Rover has a rating of 1.2 stars from 605 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about Rover most frequently mention customer service, pet sitter, and next day problems. Rover ranks 488th among Dogs sites.
The reviews on here are absolutely insane, and not in a good way. 95% of Rover sitters are wonderful humans who care deeply about your pets. The reviews on here are clearly sabotage and paid for by other platforms. I will say that Rover as a platform is awful as they take 20% from sitters. Owners, if your sitter is comfortable, please pay them in cash. This will save you and them fees, plus Rover rarely actually intervenes when something goes wrong.
If you ever have a problem with billing, you will never be able to talk to someone. The sitters are wonderful, but, when my dog died, and I had to re-block for just my cat, they kept the 500+ dollars I had already paid and then made me pay again for the cat just to confirm since my dog died. Pretty heartless. Supposedly, I will get refunded for the visit I had but why can't they take the new booking out of the money I had already paid them? The most unnerving part is that they have this endless menu system that keeps you from reaching a real person. Their ratings also look really high on Google, but that's because the people they have a sitters are really good business end is terrible.
The pet sitter I chose had good reviews, so I inquired about availability and pickup time at noon, the "day of." On that day, I received a message from her at 5:00 am stating that she works during the day and would not be able to pick my pet up at that time. This caused me to have to cancel my travel plans with my kids. To make matters worse, I was only partially refunded. On top of that, I was unable to provide a review of this sitter since it was canceled.
I am mostly upset about missing this valuable time away with my kids. Additionally, the fact that I am unable to warn potential customers of this sitter is also upsetting. I will never use this service again.
My pet was injured and the sitter refused to take him to the vet with the free coupon I gave her. I was several states away and when I got back I had to take him to the doctor and he got pain meds.
Rover did not post my review of the sitter and still have her at 5 stars. This is irresponsible as it does not allow pet owners to have a full understanding of the reviews for each sitter and gives a false review system.
I do not recommend at all.
Tip for consumers:
Be careful. We don't know the actual rating of the pet sitter.

Sent out four requests for a dogwalker the same day, three hours in advance. First person responded and said she was no longer with Rover. Why is she still listed then? The second was out of town. The third one answered two days later and said they were unavailable. The fourth one did not answer at all. What a hassle.
I signed up for Rover 3 weeks ago. I spent about an hour of my personal time setting up an account, paid for a background check, asked references to take time out of their day to write me a testimony, etc. All of this seems completely fair as I was assuming in a week, maybe two, I would begin to create my own side job. Rover has horrible customer service and would not help me process my account or tell me what the delay was for my account. As someone who needed to make some extra money and took the time to sign up for this account, it is extremely frustrating, for now it to have been 3 weeks and no update, no communication, no explanation. Do not sign up to work with Rover.
It's easy for sitters to put on a good face on the site, but it's hard to know what actually goes on behind the scenes because our pets can't tell us. I'm sure there are good sitters, but I have experienced a poor sitter myself and I have witnessed a neighbor sitter kicking dogs, being aggressive in general and keeping dogs in the garage (in the hot, humid summer) even though her reviews are good.
Great sitter. The app asked me to confirm my repeating appointme to. It then double booked me and raised my rates. It is now randomly generating appointments. I have had to dispute charge and also block them from charging more.

Terrible ghetto dog sitters. Stolen items and broken things in my house and Rover wants nothing to do with it. No help. Horrible sitters and support team. Unbelievable how this app is allowed to run a biz with no accountability.
The Rover system forced me to book one 3-week booking as 2 separate bookings in order to avoid getting overcharged for holiday fees. By doing so, I was charged their $39 service fee each time. Then one of my pets got sick and I needed to add medical visits to the existing 3-week booking. Guess what, no way to update the existing reservation with the new info, so they charged me another $39 in fees. I escalated twice to their service department, who then admitted their system had limitations but told me there was nothing they could do about it and they weren't going to reimburse me. Sounds sketchy, greedy, and ridiculous. No thanks! I'll work with sitters directly so that Rover gets NOTHING for a sitter's hard work.
As of June 2018, wh has to have my poor Monty's eye removed. He kept getting scratches and running into things which would cause infections that we could never get to heal completely. Ultimately we had to get his eye removed so he wasn't always miserable with an infected eye.
(And the operation had to be payed out of pocket, because Rover wouldn't even consider helping with the cost because it was "out of the allotted time."
