“Rover as a platform is terrible, but the sitters are legitimate.”

Becky S.
8/11/22

The reviews on here are absolutely insane, and not in a good way. 95% of Rover sitters are wonderful humans who care deeply about your pets. The reviews on here are clearly sabotage and paid for by other platforms. I will say that Rover as a platform is awful as they take 20% from sitters. Owners, if your sitter is comfortable, please pay them in cash. This will save you and them fees, plus Rover rarely actually intervenes when something goes wrong.

Top Critical Review

“Terrible customer service”

Doug L.
10/6/24

If you ever have a problem with billing, you will never be able to talk to someone. The sitters are wonderful, but, when my dog died, and I had to re-block for just my cat, they kept the 500+ dollars I had already paid and then made me pay again for the cat just to confirm since my dog died. Pretty heartless. Supposedly, I will get refunded for the visit I had but why can't they take the new booking out of the money I had already paid them? The most unnerving part is that they have this endless menu system that keeps you from reaching a real person. Their ratings also look really high on Google, but that's because the people they have a sitters are really good business end is terrible.

Rover does not care about your pets at all. My pet was bitten by another pet under rover care. Wether it was they're fault or not I would have thought they'd help out with the medical cost partially at least. The damage was very gruesome and my daughter was there while it all happened. Thank god we are blessed he made it alive. But they did not sympathize at all. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR FUR BABYS. DO NOT TRUST THEM! I mean it. Never use rover if you love you pets as your own children.

I have been a sitter for Rover almost 2 years. I started doing it because I had 2 sitters you were bad. I knew I could do a great job. I built my clientele had over 50+ positive reviews. I got a client who needed same day service, because where the dogs were at they couldn't be handled, on my way to them 2 little boys hit me on a 4-wheeler. The owners were very inconsiderate and said to get there to get their dogs. I did as soon as the ambulance fire trucks abs police let me leave the scene. After the stay with dogs, owner stated I stole their dog bed, I gave the dog fleas, and I hurt their dog. I proved 30 plus text messages to Rover from myself and the client of how great I was. The client defamed me to Rover. I had proof they never considered and only keep saying sec. 4 states. They terminated my contract and closed all my booked accounts. Very bad bad service to clients and to 1099 workers. Let's put them out of business. We can do it. America we have to stand up to these giants and take back what is right.

We felt that we had been taking advantage of friends by leaving our dogs with them on a couple of recent trips so we tried to use Rover.com. We found two five star sitters (highly recommended individuals. We set up interviews with both. The first a woman of about 25 came over to OUR home, and we gave her the information regarding our 3 day trip. Her fee was going to be $330, but at the end of her visit she said that she would advise Rover that the fee would be $75 and we should pay the difference to her in cash. The result was if she was going to cheat Rover, what could we expect in terms of the care she would offer our dogs. Remember she now has our address and knows when we will be gone. The back up was scheduled for an interview 5 days later which was only four days before our departure. She did not have transportation on the scheduled day but suggested she could Uber over the following day. It occurred to us that she may not be able to get to our home on our day of departure. We said not to bother. I called the Rover support line and told them what the issues were. The representative named Alyssa said my name was not registered as the client so I could not file complaints. My significant other is the potential client so this is true. I cannot recommend Rover as a legitimate option for house or dog sitting. They cannot be trusted

Never use ROver by any means. Just look at the picture below and think before booking with this website if you want your dog to end up like this after staying with one of their dog sitters!
If I could give minus 5 I would had gave it to this platform. First the dog sitter was late when I wanted to leave my dog with him, then I found later that he is not allowed to have Doberman on his apartment by his property manager so when I shared the info with Rover management they said in sample words its not their problem as long as nothing showed up on the dog sitter background check but the worst is that I had to take my dog to surgery because the dog sitter tighten the collar so much on my dog to not have him as he wasn't allowed to have big dogs on his apartment while the guy was having more than 2.
After the surgery of my dog that cost me more than 750$ Rover refused to pay the full expenses because they had a policy bla bla bla basically they are always looking for ways not to taking full responsibility of their dog sitters mistakes hiding after insurance, policies,... and when you call their Staff all what they say is sorry for the inconvenience bla bla! I don't need your sorry... bottom line Never use Rover services or you will regret it and don't be fooled by low prices because you will pay the high prices at the end! All what this platform cares about is $$$$$$$$

