Rover has a rating of 1.2 stars from 605 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Rover most frequently mention customer service, pet sitter, and next day problems. Rover ranks 488th among Dogs sites.
The reviews on here are absolutely insane, and not in a good way. 95% of Rover sitters are wonderful humans who care deeply about your pets. The reviews on here are clearly sabotage and paid for by other platforms. I will say that Rover as a platform is awful as they take 20% from sitters. Owners, if your sitter is comfortable, please pay them in cash. This will save you and them fees, plus Rover rarely actually intervenes when something goes wrong.
If you ever have a problem with billing, you will never be able to talk to someone. The sitters are wonderful, but, when my dog died, and I had to re-block for just my cat, they kept the 500+ dollars I had already paid and then made me pay again for the cat just to confirm since my dog died. Pretty heartless. Supposedly, I will get refunded for the visit I had but why can't they take the new booking out of the money I had already paid them? The most unnerving part is that they have this endless menu system that keeps you from reaching a real person. Their ratings also look really high on Google, but that's because the people they have a sitters are really good business end is terrible.
ROVER not only takes a big cut out of the Pet Sitters Pay (possibly as high as 25%) which YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY PAYING FOR in their daily rate, but as I understand it, they also tack on at least another 11% on top of what the sitter charges directly to you per day (in effect, you are taxed twice at egregious rates in my humble option). So, for example, If the sitter charges you $40 per day and Rover takes 25% or $10 from the sitter, then the sitter nets $30. Then if Rover charges you an extra 11% on that $40 daily rate or $4.40 which means that out of $30 sitting fee that the sitter gets, Rover gets $14.40 or 48%! BUT, it gets worse, they don't tell you up front when you are shopping that if you book any day within one of their holiday dates, that YOUR ENTIRE STAY is charged at this HIGHER THAN STATED HOLIDAY PRICE that the sitter can enter into Rover's hidden data base. When you see a sitter with a $40, for example daily rate, they do not list the holiday rate or the holidays within that disclosure. One sitter may have a $5 per day holiday mark up and another a $10 per day holiday mark up OR MORE, you just don't know from looking at each sitters profile sheet. So for example, Martin Luther King Day was 1/14 - 1/17 this year and if your Pet's stay was for 2 weeks running from 1/17 to 1/31 and their Holiday rate jumped from $40 to $50, then you would be charged $50 per day for the entire 14 day period, not just the one day within that Holiday period! It does not matter that your pet's stay was only one day within this holiday period, your entire stay gets upcharged, even those days not within the holiday period which is incredulous! Can I say that it KEEPS GETTING EVEN WORSE!? If you stay over 2 hours to 8 hours, you are charged for another half of a day. So you stayed another 2 hours or 8.33% of a full 24 hour day and you are charged for half of a day or 50%. If you stay over 8 hours (33% of a day), then you are charged for a full (100%) day plus of course the additional 11%. I find their mark up policies to be even more egregious than even those of an attorney and that is saying quite a bit! They lack transparency and clear up front disclosure and obviously for good reason. Caveat Emptor!
Most of these reviews represent the pet owners. This one is from the perspective of a sitter. I was a pet sitter for 3 years. Hundreds of 5 star reviews over the 3 years with only 3 negative ones. We had over 500 customers and as hard as you try, you can't please everyone. The one that got us closed down was one where the owner lied about their dogs behaviors. They did not disclose until the day care started that it was an escape artist. I stipulate this on my site since we live on acreage and it's often hard to see what the dog is doing when they're playing out in a pasture. We are fenced. They said she wouldn't dig under or jump over. They also said she was extemely friendly and never aggressive toward people. Long story short, she was not friendly and she did dig. She wouldn't come inside. I tried to leash her and she tried to bite me. While going for help, she dug out. Although she was okay, she was hurt as a result of her escape. We chased her for hours, literally. If we got close she snarled and growled and snapped. I get that she was probably scared but this is not a friendly dog. For this incident, Rover shuts off our account. So, for all the pet owners who think they don't close accouns quickly enough, I feel like they didn't investigate this at all and penalized us for something beyond our control. The owner apologied to us. Stated it wasn't our fault. They didn't know their dog would act that way. We have no prior incidents or write ups. But we still got shut down and lost a serious source of income. Rover is bad on both sides and only think about their bottom line. There are so many sitters and owners, they aren't the least bit concerened with losing any.