I really try not to complain or give bad reviews. But after a few weeks of this stewing in my head, I decided I have to warn other doggie parents.
Ever used the dog watching/walking app Rover.com? I would suggest you dont or you stop. I found a sitter that I really, really liked. I booked her multiple times on the app. However, the last time my dogs were there, my poor Monty was bit by another dog. On the eye. This is in NO way the sitters fault.
After taking Monty to the doggie ER because his eye was bleeding, they said the bite went through all three eyelids and were concerned that it hit his cornea. However, due to the extremely bad infection they couldnt tell until that was taken care of. So off we went with some meds for my pup. Needless to say, I was devastated.
Then Rover contacted me and said they would pay for the medical expenses within a 30 day period. Somewhere there must have been some miscommunication, because I was under the impression that because this was going to need time to be properly diagnosed they were going to pay it all minus the $250 deductible. (They also claim to have premium insurance.) This was GREAT news. I took Monty in for a follow up. His eye was still bleeding, only it was on the inside and not draining. My vet recommended I take him to a doggie oncologist. I did, and they said he had an ulcer that needed to be taken care of before she could tell what the damage is. I went home with more meds. A few weeks later we had a follow up appt and sure enough, he was blind in his left eye due to retinal disconnection from the dog bite. From the day of the injury until the discovery of his official blindness, was just over a month. So Rover.com reimbursed me the costs within the 30 days and denied my costs outside the month window. There may be more costs in the future depending on if his eye bulges and pain level, his eye may need to be removed. In my opinion, this is flat out wrong. Some may think otherwise, but Monty is my fur-baby, hes my first born. I treat my dogs like they are a part of the family. Now due to an injury he got while under the care of a rover sitter he is permanently blind in his eye and Im expected to pay for the rest of the medical expenses accrued due to this dog bite. Not cool.
Do not use Rover to hire a dog sitter! My wife and I did and it was a disaster. The sitter never showed up. Our poor dogs were left inside for over 8 hours. We had paid for the sitter and our room up north and we were looking forward to a night together. We never heard from the sitter so we had my wife's mom and dad go check on the pups, they were inside and no one had been there. There leashes and collars were still exactly where I had put them. A crying shame, so irresponsible. So my wife and I got back in the car and drove the 4 and 1/2 hours back home All the money for bed and breakfast, gas etc, gone to waste due to a no show sitter. We reached out to rover but no help. Cannot even warn others about this sitter I pray it does not happen to anyone else. Thanks for nothing Erin
They say they support the dog sitters but when I ran into difficulty - response was
Honey, we are not an insurance company and they hung up.
I was with a dog that bit me so I had to wear oven mitts to feed him and he bit the paper girl. Horrible company I admit the accident was my fault but they should carry insurance. End of dealing with them.
I used the service for the first time to board my beagle so I could attend funeral services for my in-laws. With in 24 hours my dog was hurt. I came home as quickly as I could ( over 900 miles away we drove) and took her to my vet. My dog ( not even 2) tore her acl and Rover says oh well we are not responsible OMG!
I have been a Rover for 3.5 years. Recently my cat was attacked by a dog I was sitting. The owner indicated their dog gets along with cats however it clearly didn't. Rover refused to honor the guarantee until AFTER I had taken my cat to the vet and racked up hundreds. They then choose to pay or not pay. They reached out to the owner to get them to pay. That is clearly NOT what they they state in writing.
Tip for consumers:
ROVER CLEARLY LIES ABOUT THEIR "ROVER GUARANTEE". Do NOT trust them unless you have thousands to blow on you pet.

I am a ROVER but I won't be much longer!
For all of those in the South East the decide to use this service, please know that if you cancel your reservation it is only 50% refundable for a storm up to and including a Cat 2 Hurricane!
We cancelled our reservation due to Tropical Storm Nicole as the area we were going to was flooded and it did not qualify for a 100% refund. We were told nothing under a Cat 2 Hurricane was covered 100%.
Buyer Beware!
I booked with Rover a week+ in advance. Two days before the booking was supposed to start the sitter cancelled. Ok fine. However. It takes 7-10 (according to the supervisor I spoke to) business days for the money to get back into my account so unless you have the money to pay again or the time to wait for the refund to process you are out of luck. They will do nothing for you. NOTHING. Even with the money to pay again why would I? The little $20 credit added to my account was a joke. Doesn't even begin to cover half a day. Don't waste your money. Use a pet hotel or professional boarder.
