“I have used NetSpend for over 10 years and have had 0 problems!”

Laura S.
12/17/19

It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

“DO NOT USE NETSPEND!”

NetSpend is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Their customer service reps are a complete joke. DO NOT USE NETSPEND. If anyone has any negative social media links, please share with me so I can spread the word.

I've been a netspend customer for several years, and more than once they canceled my card for no reason that they could provide evidence for, and they locked me out of my account saying that there was suspicious activity, without giving me any details. They wanted copies of my passport, my social security card and other sensitive information with my mailing address on it. I was always polite and patient with them, even though I knew that they were just reading from a script. Finally, they closed my account with over $1000 in it and I cannot get a straight answer about how to get my money back. Needless to say, despite the fact that they have been sued again and again, and despite the fact that they are being investigated by the FTC, they continue with sneaky tricks and woefully bad customer service. If you need a mobile banking or online banking service, please don't use Netspend.

Tip for consumers:
Don't use this service. They engage in shady practices and they will steal your money.

Products used:
It's a bank-like organizarion called Metabank, but I don't think that they are beholden to the same laws as a real bank. I used to use them to get my tax refunds direct deposited.

Netspend sucks! Customer service is horrible, I called them three different times and received different information each time. I asked to speak with a supervisor and was placed on hold for 45 minutes. I called back and spoke with another sup name Rio and he was so rude. Never again. Lessons learn!

Ive used this company for years as my main card. My unemployment and stimulus are both due to be deposited in a matter of days and guess what!? They closed my account for no reason! Im so upset. I filed with the BBB, my attorney is involved, ive filed a police report and contacted the attorney General. Stealing from people that the government are trying to help, you should be ashamed! Ive also contacted the news stations since im associated with them and they are sickened by all the negative reviews and are willing to do a story if this is not rectified asap. This has to stop.

Your money and personal information is not protected with Netspend. Money was stolen from my HEB debit card in the amount of $572.84 by someone out of the country. Netspend is refusing to refund this money until an investigation which could take up to 45 days. During the email exchange with Netspend they sent me another customer's personal information and card account! Do not trust this company!

I tried to activate a prepaid card... thats a card that I already PAID FOR! They told me I had to send them many different forms of personal information... including a copy of my driver's license. All for a 25 dollar prepaid card that I wanted to give as a Christmas gift. How they get away with scam is beyond me. Do not let these criminals scam you!

Tip for consumers:
Don't ever buy a netspend card of any type.

We're sorry to hear that. We offer prepaid debit cards, not gift cards.

Like other financial companies that offer debit cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.

This means that we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information. Card activation and identity verification are required before you can use the Card Account. I filed my 2020 taxes last year just now bout to get them just to go on my account to see that my routing number has completely changed & they added 7000 in front of my account number now making it impossible for me to receive my taxes through my direct deposit. Call customer service just for them to tell me I put the wrong info in so glad I screenshot my info. To messy I will never use netspend again & advise others not to use them as well! Straight Garbage! The real Rating No star at all!

I've had Netspend over 5-6 years. Currently... have over 7-9 cards sitting in my dresser. Due to "holds" or "sorry errors" on netspend's end. I've called back multiples times with communication failure between reps. Had "expedited cards" sent out to me for 3-5 business days, which came in the original 7 days. I use netspend to deposit my checks from work. I thought for the convenience of getting paid earlier and less hassle (as advertised). It seems the aggravation of miscommunication and holds being placed for a $36 charge at 7 am is not worth it at all. When in all seriousness I gas up over $40 on a regular. I'm not sure what the error true was behind that hold. I was told another card would again be "expedited" out to me, so I can add this to the collection of wonderful errors I already have. Guess it's my fault for not baking wisely. OoO

I purchased a card for my nephew who is 15 and he registered the card and then when they asked for his ss number he stopped! So I gave him cash and took the card back and have not been able to activate this card and been on the phone for 3 days trying to get someone to help and it's just a vicious cycle! They hung up on you and transfer you back to the first person... never ever will I purchase one of these NETSPEND Cards again! Reporting as Fraudulent!

I cant believe what had haope to me by not spend. They sent 4 primary cards to other addresses and states. I've called a dozen times and told them to terminate my information. Since then they have gave my personal information to other businesses. I can only imagine my social security number 2as apart of that information. This business should be shut down as soon as possible! Do your research before doing anything. Definitely stay far away from here!

If you want your money like Netspend advertises "up to 2 days early" you might as well forget it. One week I get paid on Thursday, next on a Friday. This card is inconsistent with deposits. Some weeks I get paid even later than any of my coworkers. Just don't expect early payday with hassel free banking because it isn't going to happen.

Tip for consumers:
Just do not depend on timely deposits or easy customer service.

