TaxACT has a rating of 1.3 stars from 139 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about TaxACT most frequently mention customer service, last year, and federal return problems. TaxACT ranks 72nd among Tax Preparation sites.
I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site. TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to. TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry. They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me. TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary. Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.
This company needs to be suited they will take your money an not help you file are help on your taxes. Watch what I say tax act count your days we all gonna get ate money back an then some. Y'all gonna be just like turbo tax when they got taken to court!
I use to like TaxACT, it was truly low cost. It changed hands like 6 or 8 years ago. At first the change had minor price increase. Slow but surely over the years it went from $12.95 for federal and $17/19 for state to 2020 pricing of $48.95 for federal and $54.95 for state. Ridiculous. Granted I now have a few 1099div forms but come on. Especially now most everyone takes standard deduction and most itemizing deducting was eliminated. So to justify their price hike they now have a "xpert help", and some other bells whistles that are useless to me. Bottom line $103 to edible fed and state 2020 and 2010 was about $35 or so.

I have been using tax act for many years. I normally let it bring my prior years info forward an then use a manual selection of the desired forms I need rather than letting it ask all the questions. It seems this year there have been a lot of changes. I don't use the questionnaire format. I just go to the actual forms I need. I probably wouldn't be using it if I had to follow the format of a new user. Also the price has risen considerably which is a negative in my mind and makes me consider not usi g it in the future

Have used this site for years like most people. As it was convinient and easy, now they are charging 37.00 to file state taxes, last year none. Also they imported a schedule c which i do not need anymore but cannot find how to get it off, and i cannot file my taxes until i upgrade to freelancer instead of 1040 because of the schedule c i cannot get rid of. Ugg this was great 4 years ago, i now have to wait 45 minuted to get support, and theres is no phone number to be found, you have to search and search. Theres no real great support here at all. And i thought i was getting ahead this year. Now i have to go elsewhere to file taxes today another site another hassle.
This is the 5th year i used taxact.com to file but also the 2nd year they won't file it and won't tell me why. Last year i called in and they made me re-do it not answers as to what was wrong. This year same thing but when i emailed the online support team they only sent me a step by step video. So i went over it and saw i did it all right. So i emailed back and said so and i got a rude email back from the team support guy ryan that said i need to learn out to do my own taxes because its not his job. When all i said in the email was im confused everything is right what do i do
This is not a company I would ever use again. I waited 7 months for my refund and never got it bc tax act didn't do their apper work correct according to the IRS and when I called. Customer service they said to call IRS and wouldn't help me
Tip for consumers:
Don't use this

Tax act is a tax software
The software is unbearable, it will not connect and allow for you to enter your information. The links are consistently slow or broken and you have to keep reconnecting. It will take forever to complete my tax returns.
The worst site to use when you have a deadline. Couldn't log in, had to create a new password about 6 freakin times. Logs you out randomly when you're almost towards the end AND NO LIVE CSR to ask questions like "why the F am I getting logged off"... the absolute worst. Go with turbo tax
If there was a NEGATIVE star rating... thats what I would give. Spent a few days inputting data for a 2020 Individual and completed and actually submitted an efile for a 2020 S Corp. Paid the $124.95. A pop up came up and said it could take up to 2 hours to process. NEVER PROCESSED. LOST. THEY REFUNDED ME TODAY (Nov 8).
There was no advance notice or any post notice that as of today we are archiving and closing out 2020. So its a guessing game to waste your time. Pretty sketchy and rinky dink operation for a big software company.
BEWARE.
Save yourself some time and use someone else
I have phone log. Screenshot of website and soon the refund available to back up this review
2020 they changed their software to the not so good. Couldn't e-file my taxes had to mail them in and was told all I had to do is mail in the attachment that was required. I was giving the run around for 3 hours and charged for other services that wasted that departments time and mine then had to be transferred back to taxact customer service to be told I don't know what to do,,, (wow)... I've been doing taxes with taxact from 2015 and was told for not being satisfied that they would refund $80, but that didn't happen. They did tell me that they had trouble placing the refund and I may have to call back. Called back talked to a rude person named Chris and then he hung up on me and was not given a chance to do the survey at the end of call! Go figure I guess Chris didn't what me to do the survey. I guess I'll wait for his manager to call me?
The most worthless program ever invented by man! If you can get through the ridiculous amount of security and the standards of password protection, pins, safewords, having to redo your password every 20 seconds then forgetting what you changed it to just to have to reset and start over and finally get into the program just to download last years taxes. Oh yes you can download them. Just can't open them without a third party program that charges $2.99 so you can read a file that is YOURS! Use Turbotax! Easier, Simplier, faster! I use to love Taxact, but it's just a flipping joke anymore. They are good with security though, hell good luck getting into your own data without having to hire a dozen stallons, 10 monkeys, and a dancing gorilla wearing a special tutu to access your data!
Not user friendly, wasted an hour of my life trying to file my taxes this year since Turbo Tax decided to cancel their free filing service. Found this website on the IRS.gov page, said it is FREE for BOTH federal and state, then when I go to submit not only does it say it will charge me $40 but then it also says it cannot "e-file" my taxes. Literally wtf. I exited out, complete waste of time, and will probably just pay for Turbo Tax because I don't have time to deal with this all over again, plus Turbo Tax was at least very straightforward- this website was not.
I've used TaxAct for years. Each year it gets worse in terms of price, usability and confidence. IMO as the price increases the quality decreases. If you live in NJ and have tax exempt investments DO NOT BUY TAXACT 2017. It does not calculate the NJ taxed versus tax exempt income correctly. If I don't use the satisfaction guarantee, it will only be because I don't have time to fight it out with them. Regardless, I will not be using TaxAct any more.
I found tax act to be extremely difficult to use. Several times it logged me out or I logged out and then it asked me to do a new return each time. It took three hours to complete which normally takes me about 1-1/2 hours to complete with all the logouts and asking me to renter information. When I finally finished all my information I initially chose pay for fee with refund which tax act wanted to charge me 54.99 on top of the 40.00. I ended up not paying for it with my refund and paid from my credit card. Buyer beware do not choose "Pay from my Refund". So glad I am finished.

