“A great site for code help and answers”

Talia B.
11/15/15

Ignore the 1 and 2 star reviews for this site. They are from people who don't want to bother searching for their answer, or doing any legwork of their own to find it. The rules SO enforces actually help make the site a better resource... which is exactly why SO is at or near the top for most coding related searches... a little understanding can go a long way.

First of all you will get downvote because you are not using English, not even mention other questions that looks simple, it doesn't show the downvoter's name Secondly all the questions, comments and answers in it are useless and worthless, all are $#*!ed students who consider themselves as some computer genius, if you have a job and you still hang around in this site you should get fired

Rather than some people at Stackoverflow AI doesn't judge your questions or, worse, make you feel like a complete idiot for asking.
It just provides you with code that can either help you to find the right direction or solve your coding problem right away.

Are you guys a mind reader? Just kidding. Your reviews is just exactly what I'm thinking about SO. Many coffee and pasta answer from the software lib/documentation e. G Flask and Django get high scores, while the exact answer which save your headache sometime got less or even zero point.

A lot of beginner level questions in newest directions (ML, AI, image processing) simply cannot have a "minimal" code. However, moderators ban it left and right together with the users, though most of them, I believe, simply do not know the field. There must be a change of policies, otherwise this resource will lose its appeal for anyone but pro users.

I asked just how to make a verified badge like youtube has one, and it got closed! Also this is the first ever question that I'm putting there! Also it got downvoted for no reason! So people... don't waste your time on that website!

Tip for consumers:
Please beware about the site, because it's not friendly at all.

Don't waste your time asking questions on this site. You will jump through hoops trying to post a question that will pass the moderators' silly rules and then get down-voted for something like "not enough research" when the down-voter has no way of knowing how many hours you have already put into your research. You can learn a little by searching on this site, but don't bother becoming a member.

These people don't know what they're doing and transparently reflects on them personally. They sloppily write up anything that they believe has minor relevance to their members questions. They focus on points when they claim the site is suppose to have accurate answers to all programming questions, pretending to be knowledgeable when more than half of their solutions don't actually work. I've tested them out myself. If you wanna be an amateur, this is the place to be, otherwise I'd seek actual professional help for your programming advice. Big waste of time and highly recommend you find assistance elsewhere. This site is doing more damage to the programming society than helping it.

There needs to be an alternative. So often high ranked people intentionally team up to destroy the accounts of new on-the-rise accounts out of pure jealousy. Use quora or this site if you must. But you have been warned

Its alright for beginner programmers if you know what you're looking for and how to ask the question. I rarely have to ask questions myself, a quick google search brings up StackOverflow and some decent answers. The problem is that it might not be up to date, considering programming languages and practices change quite often. It would be naive to expect good answers all the time, maybe people are not keen on doing everything for you and are just giving tips.

I submitted a functional answer and a 'moderator' deleted it for no reason. I shared my experience with the support team and they came with "New answers are expected to contribute something substantial not already covered in previous answers, which yours does not. Therefore, it has been deleted."

This obviously didn't make any sense because the same thread has new answers that "don't contribute something substantial not already covered".

StackOverflow is not a welcoming community for new devs to contribute and grow in, the community is hostile and the moderators are essentially dictators who can do whatever they want knowing that the support team at StackOverflow will do nothing about it.

If you are looking to hire devs using StackOverflow, expect someone to bring in the same hostile culture into your company.

Possibly the worst website and customer service on the internet - joke of a company with no respect, no intelligence and no idea of how the law works. Ignorant, obnoxious geeks with too much time on their hands (such as 'animuson': http://stackoverflow.com/users/*******/animuson). They refuse to delete questions belonging to the poster despite it being illegal so they're being taken to court.

It has become a running joke to downvote all new questions. High-effort, well formatted, non-duplicate submissions with relevant code are taken down almost instantly. Nothing gets answered but sarcastic comments are guaranteed. The website no longer fulfils its intended purpose and frankly does not deserve to stay in business.

