“I have used NetSpend for over 10 years and have had 0 problems!”

Laura S.

It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

NetSpend is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Their customer service reps are a complete joke. DO NOT USE NETSPEND. If anyone has any negative social media links, please share with me so I can spread the word.

Wish we would have checked first! Bought a 50 + prepaid card and couldn't activate. After continuously calling customer service we were told the store scanned it wrong that since was never registered the store owed our refund. After going back to the store and having the receipt showing did go through he we go back with customer service. We've been hung up on, put on hold and lied to over & over...they blame the store...even though we have the receipts.they keep telling us to have the store rescan it again. What a joke & if I were to rob someone I'd have to answer for it. Guess companies can do it a ok.so now I'm trying to find who I can file complaints with besides the Bbb etc & maybe one day get some of our money back...BUYER DEFINITELY BEWARE...I see my same story over & over up here so I know it's an everyday thing for this company.Robbing folks who struggle just to live anyway.I hope someone curses them or something...the ripple effect this one transaction caused is not even funny & nore do they care..

This company is built to defraud its customers. I mistakenly bought a "gift card" at Walmart last Christmas only to find that it required all kinds of verification before activation (they wanted a copy of my SS card?). After finally getting the card activated, I foolishly didn't try to use it for several months, in which time the balance was depleted by the high monthly fees. When I did try to use it, it was rejected because the intended purchase amount was higher than the balance "plus applicable fees". No idea what the amount of the fees are, but the purchase amount was below the balance (why are there fees to the user on a debit card anyway?). Then, the card was blocked for unspecified suspicious activity (I tried to log in to my account). After spending 45 minutes being passed around, I was told I needed a copy of my SS card, verification of address, and IRS verification. This is a joke, and I would laugh, except that they are preying on the weakest in the socio-economic chain. Even their customer service methods are designed for people to drop off calls. I am really surprised Walmart would do business with this company. I supposedly am going to get a check for the balance on the card in 7 business days (yeah, right).

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!

I've had this card for about 10 yrs maybe. I've never really had a problem until now. I tried called them on the weekend after message's kept coming to my phone of purchases that I didn't make. Almost 680.00 with their overdraft fees that were added. So, the next day I get a text message asking I made those purchases and I told them no and they locked that card and sent a new one while proceeding to tell me that I had to file a dispute in order to receive my funds back and that they would contact me via email (never did). I called them after no response and was told to give them to the 22nd of May but still no response so, I called them to see what was going on and that's when I received a text message saying that I was being refunded 0.00 which is a crock of bull if you ask me. So I don't trust you and I don't recommend this card to anyone it's just not trustworthy. They did refund what was supposed to be 234.00 but took 65.00 for overdraft fees that I didn't do but great job of scamming your loyal customers! Hats off to ya for that!

Netspend had Synina Rodriguez and Oscar Sotuyo who were Customer Experience Analysts. I provided them with documentation showing I was incarcerated, not in possession of the card and there was a restraining/ no contact order in effect with the ex girlfriend who used the card. We are not married, no joint bank accounts, she is not an authorized user on the account, and our relationship was ended the day I was arrested and the restraining/ no contact/ order of protection was put into effect and any previously rites, authorities, or agreements became null in void. As also stated in the police report. All privledges were revoked upon arrest and dissolution of the relationship. How can this not be automatic grounds for reimbursement. Also how could no fraud warnings or procedures be in place when multiple high value atm withdrawals are done in one day?! How can they have a woman call, have recordings of her voice! And allow her to order a new card to a different address then on file and send it?! This is ludicrous! And no provisional credit during the investigation? I'm a senior. Please help!

