Martha & Marley Spoon has a rating of 1.2 stars from 130 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Martha & Marley Spoon most frequently mention customer service, blue apron, and credit card problems. Martha & Marley Spoon ranks 97th among Meal Delivery sites.
We have tried pretty much all of the meal kits out there, but Marley Spoon has the best recipes and the largest menu to choose from every week. The meals do require some cooking skills as the timing is sometimes off, so you have to play it by ear. There a lot of reviews about missing boxes, which has happened in the past for us too. They use UDS which sucks, but they have always reimbursed us for the missing boxes and the customer service was beyond helpful. There hasn't been a meal that we haven't loved, and we are pretty picky. Give it a chance!
Beware these guys are cunning and relentless! Firstly to see their menus you need to put your credit card in. I was shopping around for this type of service, and although I promptly exited the site after reviewing the recipes, it automatically signed me up to a reoccurring order. Now here is the catch…. Once you receive your first order, by the time this is delivered your second order is locked in! So if you receive it and decide to cancel you still have an other order on its way, even if you haven't selected the items it will have preselected it for you! 6 days before my second order (the first one went to the wrong address) I asked for a refund and they refused. It went towards my next order of items I had never selected. We went back and forth all week. I was so shocked by their inability to assist an unhappy customer, I eventually threatened to go to the media. They didn't back down instead sending me the fine print that I signed up for before I had even laid eyes on their product. This company should be ashamed at their lack of integrity and willingness to accept or admit that their service is borderline predatory and filled with trickery. Lastly, when you finally do go in to cancel your account it says that doing so will remove any existing discounts, therefore incurring additional costs on your already committed order. How rude!
Pros:
- Very nice recipe cards.
- Variety of recipes.
- Excellent for learning how to cook things a variety of ways, unlike HelloFresh that has you roast every vegetables.
Cons:
- Most of the recipes are good, but never great, especially the second side with every dish.
- Instructions are often unclear, for example, if you follow the directions literally, one recipe has you add fresh ground beef to scalding hot bacon grease.
- The packaging is terrible, it is very often that the ice packs and ingredients like yogurt, sour cream, and corn are broken up and spilled all over the interior of the box. I spent six weeks with this service and every single box had issues with losing ingredients due to packaging.
- Missing ingredients also plagued me nearly every week.
- This meal kit is more expensive and requires you to have more on hand than most other meal kits.
- Customer service takes awhile and the result isn't satisfactory. I lost a whole meal for two due to packaging errors and they gave me credit for $7 two weeks later.
I expected a lot out of this meal kit with Martha's name on it, especially for the price. However, there are way too many issues with this kit that I'm not surprised it is not the leader in the market. I would rather stick to the monotony of HelloFresh over this.
The WORST meal delivery box I have ever used- and I've tried most companies. The flavors just aren't there! The recipes sound great, and they offer so many options that look appealing, but they turn out incredibly bland. On one occasion, we weren't sent the steak for the meal, and I contacted the company and they refunded only $11? Out of the $30. They said it was justified because we still received other ingredients, even though we couldn't make the meal without the protein! On another occasion, the salmon we were cooking began to REEK. Like, completely rotten. Our entire house stunk the rest of the night. We were too scared to eat it. Portions of meat are also smaller than other delivery services ie, 2 steaks for 4 people. I have had 8 meals by this service and have not had one I would want to have again. Cancelling permanently.
I'm here because Marley Spoon blocked me on facebook.
Here is the review they deleted.
I received a box I paid full price for on 7/25. It was completely busted, the box was leaking, the meat and ice packs mixed and all of the vegetables were covered in it. I couldn't eat any of it.
I immediately contacted customer service and I was to get a refund and a free box for my next one for the inconvenience. Well, I got charged this morning for the "free box" and I STILL DONT HAVE MY ORIGINAL REFUND. This company is shady and I am going to tell everyone who will listen that this is the case.
I talked their customer service rep "Michael" on the chat, since their phone hours weren't posted, was able to cancel my current box (instant refund, crazy) but still nothing about my other box. I will not be receiving the free box for my inconvenience at all. I have cancelled my account and this is the most rude customer service rep I've ever talked to. Avoid this company and meal service!
1) Not user-friendly.
We ordered from Marley Spoon/Martha Stewart for the first time this week. The shipment arrived as scheduled on Wednesday. The food came poorly packed and aggregated together rather than packged by as meals. The beef was tough. The meal, Mongolian BBQ tasted odd. The instructions needed to prepare the food are not included in the packaging, you have to get them online. This is just not a user-friendly system.
