“I have used NetSpend for over 10 years and have had 0 problems!”

Laura S.
12/17/19

It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

“DO NOT USE NETSPEND!”

Stephanie O.

NetSpend is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Their customer service reps are a complete joke. DO NOT USE NETSPEND. If anyone has any negative social media links, please share with me so I can spread the word.

Went into the Walmart and purchased a $200 NetSpend debit card I was going to let a friend use it to help pay their electric bill. Tried to get it activated and my information wasn't in their database I social security number my address my phone number after I gave him my email address and finally got a hold of somebody to talk to they told me that they needed to get a copy of my driver's license a copy of my social security card a copy of a recent bill from my house like an electric bill that has the address on it and then they would activate the card for me or I can wait 10 days and they'll send me out of check in the mail there is no quick go buy a $200 gift card and just go use it they're a bunch of crooks I don't understand it I'm a truck driver with a hazmat endorsement a TWIC card and been through all kinds of background checks for guns and I think the liberals have one on us with it this debit card background checks that they have never again do not deal with NetSpend

I'm currently on hold with NetSpend this is my seventh time calling I've been on hold for 1:20. The last six times that I called they told me they are sending my refund of $50. To get to their customer service representative I have to use a different card than the one I am trying to get refunded for because my social security number and the specific card number keeps me in a loop of the main menu, or it has me enter it and nothing but silence follows.
So since I am just listening to my own music and still on hold I figured google review. This card was purchased by someone who didn't know netspend is a joke. I was asked to set it up for them not knowing netspend has a problem from another account I don't know about. My husband also bought one of these card and the same thing happened they say they need more information and you can't use the card until you get the hold of them. EVERYTIME THEY SAID THEY WHERE SENDING THE $50. I got my husband money back at the same time I originally called about this. They said they were sending one came but still waiting on the 50. I dont know what to do. Class action lawsuit? What's really crazy is $8.95 buy The Card. Also on 895 maintenance fee. When I had one of these cards I didn't even use the thing that's why I don't understand how I can have bad debt with them. Unless the 895 maintenance fee for a card I never even used and the same with the two cards on talking about we're never used. People have lives they should pay me for my time being on hold. I am at an hour and 49 minutes so far. And they said we're going to get you to the supervisor that I asked for and then this will happen nothing but silence. They should refund the $8.95 for the card on top of the $50 I say zero Stars but it made me put one

TERRIBLE, AWFUL and HORRIBLE! I will never, never, NEVER purchase a Netspend anything card again! EVER! 4 days ago I purchase a Netspend card and loaded $160.00 on it. I was unable to activate the card and upon calling customer service I was informed that they were unable to activate the card due to a negative balance on a previous card from 2016. First of all, I don't even know how you get a negative balance on a card that is PREPAID to begin with. So I paid the negative balance of $46.13 as instructed & told that they would the activate the new card and I could access the $160.00 that I'd loaded on the card. After 4 days, numerous phone calls and talking to too many people to count, the only thing I've accomplished is repeatedly being told that they will contact the billing department by email to lift the restrictions of my card. The customer service team is very rude and unhelpful, I was actually told to twiddle my thumbs until the restriction was lifted! I've been told the money will be accessible in 24 hours for literally 4 days now! I will NEVER waste my time or money with Netspend again & advise anyone to use ANY other company than Netspend because they're HORRIBLE all the way around!

I purchased a $500. Netspend in Texas in March 2020, in Texas when Covid hit, as emergency funds for my return trip to Canada. I did not need to use the card. Today I tried to activate the card and was unable to do so. I called the number provided and was told I needed to send a copy of my Social Security card and a recent invoice for my home. I do not have a Social Security number as I am a Canadian citizen. I also tried to change my address to my Canadian home. The clerk was unable to input that in to their system as we do not use zip codes in Canada. We use a 6 charcter alpha/numeric postal code.
I asked for a supervisor and waited 32 minutes before I hung up in digust.

When I called back and went through all the same BS, I asked to close the account and send me a check for the balance of $500.00. They would only send the check to the old address in Texas where I have not been in 31 months.

They would not even record my Canadian address. Having read the 672 complaints filed against this company, I feel I have been scammed out of my money.

I strongly suggest everyone avoid these thieves - Just read the complaints at

https://www.complaintsboard.com/netspend-the-companies-practices-and-hidden-charges.

Note... I am out $500.00

Well, to start off, I received a debit card from them in the mail in the same week that my tax return was supposed to come in. I google'd why I might be receiving a NetSpend debit card in the mail if I never signed up for one, and how quaint that the *TOP* (paid) answer is that the IRS will issue NetSpend cards if your bank account is not on file. This seemed plausible, as I was filing in a new state.