If I could give zero stars, I would. This is the worst absolutely worse prepaid credit card that you can use on the earth. They charge you for every transaction and if you go online to buy things, they will shut your credit card down and sometimes they won't even issue your money out at all after they shut your credit card down. They are always putting restrictions on the card if you buy things online and you cannot overcome that you have to call in and if you have more than three times that you bought things online they will suspend your card for ever they say they're going to send you your money but this is the second Netspend prepaid card. I've had the first one never sent me my money back. I'm praying that they will send me my money back this time because it's almost $400. That I put on there to buy my grandkids Christmas presents so it's totally ruining the Christmas season this year because I won't get the money back for 7 to 10 business days minus of course the holidays as well. Please do not buy this card. It is the worst ever.!

Tip for consumers:
They charge over $1.35 per transaction when it’s pre paid and that’s your cash you just put on the card that they are charging you for using the card and they shut your card down for internet purchases

When my son was 17 years old (two months ago) he was sold a net spend debit card by a company called Kum & Go a local gas station/convenience store. After my son paid 80 dollars in cash for the card, he tried to use it but it did not work. After calling Net Spend, he was informed that he needed to input his social security number to activate the card. He was also informed that he could not use his social security number because he was not 18 years of age. When he tried to return the card to Kum & Go, a seller of the Net Spend product, we was told that he could not and that he would have to get it sorted out with Net Spend. When he called Net Spend back to get a refund, they informed him that he needed to find someone over the age of 18 to activate the card for him. Now that he is 18 years of age, Net Spend will not activate the card without a copy of his drivers license and a copy of his social security card. This is how I came to find out about the situate since my son does not have access to his social security card. This debit card should never have been sold to a minor! How can you get away with selling something to some that they cannot use and then not let them return it for a refund?

Tip for consumers:
When you sell a product to someone and then not let them use it you should at lease give them their money back. That's not what happened

I was on the phone for 1 hr and 45 minutes trying to activate this. Then they put a red flag on my account to where I could not use it because I live in Canada. Pulled my personal info from credit files without my permission. All for a birthday gift sent to me from my parents. I ended up canceling. Then they wanted to send the funds on the account to said Canadian address that they had the issue with in the first place. Customer service are clueless. They won't answer questions that are asked. They read from A script. Give a runaround. Keep you on hold for hours. Refused to send me a confirmation of cancellation Email. They are janky at best. Then after talking to a rep. She put me on hold and bam, I'm back at the recorded menu for when you call in. So I then am talking to yet another rep. Requesting A confirmation email. Then he tells me that they are sending the check to my Mom's US address with my name on it. I just soent 45 min. Talking to the other rep to get that changed. What good will a check do her with my name on it? I don't care if they send it to me or her at this point. I just want to get her money back. I asked them to send it to her with her name on it. If they send it to me, put my name on it. How hard can it be?! Or better yet, credit the account back (you know… a true refund) back to the card it was purchased with. Waste of time. No resolution. I'm honestly angry beyond words.

We're sorry to hear about your experience. Netspend offers prepaid debit cards, not gift cards.

Like other financial companies that offer gift cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.

This means that we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information. Users are required to provide their permanent residential address in the US and our cards are only available in the US.

They are the worse company, i needed to transfer money from my savings account to my checking account I was aware of only 6 transfers being able to be done within the month but when i called last week 3/18/2020 they told me I had one more transfer available if i needed to transfer any additional money out (not informing me of the consequences). Today 3/23/2020 I called to transfer money because my account overdraft, I understood there was an overdraft fee after 24 hours if not depositing money into my checking but when Amy the girl i spoke to on the phone today actually explain to me the consequence of my 7th savings transfer I was very upset, furious and overwhelmed! (7th saving transfer follows with a cancellation on your saving account for a 90 day period). She had the audacity to tell me to go to a bank or a chain store! With the corona virus going on and many many places not opening she refused to help me further. I had no choice but to close my saving account due to the lack of information giving to me by one of their colleagues. I begged her to help me but she refused to look for any kind of alternatives. I explain to her this wasn't my fault this was the companies fault for not communicating well with their customer yet an apology wasn't even given to me all she said was for the future we will make sure to inform our colleagues as if the future would be any help to my now. It is unfair and ridiculous how customers need to suffer the consequences for the lack of professionalism and accuracy of information given to us by NET-SPEND!