I admitted that I was the one that used my card for a transaction that I found was a bad deal. So NetSpend went ahead and blocked my card. The money on it is to pay my bills which I can't now. I asked the man to expedite my new card and he said that it will cost me $25 and then he tells me that he can't expedite my new card to my p.o.box. That is a bunch of crock

I was visiting family and went into Giant food store asking for gift cards, they sold me NetSpend and the children that I gave these to came back to me saying they couldn't use them to buy their gift so I took them back and they would not give me a refund for the cards, I now have 3 $25.00 cards that I cannot even merge as they say I can using flash pay id. I've just wasted a whole day trying to figure out how to use this as online they don't do split payments at most websites and NetSpend support is next to worthless as it seems there is also a usage charge so the $25 cards are worth $23.50 each after their usage fee of $1.50. I will make sure that this information is spread throughout my area and to all my social media contacts before someone else gets stuck like myself.

I got this as a Christmas present with $100 on it. I activated it. They ask for WAY too much personal information which was weird. My Netspend card was declined at multiple locations on a road trip. I called the phone number on the back of the card which told me me account balance was $0. I spent 15 minutes on their phone system pressing every button to try to get a live person to explain what happened to my money. No live person was an option. I thought I was an isolated case till I read these stories here.
Geez... Do you see a trend? Stay far away.

If you value ur money don't use net spend. They are liars crooks and thieves. I had fraud on my account where my card was stolen, and used in one state, while I am in a whole different state on the other side of the US. It's physically impossible for me being in two different states at the same time. If I could give them no stars, but it doesn't give that option. Netspend is the biggest joke and thieves out of any prepaid service around. Do not use or get netspend for ur sake, especially if u value ur hard earned money. Cause if u have fraud, u will never see ur hard earned money ever again. Netspend is just as bad as the thieves that stole my card. I will also be contacting BBB, which has more complaints filed against netspend then any other prepaid card services in history.

This company sucks. I have been trying to contact a live representative for days now and I only get one prompt when I call and it asks me for the card number and the PIN. When I enter this information it says that my pin is not correct. I know for a fact that my pin is correct and I'm starting to get really pissed off now. Instead of resolving this quickly, I had to text help in order for someone to respond. They responded by giving me an email address. I don't want to text them, I don't want to email them I just want to speak to a live human being and stop getting the runaround. Basically the money I put on the card is useless. I will never ever again in my life purchase a card from NetSpend. If you're looking to speak with someone, good luck because I've been trying for days. I do not recommend NetSpend to anyone unless they want to lose their money and get screwed

I found a prepaid debit card in my 15 year old's room. First the store never should have sold to him because he was underage but that is a different battle.

Tried to get balance online and of course couldn't. Called the *******363 on the back and got 2 different people who could not and would not give me the balance because I couldn't provide them with a social security number and told me my 15 year old son would have to call them back. He doesn't know his SS# and I told them that. All I wanted to know is what the balance is on the card. I asked to be escalated and talked with someone different who asked me about 10 different questions and still said she couldn't give me the info. Such BS.

My debit card was compromised and my bank account was hacked. And they stole about $900 for my account. Netspend is making me wait 10 business days to investigate before I can get my money back. They do not care that. I have bills to pay and I am now having to pay late fees and my credit is screwed Now because I can't pay my credit card bills. Until netspend decides to give me my money back. Once I get my money back. I will be closing my account with this company. They do not care the people that stole my money got off easy while I'm stuck here stressed the hell out. I have been with them for almost 15 years I believe. I will never recommend them ever again.

department stating someone order another card
and they will block it. They attached this card to my account and someone was able to take out 303.00. You can call the non English speaker don't understand. Have no numbers to fraud department or headquarters. Get rid of this CARD! Try Chime Card.

Amazingly my account is overdrawn almost 500.00. A merchant swiped my card that came up declined. I then paid with cash but it was pending on my account for 8 days. I then called customer service and the charge was reversed. Now somehow I'm overdrawn. I have no idea how that was even allowed when the charge was reversed after being told from the merchant it didn't go through. Now I have no money and what's in my savings, I have no access to. Unbelievable. I normally enjoy my NetSpend but this is one of many reasons why I have to let them go. Fix it NetSpend. My regular account doesn't even overdraw for a figure that high.

What a scam this company is. I received a card a gift that looks like a visa debit. Apparently, you have so many many days to set up an account with them or the card expires, even though the card says it is good through 9/22 They were 'gracious' enough to offer to send me a new card with no balance. LOL. This company is a SCAM and I am going to report them to whomever regulates them.

Bought a netspend at Walgreens. It was very difficult to activate and they asked many personal questions including your personal social security number. I stopped when it got to the social security number as this is very risky. They put me on hold and said, someone would be right with me. After 15 minutes no one came and I hung up. I got a charge on my phone bill for the 15 minutes. This is a sham operation!
