I want to preface this review by saying this is entirely about Republic Services' underhanded business practices and does not reflect on their route drivers who have generally been reliable. I know this list is long, but in three years they've accumulated a lot of reasons to avoid doing business with them, such as: 1. Your rates will significantly increase every year on the anniversary of setting up service, but you won't find out until you get the "annual" invoice. 2. They claim to give you the absolute best price they can, but if you attempt cancellation they offer you a reduced rate. In other words, they are absolutely NOT giving you the best rate they can, so therefor are lying about their pricing. As an example, after my second yearly price increase they gave me a reduced rate that was lower than the first yearly price increase. 3. If you get a reduced rate you have to pay up front to get it, and if you decide to cancel anyway they revoke that reduction even if it's a few weeks later. If you have autopay you will still be charged for the prior increased rate anyway because: 4. When you set up autopay, the minute your invoice posts your payment is "automatically approved", so if you pay your bill prior to the scheduled autopay, you get charged again anyway (see #6). This in turn becomes a credit on your account because they don't reverse online transactions and you have to call and request a refund, which they only do by check. Also, they apply the reduced amount as the credit, not the increased charge. 5. They still charge you when they can't pick up due to adverse weather conditions. They also still charge you if they fail to pick up under normal conditions, and it's up to you to call and reschedule a pick up or get a credit on your account, though that takes threat of cancellation, and they will try to use the bad weather excuse whenever they can. (see #8) 6. They claim their system takes 2-3 weeks to update, so changes to your account won't occur until then and won't be reflected on your invoices, and things like a cancelled autopay will still be active for that period. They also claim they can't make changes to their automated systems, which is another lie since they definitely will update invoices and contact you immediately if you owe them money. 7. They mislead, retain, and "weaponize" information in order to counter complaints and/or shirk responsibility. There's absolutely nothing on their website regarding any of the information outlined in this list. The only way to get this info is gradually through a series of attempted issue resolutions (see #8). Or by reading this entire review LOL! 8. During calls they implement psychological manipulation tactics, primarily in two ways: Fast, unrelenting speech with constant interruptions when you are trying to talk (steamrolling), or attempted sympathy for their daily business struggles to make it seem "personal" so you forget they are a huge, faceless corporation that banks on their customers' ignorance and/or aversions to confounding CSR encounters. Also, it should be assumed you'll be on hold for at least 20 minutes any time you call in. Republic Services' ethics are negligible at best. They are petty, deceitful, and it's quite clear they have little regard for their customers. In my own experience, it took getting the Better Business Bureau involved to get things sorted out because they won't work with you to resolve issues that negatively impact them financially and believe me, they cherish their money right down to the last penny. Thankfully, my bank and the BBB did the job Republic Services outright refused to do, and I was able to recover all funds owed to me. I hope if you made it through this entire diatribe it helps you in making your decision on whether or not to do business with them, to which I'd simply say, just don't! The End.
Nature of Complaint:
Unfair billing practices and refusal to provide a refund after service cancellation. Description:
I was a customer of Republic Services for approximately 15 years under their "Pay As You Throw" program. In June 2025, the company sent me a notice stating this program would be discontinued as of July 1,2025. The notice indicated that unused service stickers could be credited toward a new subscription plan, but no information was given about refunds for customers not continuing service. I called customer service multiple times before and after July 1st to request a refund for my unused stickers. Initially, I was told refunds were not available. Later I was told to call after the program officially ended. After doing so, I made two requests: A refund for my unused stickers. Removal of the company's trash and recycling containers from my property. Despite informing them that I still had their containers (which I had cleaned and prepared for pickup), Republic Services claimed I was not listed as having them. I reiterated my request for a refund first, then pickup. Instead of a refund (which by the way is supposed to be $87), I was issued a bill totaling $66.95 for container removal ($10 for trash, $51 for recycling) and a $5.95 administrative fee. A credit of $85.50 was applied for the unused stickers, leaving a supposed account credit of $18.55. I was told these charges were for picking up their own containers, but no mention of such fees was included in their previous communications or in any agreement I signed. I consider this practice deceptive. The company imposed new fees without prior disclosure and created barriers to refunding unused services. I believe this behavior is unprofessional, unethical, and possibly in violation of consumer protection standards.
Driver didn't attach to my container properly and the entire thing fell into the garbage truck. Driver got out, got back in and drove off (my husband happened to be in the garage at the time and watched the whole thing). I called to request a new container and was told they would bring one on our next pickup day, so we had to go for a week without a container to put our trash in. The operator offered me a bill credit of $1.85 for my inconvenience. What a joke!
They will damage your vehicle and refuse to repair the damage that they cause and be the most rude people that you ever that to.
Only leaving one star b/c I had to- otherwise they would get none. Horrible customer service- they bought out our local company, a company that we had trash service w/ for years. Never had a contract or agreement. Republic raises rates every 10-12 months. When trying to cancel services- was told they "need" 60 days. When trying to schedule tote pickup- they are trying to charge a pick up fee ($110/dumpster and $30/can) that we never agreed to or signed a contract for. I was told by one of their supervisors I needed a lawyer to call their legal team as they "would be turning me over to collections". This seems like extortion? To just randomly charge a fee that was never agreed to. Absolutely insane customer service- I have spent hours on the phone with the call center- who transfers me to "case managers" who transfer me to their supervisor. Sometimes the message to have a high up "mistakenly" does not get relayed so when I'm told it will be 24-48 hours for a call back, I have to call back 4-5 business days later to speak to someone. Absolutely horrible.