I know a lot of people are having terrible experiences and most likely don't trust rover anymore but you really have to review the employee, maybe even ask them if you can talk on the phone with them and ask them question and if they like take forever to answer or sound like they don't know what their talking about then they most likely don't have experience or even care about this job. This week I am applying to rover and I have many years of experience and not just with dogs, with many other types of animals. My name is Arianna.
Apparently one of our dogs snapped a bit at the rover sitter. He is highly trained and all actions stated were the opposite of any of his usual behaviors. The sitter then decided to return them to our home after only 11 hours and left them unattended for over 20 hours before rover found someone to replace the orginal person. They had pooped in their crates and sat in it for who knows how long. Rover decided to put $10/120 paid back into our account only to decide to block our account a few days later and not respond. We still don't know the whole situation that occurred. The second rover said the dogs were both well behaved and none of the behavior from the first rover was sighted. Very disappointed with the people they trust to watch dogs and the quality of care as well as their horrible customer service.
I rate the dog/cat sitters as excellent. However, I feel that Rover.com as a company practices misleading procedures. If you book on a holiday you will be charged a higher rate. There would not be a problem with that, but they don't state if up front when you are emailing the provider, but later when you go to pay. This is a misleading business practice and they need to be more upfront about it rather than just apologizing about it from a customer service rep.
I have hired two sitters through Rover.com, both were horrible. The first one just didnt show up. Had some excuse that her grandfather died, but that turned out to be a lie.
The 2 nd one (who had 5 * reviews) told me she would stay from 6 in the evening until 9 the next morning. My neighbors reported that she came fir an out 5 minutes, fed the dogs and left until the next day! Seriously! She was a pathological liar and was telling me she was in my house even though my neighbor was on my porch looking in my front window and only saw my scared, hungry dogs! No more Rover for me!
I was forced to move to Rover when they purchased Dogbuddy, and within one month I lost all my clients.
The notifications for bookings take up to 6 hours to reach my phone, this is terrible and makes being flexible and reliable impossible. Payments went missing, sometimes customer service never get back to you and when they do it's up to a week later. The whole system is flawed and you have lost me as a trusted sitter with many repeat clients.
Rover advertises themselves as providing a guarantee. Our cat sitter caused several thousand dollars worth of water damage in our house, and it's all being covered by our home owner's insurance. We are paying the full deductible. One of the major reasons we choose to use Rover is their guarantee, precisly so that issues like this would be covered by them and not our insurance. But their guarantee is completely worthless.
We went through Rover.com and hired what we thought was legitimate house and pet sitter. The short of it was the pet sitter did not follow directions and ended poisoning our dog. Then after noticing the dog was very ill, did not take her to vet as directed. Instead she watched the dog die and then posted pictures of her dying on Rover's website. When contacting Rover and dealing with them you are just passed down the line.
I used this site a few times and had good service from one sitter however she was unavailable and we used another that I was hesitant to use again but I was under pressure. 2 pairs of shoes were taken from my house and when I confronted the sitter she asked for proof and when I called to complain to Rover they have simply done nothing and didn't follow up with me unless I contacted them. I'm so angry, violated and disgusted that I paid someone to come to my house and simply look after my puppy and ended up robbed. I can only be happy nothing happened to my puppy. I wouldn't recommend this site to anyone and if you contemplate using it, use it at your own risk- buy cameras and locks! I put 1 as a rating otherwise I'm not allowed to post this, but I'd really like to put 0
I made the mistake of hiring someone I met on Rover off the site. I would have asked for my money back if I had gone through the site. We have a camera, she didn't do what we asked for the cats. She smoked in the house, left it a pigsty and used our bathroom--her clothes and shoes were in the bathroom when we came home a day early. Rover still has her sitter even though I reached out to them. Hire at your own risk!
UPDATE: I want to add that I interviewed the woman via Zoom, then did an in home interview and checked her references. You can do research and your homework and people can still fool you. And Rover doesn't care.
I cancelled 2 rover bookings over 3 weeks ago and it was 8 days before the rover booking was to happen. I have called twice because I have not received either refund and I have not been issued a refund. Terrible to do business with. They are quick to take your money but don't refund your money even following their cancellation guidelines.