2) Poor Customer service
We called to cancel the day after our first shipment. The first agent said they had already shipped the second shipment. When I asked for a refund he refused stating that we had six days to cancel and we were past that point. I asked for a supervisor. She re-iterated the same thing. Our delivery day is on Wednesday. I spoke to them on a Thursday. The last time I checked a week has 7 days our next shipment should not have been sent or changed until the next day. I attached a screenshot to this review it says 5 days. Based on their web it should have been Friday before we were charged.
3) Simple Solution Denied:
All I wanted was a refund for a package we did not want and was sent against our wishes. Too much for them to handle.
Summary: Buyer beware - if you sign up for Marley Spoon, you will have a minimum 2-week subscription rather than a one-week trial run if you are unhappy.
Tip for consumers:
That meals are not packed separately, the recipes need to be downloaded.

I have tried pretty much every Cook@ home program out there (Blue apron, Sunbasket, etc) but I havent tried Marley spoon yet so I decided to give them a try. Tried Marley spoon... worst idea ever. The vegetables were of poor shape... I mean I could have picked better veggies from the supermarket myself... obviously I was upset with the quality of food so I tried to cancel and get refund of next shipment of Marley spoon and they REFUSED to give me my money back. I tried to even reach out to their supervisor/CFO and STILL NO RESPONSE! Wow. They really proved to me that they dont give a damn about their clients so obviously I will not be purchasing from them ever again and cannot recommend them to anyone.
Spoiled meat, incomplete recipes, poor packaging. DONT DO IT. This is trash. I sent a "report" and ALL I got was "we are too busy to get to this." Sooo yeah. Run. Martha $#*! It All
Tip for consumers:
Please ignore. Its just Martha spoiling her whatever name she has with decent prices. NOT WORTH it. Unless you like SPOILED CHICKEN and ROTTEN MEAT and FUNGAL VEGTABLES

I have to say I am very disappointed. I received my first box yesterday, and when it got here, it was warm. I received it straight from the Fed Ex guy myself, so it wasn't sitting out at all. I went to make the Broccoli and cheese tortellini, and the Parmesan was missing. I went through the box to make sure I hadn't missed anything. When I went to get the items for my dinner tonight, the sirloin for the garlic lime marinated steak was missing. So I have no steak for the dinner I was planning on this evening. The Parmesan I can overlook, but the steak I cannot. Can't make the dish without that. I was excited to try this service, as I have a friend that has said great things, but my experience has been completely disappointing to say the least.
Subject: First order. Cancel my account! Official notification.
Received the first shipment today. Eggplant is all scuffed up and brown on top, romaine has brown edges, thigh meat chicken is swimming in gross blood and by the way I eat chicken Breast.
Most importantly. The box was delivered in front of my house where anyone could have taken it. Your shipping directions said to open gate and leave at front door. Perhaps you can use Fed Ex. They put packages at the door. Your food is super expensive. Use a more reputable delivery method.
Weight of the box. Weighed 16 pounds AFTER I removed the perishables! Felt like 25 lbs when full. Too heavy for me.
Ravioli. I was expecting a Martha Stewart brand not some brand I can purchase at Walmart! Really you can do better than this!
I wish to cancel my account. Yes even prior to tasting anything. I would never buy lettuce with brown edges, scuffed eggplant. You forgot the radishes altogether. Nothing looks all that fresh and it all needs to be cooked right away!
P.S. I tried to call your *******513 number. Martha's outgoing recorded message
Told me there was no one there to take my call. If you plan to sell to PST, you should keep PST hours. It was bit after 6PM just after opening the package and it is dinner Time!
Attached is a photo of the shipping label and another one of the inside of the box with overkill on the ice packs.
First meal box was pretty good.
Second box missing snow peas that went in the fried rice, scallions were soggy and the ginger root has a brown spot all the way thru it.
Not worth the aggravation.
This is my 4th and last order. My first order was delivered to my apartment office and wasn't given notification o pick it up. My instructions were to leave at my door, as I am home during the day to put ingredients away. When I contacted Marley and Spoon they gave me a half credit for the box and said they would contact the delivery company. I was told because of how they package their meals it should still be fine as long as the meat is not warm to the touch, which it was. My second and third orders were delivered to my door but ingredients were not fresh, produce was wilted, meat seemed questionable. This last box, delivery date today, was also delivered to the office, which I won't be able to get until tomorrow because the office is closed again. So this box will have to go in the garbage again. I have asked for a full refund, I am waiting on an answer. I don't recommend this at all. The main reason for ordering is because the items come directly to you, convenience, and you can make a meal quickly, can't if it's not delivered to you. I don't know about you, but I am not going to eat anything that has been sitting in a box too long and when the produce looks bad can you trust it at all? No thanks!