Republic Services made me wait for 85 minutes to setup my account with them for my New house I called them some agents rude 😕I talked to a supervisor about this one Julie good service I started with them April 28th instead May 1st
Do not use this company! They will lock you into a three year contract. Then in the fine print it basically says they can raise the price at any time. Less than a year after signing they jacked my rate up 30% higher! I got quotes from other companies that were lower than my original rate. Republic said they would match it only if I signed a new 3 year contract. So I did, then less than a year later they raise my rate 30% again! I said I want it lower they said they could lower it a little bit but only if I re-sign another 3 year contract. I'm not sure how this isn't criminal! My advise is stay away from this company! Don't ever sign anything with them. I will be talking to a lawyer to see how they can get away with a scam like this.
I was paying yearly but EVERY year my billing cycle rate increased. My service did not improve and I did not have more trash. My initial bill was $140 yearly but I ended up paying almost 400 a year ridiculous price. They added more extra charges I didn't change anything. Dece6 I called to cancel my service they offered better price. I was charged over $50 To pick up their trash can. I called the office to say what a cheat to charge more to pick up the can than a one time fee for trash pick up.
What an awful corporation. Do Not pay these prices.

Inconsistent pickups! Customer service is atrocious! Save yourself the aggravation! Do not use service! Paying for a month of service I don't want and to pick up trash can…$137 for final month! It's crazy!
Please avoid this company. Provides below average service with even worse communication. I called to cancel service when I sold my house. They said it was too late to stop my 3 month auto payment being drafted in a week. The buyers of my house has already called to establish service. They delivered them a new container, then kept $61 of my money for picking up my container which was identical to the one they delivered them. There were several rate increases over time as well. They are most definitely concerned with getting as much of your money as possible. I warned them negative reviews were going to be posted if they did not want to try to make things right. Apparently they do not care about bad reviews and hope people are dumb enough to continue signing up. There are other less expensive, better ran options available.
We constantlyhave to clean up and pick up trash after the service pick up. We make sure our trash is in bags and in the receptacle. Well, the last 3 pick ups we have had to clean up a mess of trash strewn all over our yard, street and driveway.
They keep telling me I owe over $100. They have NEVER picked up my trash. They took over for GFL, I have tried for over 2 years to get resolved.
They missed scheduled trash pick up. They blame the weather. Never adjust the bill accordingly. Never notifies us. They said they were coming Monday, today and to salt the driveway. We did. Even though it's 53 degrees out. They never showed up again. Now, they are saying they are coming tomorrow. And tomorrow may never come. The account manager could care less. Very unresponsive company. Not clear how their CEO earns more than 11 million a year. This is ludicrous.
After the Storm we were told to put our damage fencing and neat piles by the curb well I did that it came through they did a first pickup and said it was a first pickup and they picked up some of my neighbors and the following week they passed us by again they didn't pick up our pile well on both trash day they didn't pick it up then the second month came by they didn't pick it up so I called for Miss picked up I called him three times had it scheduled for pickup they said they would pick it up and they didn't I pay for bulk pickup they didn't pick it up then on top of that the driver chooses not to pick up my trash can on regular pickup gets my neighbors on both sides of me but not my can and I pay quarterly auto pay so what's his excuse this time for not picking up my trash apparently he's lazy doesn't want to pick up the boat trash and who knows that might be a different driver so are you hiring nothing but lazy $#*! drivers that don't want to do their job for what we are paying them to pick up I called for Miss pickup on my can and I get they'll be out there the next day well guess what I get home the can is still there go figure
Horrible customer service. I made plenty of calls where they don't show up.because of snow or movie or lack of drivers. When I called to cancel it took three days and three phone calls. This company is third rate,
I contracted this company for residential garbage pickup in November of 2023. My garbage has been picked up once. They have so many excuses but are never able to pickup my garbage. I cancelled the service today, 2/21/2024 and guess what, my trash was not picked up again. I'm so disappointed being new to the state and dealing with a business like this. They need to be held accountable and learn how to treat their customers!
Have had RS for over 30 yrs. In the beginning you could put out trash in bags, bundles, and boxes. Would take it all, house trash, grass, leaves, branches. Then came the rolling trash barrel. Now allowed only four kitchen bags of trash and the price is $100 a month. Plus we now have added a fuel surcharge, even though fuels prices. No yard waste unless it fits in the barrel. It's a rip off. Trashcan is a wonderful guy, but the company, owned by none other than Bill Gates, is a money grubbing bunch of shisters.
Answer: Only company that offered recycling in our area but obviously an over priced scam since both bins were emptied into same truck.
Answer: My guess is money laundering. I don't know what's in those Republic trucks I see driving around, but it sure isn't garbage! Also, they just don't care.
Answer: They are legit, just like to rip you off. You are going to pay out the butt for all the add on fees
Answer: There are other choices, so do your research and get a better and cheaper company