So I'm a Rover sitter, and have been doing so for a little over a month because I recently left my teaching job. In that time, I have racked up about 30 clients, all 5 star reviews, and several repeat clients. The majority of the reviews here are completely bogus. I find it extremely hard to believe that these things would happen via Rover sitters.
Most sound completely fake to me based on my experience as a sitter and all of my conversations with my Rover clients, all of whom are very satisfied with the service. Yes, we are background checked, and clients have complete control over who they choose as a sitter, so for these supposed disgruntled clients, it's up to you to do your due diligence and get to know the sitter a bit during the meet and greet. 99% of us are wonderful, kind, educated, pet-loving people.
And regarding a review complaining about paying $25 for a 30 minute visit... what do you expect? That 30 minute visit is more like an hour for us when you include our travel time to and from your house. Not to mention the cost of gas. Most reputable sitters are not willing to work for pennies.

I've had multiple positive interactions with many pet sitters on Rover. Most recently, I've found a consistent house sitter for my 4 pets who has watched my home & pets multiple times since I first hired him from the site.
There appears to be a misunderstanding with some people for the role the website plays when an owner is hiring their sitter for pet care. Before deciding to book a service on the site I checked their terms of service and also their descriptions. They are the neutral party/tool that a business owner uses to list their services. I can kind of compare it to Angie's List but specifically for pet care. Sitter's list their personal business, owners hire the business if they think it's a good fit.
When I book my pet sitter, I am hiring the pet sitter for their advertised service.
While I was searching for a trusted house sitter, I interviewed at least 5 different sitters both via messaging and in-person with what I think Rover calls a Meet & Greet. Overall, I was the one taking the time to ensure the person I allowed into my home was a good fit for my needs and my pets' needs.
When hiring anyone, it should be treated with care and intentional conversation. The website also has some handy tips & article that guided me on my questions to ask my pet sitter when determining their fitness for what I expect from my sitter.

Tip for consumers:
Interview your sitters. Some appear to do this as more of a hobby and others treat as their full time job. I prefer the latter. I intentionally interview them because it's my money & my hire.

I hired a sitter from Rover to stay at my house while pet sitting. After getting a flat tire she informed me she would be able to get back to my house until 6pm the next day, leaving my animals, including a dog alone for over 24 hours, fortunately I have a great neighbour who was able to come over to feed them and let the dog out. I left a detailed note stating if weather is cold (-15 or colder) not to take the dog for a walk, the last couple of days were more than warm enough but doesn't appear he was taken out. My neighbour informed me she was rarely at my house, really only over night and quick stop during day to let the dog out. I have a camera, which she was informed about, I checked on my guys several times a day, I literally saw her three times in 8 days, she was petting my dog in one of them which was nice to see. My neighbour said he had considered coming over and taking my dog out for a walk since the weather was good and he felt bad he was being walked. Suffice to say I will not be using Rover again.

I'm thankful for Rover to have given me the opportunity to let me do what I love anywhere I go, I've been a sitter for a couple years with them and have an amazing clientele, the only thing that I don't like is that if they are charging customers a Rover fee why do they also charge 20% commission, I feel like is a lot of money they discount when I do all the work, I know they are there to support but I have never even used their customer/emergency line, apart from that I think they are fair in how they do the search for sitters and really helpful in setting up your account! Never had any issue with payout, just know if you make an account in an area that already has established sitters, you might not be able to get any bookings for a while, and a lot of people sign up and message you and then never respond or book and that's not rovers that's mostly just people being inconsiderate.

Don't use this service if you can all avoid it. The customer service team are likened to a criminal enterprise. I need to cancel a booking and did so within 48 hours. They kept half of my money and blamed the sitter on the settings she chose for cancellation. Customer service Sid I need to ask the sitter for permission to refund the entire amount. She gave that permission and then! I called customer service a k and they stated that it wasn't clear enough when she gave permission. These people are crooks and the explanation they gave me was purely semantics. They have no intention of refunding the entire amount and they blame the sitter for it. DONT USE THIS SERVICE! THEY WILL RIP YIU OFFF

Are used one of their doggy daycare's and it was a horrible experience. I don't think they go out and inspect any of the homes, and there are no pre-qualifications to become a dog sitter. I took my nine month old Frenchy to one of their sitters, and the place was horrible. It looked like hoarders. He had three other dogs that live there all adult dogs who were very straggly looking against my better judgment. I left my pup, Leo for a few hours while I went to work because it did not sit right with me. I left work early only to find that my dog was very withdrawn once home and putting Leo to bed. I noticed there was blood on my comforter, after inspecting him I noticed his testicles were bleeding. I took him to a vet visit the next day notified Rover immediately and they gave me the complete runaround needing all types of information and it's been over seven days no reimbursement for vet bills and completely unsatisfactory results, including not even being refunded my money do not use these people.