Good food when you pick what you want.
Recipes good. BUT shipping sucks. Always a day to 2 days late and food can be spoiled.
Mine comes by FedEx. Ready to cancel.
I did cancel my subscription after giving my refund few minutes they again charge me of my payment. I did called them but they told they cant give me my refund! What a rip off!

ABSOLUTLEY HORRIBLE! If you are looking for a company that executes poor delivery, auto pay on your credit card (that never stops even after you request cancellation) and customer service filled with excuses this is the company for you! What a gimmick! I responded to a radio advertisement for Martha and Marley Spoon Advertising 3 free meals on your first order. Not only were my meals never credited, but delivery was off track, perishables left outside of my home at weird hours of the day (all day), my credit card being consistently charged over and over even after I requested an immediate cancellation and battling customer service rep's through a 3rd party affiliate located in UK. STAY FAR FAR AWAY! This "service" by far the worst and is awful.
Enclosed is the pictures of my box that I received today. The box was damaged on the outside and the inside was horrible. This is the 2nd time me box has been brought in a horrible condition
I recently cancelled my service due to spoilage in every shipment. I chose this service because I was tired of the lesser quality of ingredients provided by other services I had tried. I believed that Martha Stewart would not lend her name to a service that did not deliver superior products and service.
My belief is 1) Economy shipping lessens the quality of the perishables. 2) There is poor QA in packing the boxes. Many times, leafy greens, tomatoes etc. were packaged underneath potatoes and heavier items. 3) The cold temperature some produce is exposed to further assists in its early spoilage.
Personally, I have never tasted a bread product included (other than tortillas) as they all had mold on them.
I contacted customer service. Expressed my concerns about the spoilage, temperature possibly being an issue, and of how worse it might be in the winter with the extreme cold.
The response I received was 1) I should have contacted CS about the spoilage for credit (did I not just do that?), and 2) I should alter my meal plan to contain more pasta and non-perishable items.
I mean, that kind of sealed the deal... I chose one of the more expensive meal plans, and one I was completely happy with recipe wise, quality wise, instruction wise, etc. But hey, I should just go with the all carb option so there is no spoilage and Marley Spoon makes a huge profit?... No thanks. The problem is not on my end, it is with Marley Spoon not delivering.
**It was chilling to see so MANY reviews here by persons with the same issues! Lots of produce is susceptible to extreme cold... I think freshness is certainly an issue, but so is the packing method.
First order arrived 5. 20. 20. First, there were MISSING INGREDIENTS! Ordered three meails only received two. Missing was an entire steak meal. In addition, the two meals we did receive were both missing ingredients. In addition, we received the wrong recipe menu cards. Emailed the support team immediately after opening the box to report the missing items. As of today 5. 21. 20, have not recieved a response other than an auto email informing that my email was received. Second, POOR QUALITY! My husband tried the mozzarella cheese right out of the package and was unable to chew it. He compared it to chewing bubblegum (it never dissolved in his mouth). He than proceeded to melt it and it never fully melted. After one delivery, I have cancelled our subscription. SERIOUSLY DISSAPPOINTED! IT WAS HORRIBLE! Would not recommend! There are better subscription services (i. E. Sunbasket and Blue Apron). I tried Martha & Marley Spoon to add variety, but that was a mistake. Still waiting on a refund and/or minimum a response.
They canceled my account because they said I didn't qualify for voucher. They set up my account then canceled my order.

We used to subscribe to Marley Spoon when we lived in North Carolina but we moved to Colorado and had to stop it for a while. Once we got settled in our new state, we started the subscription again and it was a nightmare. First, the delivery date offered was a Wednesday which we didn't like but were willing to work with. Second, delivery was guaranteed by 9pm which of course was not satisfactory but we enjoyed it the first time around and was excited for it again. As we waited for our first shipment, come 9pm it never came. I called customer service and they said there was a problem with our credit card so the order wasn't processed. I asked why we weren't notified and they couldn't give us an answer. I don't know what was wrong with the CC as we use it everyday but we gave them a new CC for the file and anxiously await our second shipment. Guess what, it never showed either. Waited again until 9pm and called customer service. They said it was picked up by Fedex but for some reason they couldn't get the delivery made as expected. The food is time sensitive so of course it would have been spoiled if we had to wait another day. While I felt bad for the CS Rep, he was very understanding when I told him I had it with the poor service and had no choice but to cancel the service. I don't know what happened to Marley Spoon but I was extremely disappointed to have to cancel the subscription as we really like the quality of the food they provided. The other food services just didn't compare.
