. The main reason for ordering is because the items come directly to you, convenience, and you can make a meal quickly, can't if it's not delivered to you. I don't know about you, but I am not going to eat anything that has been sitting in a box too long and when the produce looks bad can you trust it at all? No thanks!