I noticed a lot of charges on my card and call them right away. They started a dispute and said that they were unauthorized charges and gave me my money back. Then a few days later (on my birthday day) I get a letter in the mail saying that they took the $197 back out of my account because Google IMVU said that they were authorized. I contacted Google IMVU and they said that they were unauthorized charges and that they close down the account. They also sent me an email verifying this information. I called NetSpend back and asked why if it says that it wasn't authorized then why am I not getting my money back and they said there's nothing we can do that they were authorized charges. They end up sending me these big stack of papers that just shows receipts for things that I did not order. I am now stuck with $197 gone out of my account and they told me that all I can do is get a hold of Google IMVU to get the money back. How can I get the money back from Google IMVU when they're saying that the charges were unauthorized and they already gave the money back. I really liked this company at 1st and I made the awful mistake of trusting them with my son school clothes money. It might not seem like a lot of money to somebody else but to me it is. So please do not trust them with your money.

I personally really enjoy having netspend. I have had several times where my account has been hacked. Netspend has made it right every single time. I would not have known right away if it weren't for them flagging my account. They really do pay attention to what is right on my account and what is not. They have always reimbursed me when my account has been hacked. Just today I had a company charge me the same thing twice. That company stated they could only see the one transaction. They asked for my bank to be on the line to verify. I got Netspend on the line and they verified that there were 2 of the same transaction. Netspend declined the 2nd transaction and refunded my money back immediately. I love that you get paid before the actual pay date. I don't like the fee for the ATM, as the ATM's charge a fee and then Netspend charges a fee. I love how even transactions that are pending have already come out of the available balance immediately. I have overdrawn several banks for this alone. All in all, I've had Netspend for 5 years and I don't plan on leaving them anytime soon!

I received a Netspend debit card from the Red Cross as a conciliation for them not having gas cards. I had evacuated Louisiana prior to Hurricane Ida and was now making my way back home. I made an account on Netspend's website the night before I planned to leave and drive home; entered my SSN, address, and other identifying info/checks that credit bureaus make you enter. The next day I went to fill my gas tank, entered the pin I had created... and the card was declined. I went inside to try again; card was declined. Ended up using my credit card that's already inundated with hotel charges from my evacuation.

I went online to try to log in and see what happened: Account Locked. Today, I finally called to ask how to unlock my account. Was told that I needed to submit pictures via email of: my government issued ID, SS Card(?), and a utility bill with my current address. In the words of the customer service rep, "because the US Patriot Act" allows them to request these things.

What was the point in me creating an account with my address, SSN, I think it even asked for my license number? Create a pin? And at the first use, decline the card when I absolutely needed it. Now I'm made to jump through hoops when I'm already overwhelmed with other Hurricane Ida-related problems. I really don't want and trust to send these people my ID documents.

If you ever have the choice, DO NOT PUT MONEY ON AND/OR GIVE SOMEONE A NETSPEND CARD. The fees alone are highway robbery.

Would like to suggest, for everybody to NOT use NETSPEND! If possible... they pissed me off, BIG TIME!

***** I will NEVER use NetSpend! I loaded $200, on a PREPAID, PayPal debit card... and they won't let me register it, because apparently I am dead... I contacted the social security office, and sent EVERYTHING they asked for, just for them to tell me, I'm still dead! Now I gotta wait 10, days to receive a check! And tomorrow, I'm calling PayPal... and telling them to cancel my PayPal, too! I AM DONE!

Letter sent to them, after they emailed me, saying they won't do anything for me, but send a paper check, as a refund! I was using it to pay a bill, that was due 11/23... so I'm sure there will be extra charges, on top of that now, too...

****They are sending a refund check to this "so called" deceased person, (who the social security office says is alive), that PUT $200 on a prepaid debit card, and expect this same deceased person, to cash a check?

Makes no sense, to this deceased person!