Well, stupidly of me I activated the card and was disappointed to find a balance of $0 - no tax return. Further, I received a letter regarding my tax return the next day, and NetSpend had nothing to do with it. Simply a marketing scam from a malicious marketing campaign.

Not terrible, not great - I just won't use it. Well, in the past week that I've had this card, I've had about a dozen marketing (spam) emails from NetSpend, regarding "PLEASE SET UP DIRECT DEPOSIT WITH US! :)" - after the first two, I clicked on the "unsubscribe" button to stop receiving their marketing (spam) emails. Well, the emails still keep coming. I've unsubscribed from their marketing list 3 times, and still I'm receiving multiple emails a day.

Any bank that's BEGGING you to put money into the account that you never signed up for, and will disregard your marketing preferences, is probably one that belongs 6 feet under.

Don't.

So I moved purchased new home and didn't update address on Netspend (been at new home 4 months) and I had some suspcicous activity on account. I was rudely called and told My account will be blocked until I can verify identity. So not fully unpacked I can't find my ssn card cause now they want a copy of that and my i.d along with address. I can't access account to update now a needed address. So waiting until new social card comes and figuring out how to get past with the ID and social. I'm hearing they are requesting to much from me and my next option is filing complaint with FTC, I reached out to president of Netspend thru email with no luck or customer service however I have many way of verifying who I am like a new ID card and verbally giving my ssn. I wasn't offered a new card or anything to be easier on me. I work a job and even sent them my w2 for the deposits I received from my employment. The date the suspicious activity took place I received a number from Netspend agent at *******477confirming tractions on my account than the 1-800 number yawl be aware of scams from even our own debit banking my employer, the IRS and Netspend has access to my accounts. They knew my transactions and information only customer service knows without me confirming much but charges. I am gratful the account was blocked but now I have to find elsewhere for work checks to be deposited on until matter gets settled but whole refund check and partial work check blocked..

Tip for consumers:
As a years plus customer I would say choose elswhere to bank where their are more security measures. Banking made easy and reliable and trustful. They will make you feel valued up until you have a problem and make you feel like your stealing from yourself.

I am a longtime customer of Netspend. But this week the day before my direct deposit, someone was able to charge 178.00 in fuel at a 7-11 in 2 separate charges WITHOUT MY CARD BEING PRESENT. I only had 56.00 in my account. After 40.00 in overdraft fees my account was 152.00 overdrawn. In the middle of a pandemic. I called customer service and explained the issue. I was told that they would dispute the charges as soon as it actually posted to my account, at this point it was authorization like when you use your card at the pump. I explained that I had my card and it had not been used in another town and certainly not for 178.00 in gas. My car holds 15.00 tops. Then the CSR tells me that it will take 45 - 90 to get the dispute settled and if it was in my favor the 56.00 would be credited. What does that mean? 3 months? I need my money now. And if I hadn't been able to stop my direct deposit I would be out 178.00 plus the 40.00 in fees that they would perhaps keep permanently. It has been such a hassle getting a paper check and having to go out to cash it. I buy groceries online for delivery so I don't get sick. I explained all this in numerous phone calls. I have the all access card that states 0 liability. The charge should have never been authorized without the card being present in the first place. Apparently the 0 liability is a myth. Don't fall for it like I did. I am thankful they were only able to steal 56.00 from me. Netspend has a fee for everything. They fee you to death but it's such a hassle to change over all my ACH payments I was willing to pay them. Until they suddenly became shady. Beware of losing your money to this company.

Tip for consumers:
Watch your balance. Be prepared for them to put a fraud block on your account for no reason and allow charges that should be declined for fraud.

******UPDATE*******
I spoke with a very nice customer service rep that refunded me my money in full. He explained to me the process on fraudulent charges and stated that Netspend was working upgrades for the card in the near future to help with security issues. I was surprised and thankful that they called me so quickly (less than an hour) after posting my review. I was not expecting that at all. I am happy they rectified the situation because I really needed my money.
On the 2nd of June I checked my account to pay some bills and noticed a charge of $360.88 that I did not make on my card to Ethiopian Airlines. I called Netspend immediately and was told I had to wait until the charge went through to file a dispute but in the meantime I could purchase another card and move $250 per day until I got my money out, activate my new card and if it was still pending after 10 days to call back and they would release my funds. I waited 11 days to call them and when I called she said that there was nothing she could do and that the company that processed the charge would have to do something about and I should try to call them. How can I call them with no verifying information?! I did not charge anything to Ethiopian Airlines and don't ever plan on it. The fact that you call yourself a bank and hold on to peoples money is insane! I have been waiting for 20 days and the charge is still pending in my account, how? It is very sad after reading these reviews that a company would actually do this to hard working people! I am pissed, I needed my money and it caused me to be late on a couple bills while I am already struggling and no cares!