Some complain because they don't know the first thing about software development and ask something stupid like "how do I write a website"? This is not a place for people who need handholding- it is for professionals. If you know what you're doing and want to ask a technical question (how do you do X with Y technology)- people here are eager to help. That said, it is all user-contributed, so don't expect a prompt reply. It's best when you search and find your question has already been asked and answered.

Great source for programming answer on just about any language, however, if you are just starting to learn programming I would not advise coming to this site to post any form of question. The community is not welcoming, granted there are few that are willing to help, but the vast majority take pride in berating the post owner.

It takes far too long to find the nuggets of great information and examples that some members post - you have to wade through a morass of homework requests and many established members not answering, but having debates about how the question should be worded - neither are helpful.

The site is not recommended to participate in and not really that useful as a resource - there are far better sites (e.g. Android Developers; Python.org; DataCamp etc).

Many established members see it as their site and have little to no tolerance for anyone who thinks differently. The same applies to the other Stack Exchange sites (particularly Physics and Academia).

Tip for consumers:
Don't - there are a lot better and credible sites.

I asked just a question about possible little task automation! Also this is the first ever question that I'm putting there! Also it got downvoted for no reason! Also my question was edited quickly (removed the word PLEASE - I wanted to be polite). I also received a comment from someone (extremely high reputation person). Comment content: link to a basic instructions - no any answer to my quiestion. A YES or NO would be just fine for me. So people... don't waste your time on that website!

This is the worst channel I have ever seen, even if it is allowed I can give - to the power of infinity.
The admin is very rude and removes any question which is asked by me. I know they might not know the answers and feel ashamed and removes the questions.

I asked a question about a topic. This was my first question. I made a post with my error message and all of my code. It got downvoted and closed because they didn't had enough information.
I wanted to submit another question but now I am blocked for a day to submit questions.

I won't recommend StackOverflow for beginning developers since they are too strict to me.

As some have stated, their site is or has become a site for tech snobs.

From the beginning, you are limited in what you can do and if you find a question similar to your own, you are unable to make any comments asking people about your specific problem. So you make your own question and then they claim that you have duplicated the question, when the previous question didn't address your specific issue.

If you ask a question and it isn't formatted perfectly, they will refuse to help you. Just stay away from this site.

If you try to ask a real question that can't be searched by the internet, it gets deleted. If the moderator friends are online, they jump on the down vote wagon on top of it.

You can't ask a question unless its a question they want answered on the site.

Its over censored that way.

Some solutions they come up with are weak, and it seems like its been seeded with weak code so your stuff gets hack or make it more hack-able.

The people spent more time policing my mistakes in the way I wrote the question than actually trying to help.

The only answers I got were being told to not use bold, not use caps, pointing out irrelevant pieces of my question although the questions was quite clear at the top.

Useless!

After searching and searching for a solution i found a snippet that solved my problem. The issue here at first was that the snippet was not working and to one that provided the snippet never responded to the people asking what was wrong with the snippet.

So i thought let me contribute back and told them there was a small mistake in the code that caused the snippet/solution from working and posted it then with the code that works.

Not even 30 minutes later a $#*!ed moderator came bye and deleted my post. That i should have responded on the thread instead of a new reaction what is not even possible of the stupid blocks and restrictions you have.

The idea of stackoverflow is great but the fact of those restrictions and those dump $#*! moderators it makes a place that you don't want to contribute at!

Stack overflow deletes my questions every time, saying I need to put more details when in fact I put pictures, and explain very clearly. They just don't want to say they don't have an answer. They have truly fell off.

I was a beginner with a question, and most responses were about how I had an awful question and how I needed to change my tittle, which i did to try and please people (it didn't work btw) but still within 30 minutes my question got taken down. I tried finding solutions online and this was my last resort, but instead of getting help I was meet with rude people who criticized everything but the one thing I needed help on.
