“I have used NetSpend for over 10 years and have had 0 problems!”

Laura S.
12/17/19

It is worth paying a $5.00 monthly fee to NetSpend because I get unlimited transactions and I get paid direct deposit money sooner than anyone I work with. NetSpend also gives me free text alerts describing each transaction made so I never have to wonder what my balance is. NetSpend is a trustworthy prepaid card. They will even cover me if I overdraw up to 10 bucks since I have direct deposit. Just read their policies; very simple to understand, choose your plan and you won't be disappointed.

“DO NOT USE NETSPEND!”

NetSpend is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Their customer service reps are a complete joke. DO NOT USE NETSPEND. If anyone has any negative social media links, please share with me so I can spread the word.

Netspend contacted me to ask if a charge on my card was fraudulent. Great right? Until they closed my account the day before my direct deposit was supposed to be deposited. Leaving me with NO access to my money until they could send me another card in 3-4 days. Then put me through the wringer with several security questions and public record questions. Long story short, still waiting for my new card and no access to my money.

I bought my daughter a card and put a $150 on it. She tried to use it and it declined. She emailed the company and they said that there are restrictions on the account and you can't resolve it through email. So she called. They hung up on her. How do you get something resolved when you can't make contact.? So very frustrating. So very sorry I spent $150 on this card. I bought another one for my other daughter and hers declined as well. So now I am out $300 because there is no way to resolve issues. This is theft.

I had a deposit that was sent under my business name to my Netspend account. I called to get the money sent back to the sender and the customer service did not get my name right and I gave home my card number (8) times and he still got it wrong. He did not speak English properly and would not put a supervisor on the phone, in the end he hung up on me. Now they still have not sent the money back and it payroll money and they went from a (2) day turn around to (6) days! Now I'm still on hold cause this customer service person just has me on hold when I asked for a supervisor and it's been a hour. I think they are very unprofessional and I will not trust them anymore with my money. They have customer service people work from an other country that can't speak English and properly stealing your personal information for all we know!

Don't use them! Don't use them! Don't use them!

Still on holed!

I get the temporary card from a local grocery store, put 30 bucks on it and activate it. They send a "permanent" card to replace the temporary one. Yet they dont transfer the money over. I have to call in to do it and they charge $4.95 to transfer the money. Not to mention the initial $5.95 fee just to have the account. There is also a ton of other fees for transactions and inactivity.
There are many better options out there, please check reviews before you make the same mistake I did.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your Netspend services.

A permanent card will be sent out once a temporary card is activated but both cards are linked to the same account and should not require a funds transfer.

We are happy to look into this issue for you. Please email social@netspend.com for assistance.

Thank you,

This is a scam in broad daylight. They market these cards as gift cards in stores, but they tack on fees for every transaction and even charge for inactivity. It's a complete rip-off.

Submitted a claim in May 7,2021 with 33 unauthorized transactions that exceeded $750. Netspend only has provided a "provisional" credit for 13 of these transactions that occurred within a 3-day window by the same company. They are niw telling me the claim won't be settled or complete their "investigation" until August 2021. They won't provide me with any written narrative of what they are doing and why. Written detailed info was submitted with each transaction amount & date.

This place is a rip off. They charge you for EVERYTHING! It charges fees for everything. I tried to close my account and have my money returned to me and that didn't happen. When I went to check my balance I had a ZERO BALANCE, and was told it was taken for account maintenance! What the hell! This place is so ridiculous. And just try to get someone on the phone who speaks fluent English! Run from this rip off company! It's funny I was never charged a maintenance fee as long as I was using this stupid card! It doesn't deserve any stars at all!

Received a card as a gift, which I assumed was like an ordinary giftcard. Set it aside and forgot about it until I discovered it ~1yr later. The card was never activated. I tried to activate it, but was not allowed to due to the time even though the card itself said it was still valid (according to "Valid Thru" date). Ok, so they ship me another. It arrive, I activate it, and find they've been charging me $6/mo every month! Apparently there is a hidden inactivity fee if not used within 90 days... and that timer starts from the moment someone put money on it.

I called to inquire about this and explained how the card wasn't even activated. After 20 minutes on the phone with them and essentially being repeatedly told "it is what it is", eventually they offered to give credit me back 3 of the 13 charges. Better than nothing, but they basically stole $60.

If you get or have this card, you MUST use it right away or suffer the hidden consequences.

Tip for consumers:

We're sorry to hear that.

We offer prepaid debit cards, not gift cards. The fees for using the card and for maintaining the Card Account, including maintenance fees, are fully disclosed in the Cardholder Agreement that is included in the card packaging. The fee is automatically charged after 90 consecutive days of no activity.

Basically just a massive hassle and scam. I got the card to use while traveling through the USA. Although I am a citizen of the USA I am not a resident as I reside abroad. After verifying my ID I deposited $300 on the account. Thankfully, I didn't do more. Then after 1 day they blocked the account because I had no proof of address. Then they treated me like a bum and a criminal. Sick of people discriminating against trans people like this so called bank. Protect transients everywhere!

