“I have used NetSpend for over 10 years and have had 0 problems!”

Laura S.
12/17/19

It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

“DO NOT USE NETSPEND!”

NetSpend is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Their customer service reps are a complete joke. DO NOT USE NETSPEND. If anyone has any negative social media links, please share with me so I can spread the word.

Netspend has kept my money by locking my card for months. They needed proof of identity. I sent that. They rejected the address info like three times. I used a letter from the IRS. They refused it. I sent a letter from Social Securty Administration, they rejected that. I sent a letter from the Department of Social Services. They rejected that. There is an intentional effort on the part of Netspend to keep some account holders money by the constant frustration of people who need the service the most but are less likely to sue because they are poor. I don't believe the amount of reviews i see that claim five stars. Not with all the complaints and lawsuits i see online. Here it is Christmas and i am being scammed by Netspend, a corporate bully. My name is Stephen Allred and i urge you to cancel your Netspend card. They take advantage of the poor. I swear to God almighty that this is a truthful statement

Someone gifted me a sum of money on a Netspend card for expenses I had. I warned them before about Netspend but they insisted. I put the card away but later decided to add the money to my bank account. I definitely know my passcode but Netspend kept declining access. I called the company and discovered they had my card blocked, but was taking money for their maintenance fees. I couldn't get my money but they can take it. I tried to get what was left at an ATM. Card declined again. I was finally able to access a very small amount. I guess Netspend will take the rest for their fees. At least I have pocket change. Crooks.

My MiL gave us a Netspend card a few years ago. I assumed it had a balance - as it was a Christmas gift. I called to activate it, and they wanted my name, address, phone # and email. I asked why - to verify me. Then they asked for my SSN. No, you are NOT getting my SSN for a freaking gift card. They said ok, the card is now frozen. If you don't provide SSN, we can't verify you. Fine I don't need the $50 in exchange for giving you access to my private data. Since when do I need to verify my ID for a fkn gift card?!

We are sorry to hear that.

Netspend offers reloadable, prepaid debit cards, not gift cards. This type of product is intended for individuals who wish to have access to an electronic form of payment, but would like an alternative to a traditional bank account. The original card package states “This is not a gift card” on the front of the package. However, we understand that all of the packaging might not have been gifted to you.

Like other financial companies that offer debit cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.

This means that we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information. Card activation and identity verification are required before you can use the Card Account.

To speak with us about the card you received, please email social@netspend.com.

Thank you,
Netspend

NETspend is appropriately named. They weave their lies into a thick Net that entraps you like a fly in a sticky spiderweb. NOTspend would be a better name. They will NOT release your money for you to spend until you have spent a minimum of 8 hours on hold, being transferred or redialing after they drop your call. They are a terrible company and should not be allowed to operate.

Hi,
Netspend will do everything and anything to stop you from activating your card. They will ask you for social security ID, driver license, US passport, utility bills, home information, everything you can think of. I am not sure what do they do with this information, using it to send us IRS FAKE calls? Open new accounts under our names? This company should not be allowed to operate in US.
Read their card package, it says they charge 8 DIFFERENT FEES.

On May 28th my card was stolen along with my phone which is how they got my pin numbers etc. My acct was taken for almost $19,000 dollars. I called when I first knew of my card being stolen and shut off the card and and started the dispute. Not only that I had another deposit go on my acct and I couldn't access that money. They said I could transfer funds that was a lie! They have cancelled my account and I can no longer have a NetSpend acct. The rep said to look for a check in the mail. First off this was not my fault but they are sure making it that way. When I got my unemployment back pay I was so thankful. Then to have it gone has been a nightmare. I am praying that I get these funds back. Please if anyone can help me I would be so thankful.

They are grimy and underhanded please dont trust them with your hard earned money. I regret depending on their card very much. I dont ever write reviews no matter how good or bad something is but this is just outrageous! They transfer you to more than 3 people then they hang up on you repeatedly and just plain treat you like crap. PLEASE USE ANY OTHER COMPANY BUT THIS ONE! NOT TRUSTWORTHY! I wish I could put a zero

They charge you for the card (4.95) they charge you for reloading the card (4.95) They charge you for every transaction (1.00) they charge you to pull money out the ATM (2.00) They charge you for purchasing anything online (1.00) so basically Everytime you use the card they take your Money also! This was never informed to me. If your already using their services why take additional money off every time I use the card? I would rather have a bank account, or a green dot card. They both would save you way more money! Netspend is a scam & I wouldn't recommend & their customer service representative are very unprofessional, and confusing. I just told them to Shut my card off Immediately, I'd rather spend $25 to open up a ligit bank account, it's so worth it. Now you can actually save your money with NETSPEND taking anything from you... Thanks State Employees Credit Union

My only way to pay my rent is by my social security disability payments. They locked my account for fraud protection and I did everything they asked with sending my ID and SS card and proof of address and then they say it wasn't enough. It's been two months now and I asked to have my account closed and a check sent to address on file and yet to receive it and every time I call they say it takes 15 days and the day it was processed is a day later every time... They say the same exact thing as if they read it from a script. I couldn't pay my rent and ended up on the streets...

Worst company to have a pre-paid account with. We bought a card and were told it wasn't going to be active until we called to activate the card. We were told the money put on the card was going to be accessible, regardless of time before we activated it. I called to activate the card and there was a 0 balance. I was charged inactivity fees and I couldn't get any of the fees disputed. The representatives kept saying that the terms and conditions stated the fees so they were valid. Instead of understanding we were given incorrect information, they refused to work with me at all. This company will lie to you and then take your money. I hope you are okay with having your money stolen and dealing with dishonesty if you keep a netspend account. I will never recommend this company and I wish there was a legal way to hold them accountable for lying.

Do not use them at all

This company takes advantage of consumers by enticing them with the promise of a bank account or gift for their loved ones and then makes it basically impossible to activate the card. They ask for detailed information about the cardholder and at the end of the process they claim they cannot verify the information. It begins when you select the option to activate the card online, but wait, something went wrong-please call this number. After calling the number, which also happens to be the number they direct you to to file a complaint, you wait on hold for 45 minutes. When you are finally connected to a representative, that person cannot speak or understand english. They also appear to have problems hearing. They ask for all of the same information, making you repeat it several times. At the end of this ordeal, you are told that they cannot verify your information and you must submit some document…. I could not understand what she was saying. I asked multiple times for her to clarify and then she hung up on me.