I had a sitter watch two of my dogs about a month ago. I was uneasy having them stay with a person they didn't know but they are really good dogs and the sitter agreed to a meet & greet and that no other animals would be present. Found out after we dropped off the dogs that the sitter was housing cats, but she stated they would be "locked out of sight from the dogs in a room they could not enter." Ultimately was told after days of no response from the sitter that one of my dogs killed two cats!?! The sitter texted me the my dog "somehow opened up one fo the cages and killed the cats." I asked how were there cats present when she stated no other animals would be there and why were they not locked up in the other room as she stated. Unfortunately, the sitter "do not want to talk about it" and would offer no proof of anything. Fearing for the safety of my dogs, I did not push the subject. A day later she texted me that she had actually found the 2nd cat so my dog only killed one of her cats!?!? I had no idea what the heck was going on because she still would not offer any further information. When I got home to pick up my dogs, the sitter said they were the best dogs ever and that she would be more than happy to sit for them again. I didn't want to give her a bad rating because of her loss and decided to just not use her again. However a few days later Rover is contacting me because she put a complaint on my dogs stating they killed her cat. I shared all the texts and messages as proof with Rover that there were supposed to be no other animals present and that she basically failed to keep all the animals safe and even exaggerated the story. Rover's response was "Sorry but when a animal kills another animal regardless of the situation, that owner gets booted from the site." I was in disbelief! The sitter basically lied and failed to uphold our agreement and safety regulations and she is still allowed to sit, while I can no longer use the site? Worse yet, they would not let me leave an honest review of the sitter. Further requests for a second review of the situation has gone unanswered by Rover. I had such high hopes for this service but Rover's regulations do not support their advertising or mission. Stay away from these sitters as they can get away with anything.
It's 4th of July, after a pleasant trip from Parker to Co Spgs Co, by Castle Rock on I-25, we saw small dog lying in the middle of the highway, he had been hit by a car. A young girl was running towards him who had pulled over, we pulled over as well as 5 other cars. She picked the young dog up, Charlie, he was pouring blood from his mouth, he had feces all over him after being hit, it was apparent that at least one of his back legs was badly broken as it was just hanging. We called 911 and the young girl that picked him had a white shirt on that was now covered with blood as was her arm, she was going back to her car so she could take him to a vet. A kind man took Charlie from her, he was now covered with blood also as well as Charlie's feces. Charlie was so scared and confused, he was hurt so bad. A Colorado State Trooper arrived, he took the man who was holding Charlie and left, lights and sirens, to the nearest vet. We tried getting hold of the name on Charlie's collar. Apparently, they had left for a weekend in the mountains and left Charlie with... a Rover sitter named Sherry. We found out where they had taken Charlie, and went there. We wanted to share our interaction with Charlie's owners with the police. The vet tech said he wasn't doing well, the vet talked with Charlie's owners and it was decided to euthanize Charlie, due to Sherry's negligence and inability to do the ONLY thing she had been hired for, keep Charlie safe. I think he might have been part Golden Retriever, I don't know. He wasn't even a year old yet. He was a beautiful little dog and I am still crying as well as probably the other 8 people who tried to save him. The only person not there was the person who was entrusted to take care of him, Rover and Sherry. PLEASE PLEASE do not use these people, this is not the first or last story of Rover you will hear, they do not care who they hire, it's a warm body to take care of your family member.
Do not use these guys. You will see they lost or killed a ladies dogs. And have given no information. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY
The Rover sitter almost burned my kitchen down, ruined my wood floors and Rover is doing NOTHING about it! AWFUL! STAY AWAY!