First month or so all was fine. An occasional missing item but I'm well provisioned here at home... then they moved my date 4 days... and box was charged, but never shipped or delivered (illegal). Took several days to get a response... no explanation, apology... following week (almost three weeks since last box received) THAT BOX CAME THREE DAYS late (from their already changed delivery date) w several missing ingredients,... but no head up it was delayed... next two boxes also arrived three days after their email confirmed... at some point they changed the cold pack delivery to "warm pack?" Using insulation instead of ice... or maybe had to do with the fact that food was sitting in someone's garage or car for days... food rotten, slimes, smelly. There will be lawsuits from hungry folks w no other options eating this food and getting very sick. Costumer service and communication non existent and only way to get compensation is to protest the charge w credit card... which is easy with their emails confirming the "due" date, a screen shot of actual delivery from shipper, and photos of gray warm meat, slimy rotten vegetables, crushed yogurts... no way to depict rancid smell or missing ingredients... but no necessary. Go right to charge company or you'll be offered "refunded $8.99 for shipping" as compensation for the loss of $96 worth of food... during times of food insecurity... meanwhile... they obviously (read other reviews) can't service current clients, but continually push the "send free box" promotion to exponentially keep trolling for even more clients... resulting in even less control over quality, shipping, communications... Go try blue apron... save yourself and your peace of mind
Everything came loose in the box what a mess. I have ordered in the past from others and thy pacakged according to meals. Will not e buying again
I gave two stars because when you actually receive your meals, most of the recipes are quite good and easy to follow. However, this is only when you receive your meals. I was a Marley Spoon customer for a little over two years. There were too many times where ingredients were missing from meals or when they forgot to pack an entire meal altogether. Sometimes a month would go by and there were no problems, but then you would get 4-5 weeks in a row where there was an issue with the order. But then several months ago, things got worse, and there were weeks where we didn't receive our order at all. The worst part was that Marley Spoon would never contact us to apologize and let us know our order wasn't coming. So either they had no idea we never received the order, which shows insufficient oversight of their orders, or they knew about it, but weren't considerate enough to just send a quick email letting us know. Either way, it reflects poorly on the company. We tried to hang on, and hope things would get better, but over the past two years, everything got worse. The meal delivery/reliability got worse, the customer service got worse, and even the quality of the ingredients also got worse in my opinion. What finally made us give up is that we have not received our order for the past 2 weeks without any email or other type of notification from Marley Spoon. You are welcome to take your chances, because many of the recipes are good, but for us, all of the other issues that go along with it just weren't worth it anymore. I'm sure there are other meal delivery services out there with similar quality recipes but are much more reliable and that actually seem to care about their customers.
I ordered not having been smart enough to research and read reviews. I've tried several home meal delivery kits and this by far the worst. First, you have to pay up front before the first delivery. If you want to cancel, too bad. Second, I requested delivery on a Tuesday. I came home from work on Monday night to find the box on my front porch! I have a reason for having requested Tuesday so this early delivery was not appreciated. Third, all items that need to be frozen or kept cold, regardless of what meal they belong to, are tossed into one bag, no separation. A bag of peas had split open and all of them were rolling around inside the large bag. The three meals are placed in brown bags and sealed with a huge sticker. Each bag basically has to be torn open. The meal cards were thrown in during the packing process, instead of after, so they were wedged between items and damaged. After tearing open the bags I had to go through all the items in the bag as well as through the random product stashed in the large bag to match ingredients against the cards. In addition to losing the peas, a carton of cherry tomatoes was missing from the box. I contacted customer service via email on 2/10 and got the robo response indicating it had been received. On 2/13 I had yet to hear back so emailed them again. It's 2/14 and I still have heard nothing. Aside from this, it's not as user friendly as other services. Two examples: a can of whole steamed tomatoes was included for the recipe. The instructions were to "use kitchen shears to cut tomatoes until finely chopped." Um, send a fresh tomato or a can of diced tomatoes. And wouldn't a knife be easier? Then for the same recipe a small block of Parmesan was sent with instructions to grate it. All other services send the cheese already grated. The meals were good but unremarkable. No problem with freshness. None of these things are a big deal to me in and of themselves, but all together in one shipment (the first shipment at that) makes for a really, really big desire to never use this service again. I have cancelled and would discourage others from trying it.
From missing ingredients to soggy vegetables. The company's mission statement is far from the service rendered!
Tip for consumers:
Don’t use you will save more money and time ensuring the freshness and quality going to the supermarket yourself!
