“A Fun Site for Movie Fans”

Sarah M.
6/19/20

This isn't a place for breaking movie news or long-form journalism. What it is, is a passionate and active fan community. The "SR Originals" are my favorite. The writers on this site often find ways to write about shows and movies from angles I never thought of.

“Spammy entertainment site that doesn't credit sources”

Ss S.
3/7/24

Overall entertainment sites in general have ads running on their site, but Screenrant makes the experience impossible for the user. The pop-up video ads are more noticeable on mobile. The other experience to share is that they do tend to not source where they get an exclusive. Sometimes they do which seems to be other sites owned by the same media company, but otherwise no credit is given to the original source. That is a sneaky practice and contributes to mis-information.

I read one of ur lists and that's when I lost respect completely. Ur list on character way more powerful than sasuke and naruto was dumb, poorly written and downright wrong. I felt like ur writer hadn't watched a single episode of naruto before even drafting the list. A big disapointment. Try and correct it.

It's not a coincidence the videos are 10+ minutes long. It's so they can throw more ads on them. But that results in videos that just draaaaaaaaaaag AND their conclusions aren't even accurate. Seriously, STAY AWAY. The only reason it doesn't have 0 stars is because of Ryan George's Pitch Meeting videos that are worth 5 stars. So when I decide to give SR 1 star, you can tell just HOW LOW the rest of the quality on this site it -,-

Hi Nicolai, glad you enjoy Ryan's videos. We love them too. As for the other videos, YouTube has changed their algorithms repeatedly - and recent changes favor longer content. It's not that we want to put more ads in them. You can see the same shift a lot of creators had to make around the same time. We're always reinventing the YouTube channel and trying to make it the best it can be - and I'll take your feedback to the team.

They post NOTHING significant whatsoever
Their articles lack even an ounce of research
It just truly baffles me how their site is still up, everything is so heavily biased
Their lists are as bad as their uniformed articles
Please, just some advice from me to you, do everyone a favour and delete the site

Thumbnail of user benk63
Ben K. – ScreenRant Rep

Hi Vana, appreciate your feedback. There are definitely infotainment articles on the site that are, by design, supposed to be fun not hard-hitting editorials but there's also a lot of content on the site that is heavily researched and intended to provide a deeper dive for those who want it. I'd encourage you to check out our Interviews tab and SR Originals section for that kind of content. I apologize but we won't be deleting the site.

This website does not pay it's freelance writers, as a former worker they put money in your face on what you COULD earn, but they don't communicate how they will pay you. Even in the training course you had writers trying to reach out to management on WHERE THEIR PAY WAS. They will fire their writers for asking about how they will get paid as they leave it very vague and do not communicate a method with their freelancers.

They overload work on their writer forcing them to do all the work of a publisher, editor, and writer, essentially forcing low-quality articles. The "editors" do not edit that's all up to the writers.

The next time you read one of their articles, remember that they scammed the writers to do it for free.

Thumbnail of user benk63
Ben K. – ScreenRant Rep

Hey Ryan, I'm not sure what that the situation was here but we 100% do not fire writers for asking about pay. Paying writers for their work is important to us and not something we are cavalier about. You're welcome to reach out to me and I'll look into your specific situation.

Stories are half baked easily debunked sad excuses for literature. They have little evidence and should not be looked to for any source of information.

Thumbnail of user benk63
Ben K. – ScreenRant Rep

Hi Nicolay, I'm not sure what exactly your experience was - but we're not aiming to be a literary site. Our goal is to bridge the gap between hardcore film lovers and casual moviegoers. We write a lot of explainers, editorials, and news - but we've never positioned ourselves as literary.

I thought ScreenRant was fairly okay before, but at least as it exists today, it is of fairly dubious quality content at the very best. Many of its articles these days are nothing but: "It's wrong to think of this character or that character as anything but villainous" or "These moments in these movies are not acceptable today".

Dozens of users on sites such as Reddit have also highlighted the apparently low quality of ScreenRant articles nowadays, and how unconfirmed rumors and poorly sourced fan theories are often used to write articles to generate more views -- or which actors on some TV shows have a worse reputation than others (one article mentioned how "it has been said" by certain seemingly unnamed peoples that an actress "can be rude" at conventions). A bit ironic that so many writers at a site who constantly write about things being "offensive" do not seem to hesitate when viciously attacking, labeling or smearing other individuals quite regularly.

With all due respect, from my personal impression, some of their articles seem more like high school girls' high-strung social media rants rather than truly legitimate and valid criticism of any piece of art or entertainment. Please, for the sake of us all, do a little better, ScreenRant, and try to re-evaluate and improve your standards.

Opinionated filth, which attempts to be humourously clever as it's fails dismally in disparaging various TV and Film icons. Funny it ain't! And rationale is near non existent!

