I found tax act to be extremely difficult to use. Several times it logged me out or I logged out and then it asked me to do a new return each time. It took three hours to complete which normally takes me about 1-1/2 hours to complete with all the logouts and asking me to renter information. When I finally finished all my information I initially chose pay for fee with refund which tax act wanted to charge me 54.99 on top of the 40.00. I ended up not paying for it with my refund and paid from my credit card. Buyer beware do not choose "Pay from my Refund". So glad I am finished.

Less known but solid income tax program
February 12, 2022

I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site.

TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to.

TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry.

They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me.

TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary.

Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.

What is "2020 Tax Return Online All Inclusive" for $134.95? I started with deluxe! Now being charged for something I cannot even find on Google! It is nowhere located in their product offerings... A Google search returns nothing... I was expecting to pay the deluxe charge and when I was done, actually I could get by with the free since I don't need many forms. All Inclusive? WTH?

We have two small partnerships associated with our business. Unfortunately one download of TaxAct is good for only one partnership return. There is no way to create multiple returns, except to buy another copy, which I did but... the program does not allow two versions on one computer. A return that would have taken me two hours to complete by hand has sucked up my entire day and now I have to find another computer to start over. Also, customer service wait time has run from 4 hours yesterday (with never a call back) and over one hour wait today for call one which said I would be fine to download another copy and another over one hour for call two which said I'd need to use a second computer. I'm looking for something else next year.

Price Gouging
February 20, 2018

I have been using Taxact for years without any problem. Until this year, I was a strong advocate. Despite inflation plus plus price increases year on year, I found them good value. That goodwill disappeared this 2017 tax year with the restructuring of their packages and the need to pay $15 extra for my wife's schedule C. The overall cost almost trebled although they did concede a discount when I called ( 25 minute wait) resulting in only slightly more than doubling.

For folks with basic no-frills needs there are now better very cheap choices including the IRS's own E-File - etax.com - and freetaxusa.com.

I will see what happens next year but based on past experience and the voluminous lousy feedback online, my loyalty is shot!

Do better if you can!

DO NOT USE TAX ACT!
April 20, 2022

It's rejected 5 times asking for security proof which I provided correctly, each time, even had my Daughter try and still rejected. They didn't mind charging me $43 though. Should not charge till it's accepted.

2012 Software made calculation errors (adding when should have subtracted, failed to copy numbers from one form to another). After they finally fixed it, I e-filed my return -- and then received a "late filing" penalty from the state because they didn't receive one of the forms even though I had a confirmation from TaxAct that they were sent. TaxAct said, "our accuracy guarantee covers only bad calculations, not e-file problems" and then stopped returning my phone calls. Use other software or even paper and a calculator -- this company is a joke!

I was trying to print review copies and then final copies of e-filed s corp returns. I kept getting a script error so I called for help. I was told to change a setting in my internet options and told that would take care of it. He then hung up. I finished doing what he said which wiped out my desktop. Folders with hundreds of pictures, worksheets, letters are now gone. I have checked the hard drive to see if they were moved or something but they are gone and I am MAD! Do not use this software!

TaxAct switched the type of tax preparation plan I was using through them because I sold my home. There was absolutely no difference nor any screens asking me about my home sale yet they charged me for the more expensive product. I called customer service three times and reps were unable to help. One rep kept yawning and talked a mile a minute. Warning, TaxAct will try to sell other products to you at the end and you need to be careful what you click on because they will switch the phrasing as you click through saying "no thanks." Stay away from TaxAct.