I got a puppy in January and needed a sitter to come and let the puppy out while I was at work. I went through rover to try one and she was great. But, the next week rover sent me a message that I need ed to sign up again in order to continue re occurring. They then began to build me twice for each visit. I signed up for services to be carried out over I think it was 6 weeks. When I found out what they were doing and that there's no contacts for service and that there's no interest in anyone on rovers and to help either the sitter or myself correct this issue come I tried to cancel the services altogether. They would not let me cancel the services. In fact, 4 weeks after I tried to cancel and quit using the sitter they sent her Use a rover card which was fabricating a request from me for services. I also found out they upload all of your text messages to their app. Total violation of privacy. Again with no one willing to be contacted, they ended up ripping me off about 3:00 plus dollars. I've found a complaint with my bank and they told the bank that I never tried to cancel. I have at least 6 screenshots of my attempts to cancel where they told me they would not allow me to cancel. Stay away from rover as far as you can get. Their thieves and crooks.

Tip for consumers:
They will tell you your initial request for services expired and that to continue you need to sign up again. Then they will charge you for both. They send walkers requests for services you never asked for. They have a co tact support email no one answerss and there is no phone number. They upload text messages from your phone to the app...

More of a sitter review, but sitter is rep of Rover.com. Had to cx a trip because of sudden uptick in covid 19 pandemic causing travel restrictions and quarantines 2days before. Was told by Jennafer, of Lake Worth, Fl that I would get "full refund" if virus caused cx. However, when forced to cx, company rep said sitter's policy was 50% refund only unless 7 day advance notice(not disclosed at outset). Sitter refused any leeway for pandemic, sent this customer several acerbic texts saying How much I had cost her & that Rover set policys, and blaming customer for not giving enough notice(even tho that was not possible). I didn't even ask for full refund, just not full charge due to circumstances. Poor business acumen, poor customer service, lack of professionalism in communicating with customer.

Jada Williams Worcester MA was a vetted sitter thru Rover. Our usual family sitter was not available, so we used Jada, big mistake. First off, she has 2 prior shoplifting arrests and 2 prior incidents with Rover (theft) twice, once in February and again in August and she was still able to watch my dogs in my house. When we returned Sunday night, we quickly realized we had been robbed of old cell phones, laundry detergent, food, cash, towels, credit cards, gift cards. We contacted local PD and they already knew who she was. We have her on video rummaging thru the house and she still has the audacity to say "It wasn't me, i didn't do anything" crying the victim. All this proof and ROVER says they will not compensate us for lost or stolen items or damaged property. DO NOT USE ROVER! Join the fight against them on social media and use hashtage #RoverOut to get Rover out of your state, city or town!

Our original house/dog sitter cancelled and we have been left to scramble to find a replacement as it is from mid-December through New Year (holidays). Rover was initially helpful in sending potential replacement sitters, although out of several, only two were actually able to house sit over the dates we needed. One was a High School student who had just signed on with Rover, with no previous experience, and the other was a good fit so we figured we'd book this sitter. The issue we had was Rover had initially sent us a support email stating they would provide 25% credit towards cost of replacement. The new sitter was over $500 more expensive than our original booked/paid in full sitter. Rover admitted the Customer Service person had made a mistake and reneged on their 25% 'written' offer because the cancellation was outside their 2-week window. I have no complaints about their Terms & Conditions, but they should have honored their employees mistake and made good on the offer. It also raised other concerns; such as what else would they renege on? We have since found a great sitter through our neighborhood network. We will never use Rover again and most certainly won't recommend.

First of all Rover does not care. Secondly, if you do not have someone monitoring their coming and going/ or have a smart home system, you will not really know what that particular sitter is doing. I rater our sitter last year a 5-star but that was BEFORE I had my smart home system. Last week when I sued the same sitter, gave her the same time for meal plans (early morning feedings) (4-5 PM dinner), visits 3-4 per day, I had my video camera and lock system show that she averages 5-7 minutes per visit (this is with 2 dogs). Had to text her to see if she was ever going to come on some mornings, did not show ups to around noon on some days. Most likely my review will not show up on rover as a poor review as all you see is the 5 star ones. She actually had asked me if she could have her boyfriend do one of her visits for her, someone I and my dogs never met. My wood floor was ruined due to her timely visits and the one dog having accidents. If you need further info regarding this visit, texts I received from the sitter, her excuses and so on, I will gladly share. Just warning you really check out your dog sitter before leaving them with someone. This particular dog sitter lady goes my Juliana M of Macomb, MI

When they returned 3 hours later she took the keys away and kicked them out. They had set up shop selling drugs from my home. ROVER said they were not responsible because it was an independent contractor! She had all 5 Stars are you Freaking kidding me? THIS COMPANY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR DOGS! STAY AWAY!