These bloggers do nothing but "write" about speculations and theories. Most of the time they are completely wrong. What drives these people to blog such absurdities? It's just full of garbage.

Not much serious reporting going on here, they appear *******@FilmClickbate on a regular basis which says a lot. There youtube stuff can be okay at times, but mostly just filler.

Thanks for the feedback Dean. We've definitely been trying to dial-back the way our articles were presented on social. To be fair, we appear less frequently on@filmclickbait than we used to!

This site is some of the laziest, most opinionated and biased clickbait around. It's like someone paid the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons to write badly written hateful articles on everything. Expect to read gems like "DC MOVIES ARE BAD BECUZ THEY'RE DARK - DERP" and "FANS HAVE FORGIVEN GEORGE LUCAS".

Just absolute gutter level YouTube-like commentary dressed up as journalism. Avoid.

Thumbnail of user benk63
Ben K. – ScreenRant Rep

Hello Peter, I'm surprised by the two articles you highlight here. In general, our team is pretty supportive of the DCEU and the darker tone. We were one of the only sites reporting on the Snyder Cut - and, if you listen to our most recent podcast, are all eager to see the Snyderverse continue. I'm also unsure why writing an article highlighting how some fans have grown to appreciate George Lucas more (after beating him up for a decade after the prequels) in recent years would be considered hateful.

Pretty much what everyone else is saying. I look at mostly the DC Marvel stuff. The biggest thing that gets me a lot is the the dissing of Superman. 15 reasons this character is better than Superman, Superman can't beat these 10 villains, how you gonna list certain villains when Superman hasn't fought them?! But my biggest peeve was the belony they pulled with Man of Steel Superman and CW's Supergirl saying she's superior for really bogus bullspit reasons. Just uugh wtf are you people on?

Thumbnail of user benk63
Ben K. – ScreenRant Rep

Hi Dominic, sorry to hear you're upset about our Superman content. Superman is my personal favorite superhero and I loved Man of Steel. No one article on the site is site "canon". We allow writers with different perspectives to share their take - some are better than others but we're not dissing Superman on the whole. If anything, we've been some of the biggest supporters of releasing the Snyder Cut (and did loads of exclusive reporting on that prior to its confirmation) largely because we are massive fans of the Big Blue Boy Scout.

Inaccurate and click-baity. Screenrant are clearly more interested in $#*!ting out new articles and content quickly than they are about the quality and accuracy of it.

Hi Nathan, sorry you feel this way. We are proud of a lot of the content we create and aim for the highest possible accuracy. That said, it'd be lying if I claimed things don't slip through the cracks from time to time. If there was an article that you felt was particularly inaccurate, feel free to reach out to me and I'll look into it.

Let's start with the goods: Screenrant pays their writers. IGN is already losing here. Until you realize this is the only good this company does. Other than that, most of the articles are distasteful lies, they spoil shows and movies in their own titles which isn't good when it shows up in people's notifications, and and some articles just have horrible opinions/facts everyone already knows they use for clicks. Like, just today, and the inspiration for making this review, I found an article talking about how no one knows Goku's real name. They even put in parenthesis (& It's not Karkarot). You click on the article expecting to read something you've never known, like maybe Goku was mixed up with a kid named Kakarot on accident or something, but no. It's just the $#*! about Goku being based on and named after Sun Wukong which is something EVERY fan knows. And I can guarantee you they didn't even figure this out themselves. It probably only took them 20 seconds of research for an article that a lot of Dragon Ball fans will probably fall for and the person who wrote it will probably make some bank, which is actually the $#*!ing worst. I hate it so $#*!ing much.

I used to work for Screen Rant, so I have first hand experience witnessing their decline. From the standpoint of the reader, the site actually has solid news coverage, attracting exclusive interviews with big name celebs like The Rock. What ruins Screen Rant is that their news coverage isn't popular enough to sustain them, so in the last few years they turned to doing listicles to boost the clicks they get. And to their credit, the plan was successful. But the problem is, the listicles have now become the focus of the site, and the news has taken a backseat.

As someone who wrote for them, I can tell you that the editors don't care what the readers think. They advised us writers on numerous occasions to just not read the comments so we wouldn't have to see negative feedback. If you criticize them, the editors dismiss you as a baseless hater.

Screen Rant has continued to struggle even with their listicles, so they've slowly ramped up the workload for the writers, and delved into sleazier topics to get attention. It's not uncommon to now see articles about sexualized superheroes, celebrity drug scandals, and other tabloid quality writing. It doesn't even pay well anymore since they have repeatedly slashed the pay for writers. At this point, I'm glad I'm gone from there because the whole vibe behind the scenes is that Screen Rant is a sinking ship.

There are so many better news sites out there, so support them instead. Don't give your attention to Screen Rant now that they have devolved into shameless clickbait. They are unprofessional and not worth your time.