My dog sitter Maria, whom I hired through rover.com, was lying to me for 10 weeks about her time spent at my house. My experience with Maria the dog sitter will be detailed below. However, this review is for Rover.com as a business. Even though Rover was provided video evidence and a detailed spreadsheet of the Dog-sitters time spent at my house, as well as video evidence of her "no showing" and bringing other people and other DOGS into my house, they chose to only refund me $293.75 of the $1600. 00 I spent and did not get the service. They also still have the dog sitter listed on their website for other people to use, despite what she did to me and my dogs. They did not handle this situation well at all. And now this dog sitter will be caring for other people's animals and lying to them as well.
My experience: Do not trust Maria! Terrible experience, was totally ripped off for 10 weeks and my poor dogs. Maria worked for me over the course of 10 weeks. She appeared to be doing what I was paying her for which was supposed to be an hour long visit around 11 and an hour visit around 2. She checked in and checked out at appropriate times and sent me pictures. However, I found out via my neighbors video cameras she was not showing up for the 11:00 visit but was still checking in and out. Also, she would stay only a short period of time when she did show up (7 min, 14 min, 18 min, 38, and 10 min to name a few). I was paying her for 2 hours per day and sometimes her total time at my house was 14 minutes. Also she wouldn't show up until 1:30,2:42,2:13,1:29, and 1:56 pm to name a few when she was supposed to be there around 11 for my puppy who is in a cage as she is young. Absolutely none of her check in and check out times matched up to when she was actually at my house. She was also caught on camera bringing other dogs into my house on multiple occasions (I have a territorial dog) as well as other people into my house. She also was caught on camera locking my older dog in my garage in the dark for 40 minutes. She let my puppy eat two pairs of my shoes while she was being paid to watch her. I was lied to for 10 weeks and as a result of using Maria my poor puppy was locked in her cage for sometimes 8 hours at a time as she would not show up but was making me think she was there by checking in and out. This was a daily occurrence, not just one time, and all proven with video camera footage.
Picture was taken from a hidden camera in garage. It shows her bringing another dog into my house if you zoom in.
I hired Cassi C in the Minneapolis area to housesit and dogsit. Explicit directions verbally the day before I left, and in writing. My dog is 4 lbs and recovering from surgery. She texted me throughout and said she was at my home. I was ill and came home early - only to find she was LYING THE WHOLE TIME. It was quite obvious no one had slept in my bone and my dog was acting very scared. The sitter apparently picked up my dog, and brought her to her parents house in Burnsville MN and told me she was at MY home. Talked to me on phone, sent photos, all lies. They have other animals, I have no idea what my dog was fed, where she slept, etc as Cassi and her father couldn't get their lies straight. Long story short when reported to Rover - they could care less. Due to "privacy policies" they will not tell me where my dog was while I was away, and this woman *is still listed on the site*. I am physically disabled and she went on to make fun of me due to that, and threaten me because I asked her father (where she later said she took the dog) what happened when she wouldn't answer me (messages BLOCKED). She only admitted that AFTER I told her my building had security cameras.
She is a proven liar in her early twenties, with influential parents to cover anything up. Turns out she even lied about where she worked outside Rover.
I'm out a vet bill and lock changing fee not to mention the intentional emotional mistreatment and stress it caused.
Rover will only cooperate if I get a court order - even though they have all the evidence in writing AND PHOTOS that Cassi lied repeatedly. I had to get my locks changed because this young woman and her family were harassing ME after she took my dog without permission! Turns out she comes from some wealthy political family and I was told they will only respond to an attorney (which costs $6000 retainer).
Unbelievably bad company. ALSO - their money back guarantee has a $250 deductible FYI. Read the fine print. They'll do anything to protect sitters. I just thank God my dog seems to be ok after the horror stories I've read.
Tip for consumers:
There is a $250 deductible on their “Rover guarantee”. Even if a sitter is caught lying - they explicitly stated will not cooperate unless they get an order from a judge. No accountability for sitters and they will not get taken off the site.
Products used:
dog sitting. dog walking.
This site is awful! You will get so much spam it's terrible. This site sells people info beware!