I've been working for Rover since the beginning of this year, and have had issues the entire time. Rover takes way too much from both the client and the pet sitter. I essentially did 2 dog walks for free, when it was my time, gas, and work that earned that money. They claim it's for their 24/7 service fee, but I have yet to ever need to contact them while caring for a pet. And if there was an actual emergency, I would definitely contact an emergency vet and their owners before even considering contacting Rover. They are unhelpful and do no care about the clients or the sitters. Would not recommend Rover to anyone. In fact, I'd recommend you not use Rover for any needs. As a sitter, you barely get any jobs that stick. I've been contacted 5 times within 5 months, and only 1 of those actually worked out. 1 was a scam. 2 got their friends to do it, and the last was canceled before I could accept. I've gotten other clients from recommendations from the one client I did score. Several of those potential clients complained about Rover on their end too. Not a good company.

The second time I used my Rover sitter, I picked up my two pups. One had the beginnings of an eye infection in both eyes and the other had an abrasion on his chin, constant licking and jaw problems. Took both pups to the vet the next day. Both were put on antibiotics. Contacted Rover sitter who couldn't tell me who to contact, etc. Then he wrote me another text, asking for vet costs. He denied my bills (not that I asked him to pay them), saying other dogs tear up his yard and house, and it's part of the package. He also said my pups were sick when I dropped them off probably, as they didn't have problems at his house. How in the world can you not see yellow bacteria coming out of both eyes? I emailed Rover twice before they responded and now will only look at my claim if my vet bills are over $250. Terrible customer service and I will not use this sitter again. I even gave his pup a bag of rawhide sticks and took a baby present to his newborn baby. So much for my kindness. I get 2 sick pups in return. I had pictures and video of my pups but they didn't seem to care that my pups were hurt. Run!

In 2019 I signed up for Rover. They did a background check and I was good to go. With each year my income doubled. I had nothing but 5 star reviews from every single customer. I live in Louisiana, an area that was impacted hard by hurricane Ida. Since We are allowed to have personal customers, I began giving services to pets. Who've been displaced from the storm. One individual dropped her dog off. Agree to pay $15 a day for one month. The owner never paid and never picked up her dog after 5 attempts to contact her.
I placed the dog in alternative housing. I kept the dog 97 days, waiting for her to get her dog. 2 weeks after I place the dog. She showed up to my home looking for the dog. She then posted falls, veragatory statements and tags myself and rover in the posts. Rover then requested second background check. Which they made sure I did not pass even though I had no changes. They deactivated my account. I have been struggling with them for over a year now to reactivate me.
I'm still doing pet sitting on my own but rover was half of my entire income. Pet sitting is what I do for a living. It is my full-time job, not a side hustle. I take very much pride and what I do. Rover fired me with no explanation and no consideration for the circumstances.
The person who abandoned their dog was never even a rover customer.
I don't know how I will support my 2 kids. I'm a single mother.

I've done some dog sitting through rover and they are honestly the worst to work with. They take a huge cut out of what you get paid. For that reason I will usually offer to go through venmo or cash so that I can afford to give my clients a better discount. I leave it completely up to the client though, and if they prefer to go through rover I'll do that without being pushy. Most recently, however, I did a drop-in visit and rover sent the payment to the completely wrong paypal account. So when I contacted them because I hadn't received the payment they just said that they can't cancel a completed transfer and to contact paypal about it. I already had contacted paypal and all they said was that they hadn't received anything. Obviously, because it wasn't sent to the correct account. So basically rover won't own up to or do anything to fix their mistake. They've already taken out their big chunk of the payment and they're cheating me out of the money I earned. Complete trash.
I will add though, a lot of these reviews are bad reviews of the sitters themselves, which honestly would probably deter me from using rover if I was new to it. However, the sitters profile should include ratings from verified stays, and if those reviews are good then you're probably safe to move forward with having them watch your pet. Also I would always suggest doing a meet and greet, because usually you should be able to tell if the person is sketchy just by meeting them.