And told this deceased person, that they cannot use NetSpend! Trust me, you don't have to worry about that! This deceased person, will let her family and friends know, what a joke you guys are, and will make sure EVERYONE knows, to NEVER use NetSpend, again!

This is the worst experience I have EVER had in my 52 years of LIFE! And you could believe, I will write a review, EVERYWHERE I CAN!

I was given a netspend debit card as a bday gift. When I tried to activate the card, it said it could not activate and call customer service. The agent, David, said the card had expired and the only way to get my money was they would send me a check. I gave him my name and address. I did research online and discovered how disreputable the company was and that they would assess and deduct fees from my check. David NEVER mentioned any fees would be deducted. I called back customer service to ask if fees were going to be deducted since David failed to mention it and this agent, whose name was Carmel, said I would not receive ANY check because my "account" had been charged maintenance fees and there was nothing left. I said this was impossible because I did not have an "account," rather I was given the debit card as a bday gift. I also told her David said NOTHING about deductions or account fees, but said I would receive a check in the mail for the full amount of the gift card. I asked to speak with a supervisor. I am still waiting on hold, even though Carmel said she was transferring me to an available supervisor, and no one has picked up. It has been over hour. THIS IS A TOTAL SCAM! No one is answering. And now it is saying the number on my card is invalid. FRAUD, SCAM, immoral thieves. Disgusted

Hello,

We're sorry to hear that. Netspend offers prepaid debit cards, not gift cards. The fees for using the card and for maintaining the Card Account, including maintenance fees, are fully disclosed in the Cardholder Agreement that was included in the card packaging. The fee is automatically charged after 90 consecutive days of no activity. The purchaser of the card might not have realized that we only offer debit cards.

We'd like to speak with you to see what we can do. Please email us at social@netspend.com.

I have been a NetSpend customer for about 5 plus years sadly due to the decline in American standards of business practices and out sourcing to foreign countries I will never in life recommend NetSpend to anyone I know even if they were to pay me. It started when I asked to dispute a transaction. Then from there they deactivated my card without my permission which still has money or it 5 dollars no big deal. Also I just used my card that day the automated service told me I hadn't used the card in 365 days which I had used it that day. I tried to have it cancelled which the foreign entity told me I have to be transferred to another useless foreign entity to cancel guess what I'm cutting the card up and discontinuing its use and im going to get a american bank account. My advice to anyone that has this service dump it asap. Maybe one day when they get American entities to start handling their business matters I might change my mind until then their services are trash and worthless and useless great job NetSpend by the way I only gave it one star because I had to pick something the rating I really wanted to give would have been 1/4 of star

...
I haveNet Spend, opened it a couple months ago and get my direct deposit on it. I made a purchase through another company didn't feel comfortable about the purchase so I wanted to wipe out card and get a new one. Net spend said they had put a block on it, until the new card came in. I asked the customer service representative if you could get a temporary card until the new one came in. Her reply was I need to purchase one. So I purchased a card called customer service and they saidI need verify the account I would have to answer some social security questions. The question were pertaining to street addresses that I had no idea what they were. They said I didn't answer the questions correctly. To me the addresses have nothing to do with social security. I spoke to a supervisor and I was agitated and then they told me they would have the fraud department contact me in 24 hours. I then called social security and asked if they ask about addresses and they said they don't. They said I was a victim of a possible scam and fraud. I also went to consumer affairs website and there are several complaints about asking no pertaining questions on account. Net spend refuses to release my money until I verify their questions. Another representative told me that fraud department would call me back in 2-3 day and whoever told me 24 hours was misinformed. I feel like I am a victim of fraud.

I once bought a Visa Netspend Card because my store didn't have any visa gift cards or google play. BUT WHEN I GOT THE CARD, I GOT DECLINED! I PAID $33 DOLLARDS FOR A $30 GIFT CARD, THE COUSTOMER SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE, AND I NEVER GOT MY MONEY BACK

We are sorry to hear that. Netspend offers, prepaid debit cards, not gift cards.