I bought 2 cards as Christmas gifts and tried to activate for a senior citizen relative. Unfortunately, I waited too long and was told the cards had expired. I have now spent 2 hours on 2 sessions with their customer service trying to either reactivate the cards or get a refund. Each time their service person had to "escalate" the call to get approval to assist me. The 1st time, after 30 minutes of discussion, I was put on hold for 20 minutes and then my call was dropped. The latest service person, Anton, requested all my relatives info including her social security number so that they could issue the card. I gave him the info, even though I will be recharging the balance. After an hour or so, I was put on hold and left for 30 minutes which is when I hung up.

I STRONGLY advise against working with NetSpend

Bought a card this morning. Thank God I only loaded it with $25. More trouble than it's worth. Been trying to activate it for the last 3 hours. On and off the phone with customer service. They barely speak English so good luck trying to understand them. I finally get the card activated through the online website and 2 minutes later I get an email saying the account has been locked and to call customer service. Called twice and was supposed to receive an email to reset the account. Never got the emails. BTW, the card won't work if the account is locked. I'll chalk it up to a loss and a lesson learned. They got me for $25. Hope they enjoy it.

I used netspend a couple years ago. Any money you deposit with them you have no way of knowing if it actually went into your account. Then once it's in your account they make you wait days or weeks until you can actually use it. Thank goodness I only deposited $60 into the netspend account. I never got to use the card anyways because of this. I would recommend you put your money in a bank account and not into Netspend!

Somebody was stealing my money over time off my NetSpend card. Only when they start making big purchases for almost $100 that it started to be noticeable. Contact NetSpend they told me that they could not find no fraudulent claim. Because my card was charged over long period of time. Mind you without me knowing. To me they didn't care cuz they were receiving a portion of that money

Received one as a Christmas gift. Couldn't ever seem to get the card to work. After several tries i finally called and was told i was being charged $1.50 per attempt even if the transaction didn't go through. When i asked for a manager i was put on hold for 30 minutes and counting. Awful customer service and would never buy one of these! Not sure if i'll ever get my $50.

I received the NetSpend card as a gift. What a joke. Attempting to activate this card online did not work. Tried using the 866 number. When I finally got to speak to a human, I was disconnected twice, on the third try, i was told i would have to SEND IN a photocopy of my driver's license or a utility bill AND a photocopy of my social security card before the card could be activated. Needless to say, this was a waste of time and money.

Like other financial companies that offer debit cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.

This means that we will ask for your name, address, date of birth, and your government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see your driver’s license or other identifying information. Card activation and identity verification are required before you can use the Card Account.

We're sorry to hear that you are having issues with the activation process. For assistance, please email social@netspend.com.

I've watched 4 days of Netspend completely fabricate the manner of charges. I made 2 charges Netspend counted as 4 with an overcharge as one whole charge, then a day later zero money charged. So I charged again, and that charge remained pending for 2 days. Finally after 4 days of constant change it all counts 4 charges. Who got the extra money? The Company I charged, their website only lists 3 charges.

Purchased the card and placed $200 on it at time of purchase. Activated the card. First time that I tried to use the card it was denied and advise me to call customer service. Customer service informed me that I was no longer eligible for the card ad they would charge me a fee to refund the balance. Overseas call center reading from a script is always a frustration. I don't recommend Visa or the Netspend BS Debit Card.

I went to deposit money in my bank account but instead it went to a prepaid card I never put on my paypal account. Paypal is having a tough time getting it back. This is a straight up theft of funds. I dont own a card and can not sign into the account. Pay pal is now looking into how the fake paypal card from Netspend got on my account. Never once did I use a prepaid card in the past all of a sudden now!

Don't brother. They charge a good amount ( fee) for every transaction tied to your card, it adds up rather quickly.
They also take it upon themselves to put hold on your card with out any notice or attempt to fix the issue. Instead they leave you stranded, with no access to your money. Waiting on hold for 35 min to be told the reasonings for the hold was to to an usual transaction was made using the card get this $#*! the amount which sent off red flags was for $1.00. Yep. Done

I think this is a great set up for the irresponsible, you do pay 9.95 a month to keep this card, but it a lot cheaper than banks overdraft fees. You put money on the card, and the card quits working when your out of money, no worry.

My husband Tim Fox works for command Security and his paycheck was due to be direct deposited Saturday morning at 1:00am! Due to the inefficiency if this company no one at Command Security has gotten paid as of this morning! Our rent was due to be paid no later than yesterday so this morning we are getting an eviction notice at 8:00 am! We have been without food to feed our grandaughters and my husband has been stranded at work for two days working 12 shifts each day with no sleep because we have no gas in the car to get him home. Now he's stranded there again! I am filing a law suit against this company for all the losses we are suffering and our eviction! I encourage everyone who didn't get paid to do so to.