Tax Act
TaxAct got top reviews on Google. So I spent hours doing my simple, single, return for FREE, but it would not let me state that N. H. has no income tax so impossible to proceed to the 'submit Federal return' button. Then it changed my standard deduction to itemized deductions that I could not uncheck, which made me now OWE $$. The 'Back" button is useless, you're stuck on a page that requires payment. NEVER USE TAXACT!
I have been using Taxact for quite some time. This is the worst experience I have had with them. Previous returns can no longer be imported unless you pay $14.95. I kept getting kicked when I hit the BluPrint screen which is another service they want you to pay for. I selected no and that is when I got kicked out. When I tried to go back in, my login/password came up as invalid. I called customer service only to be disconnected when they could not handle any more calls. When I finally spoke with someone, they me to call back and press 3. I spoke with another person who told me come back and press 5. Then I spoke with another person who told me send an email. I have not heard anything. I had to keep calling back because they are unable to transfer calls to other deparments. I WILL NEVER USE TAX ACT AGAIN!
FREE FREE FREE Good luck with that! I live in Florida so I just have to file a federal return. Had to pay $9.95 to upgrade to Basic + to be able to import 2017 return. OK
I could live with that. Now to print your Return you need to upgrade to TaxAct Deluxe
And That will cost you $29.95. I have been using TaxAct to do my taxes for years. It used to be a good company now they are a SCAM Bait and Switch. Buyer Beware!
I have been using Taxact for the past several years and it has been getting progressively worse. This year (TY2016) is by far the worst. This is my last time using Taxact. It has a hangup on American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit. It says you cannot claim both but it requires you to enter your education expenses for both. It then will not let you e-file because it thinks you are trying to claim both credits. A good tax program would be able to discern which tax credit would give you the best tax refund.
I used to love Tax Act; now they are garbage. Not until they very end did they tell me it would cost over $100 to file my taxes while I was under the impression it would be free. But I got over and was willing to pay. That's when the really smacked me in the face. Turns out AFTER paying, they have a few more questions and reveal to me that two of my tax forms can't even be filed with their service THAT I ALREADY PAID FOR.
Straight up a scam!
MASSIVE BAIT AND SWITCH crooks. Used them last year, taxes were simple and didn't make much money. At the very end, after all the work is done, the free price jumped to almost $90, no explanation, just said my very simple return didn't qualify for free. Don't waste your time or money.
Had used TaxAct successfully for several years until my 2016 filing. Submitted my return and was told by the company that the IRS had accepted my return and the amount I owed would be deducted from my bank account.
When the IRS payment did not show up on my bank statement, I eventually reached an IRS operator who told me my return had not been received. She also mentioned that I was not the first TaxAct user to contact her with this same problem and suggested I petition the IRS for an abatement.
From the start of that first call, it took 4 months to finally get my taxes paid and most of my penalties abated. Part of it was my fault for misinterpreting directions and part of it was the IRS whose instructions were out of date for the 2016 filing.
On the bright side, I now have my own personal IRS tale of woe!
I've always done my own taxes and have used Tax Act since it first appeared. It's been fine if you know what you're doing and don't have a complex return. Last year's version had a big price jump, which is understandable since it was still a bargain compared to Turbo Tax.
The 2017 version has already annoyed me, however. First, I discovered that I needed the "Freelancer" version since I have to complete a Schedule C. (They did give me the upgrade for free since I'm a long-time customer.) Next, I found a bug in my state's software. Then, I found the only support is via phone -- with a 40-minute wait time. There's no email support or any other way to report the bug. For this reason I wonder if I'll be using Tax Act next year.
Update 1/29/18: I found an email address for the marketing department right here on Sitejabber and sent an email asking to forward my issue to the tech department. It was indeed forwarded and I received a reply a few days later. Turned out there *is* a way to handle my issue, but it's in the *state* section, which I had to enter via a tab which I've never needed before. So, not a bug. Perhaps if I'd gone through the state interview the software would have addressed the issue. I still feel this should appear in the program's "help" file, but I'm upping my score from 3 stars to 4.
They aren't transparent about what you will need to file your taxes electronically and if you don't have all of that information like the amount of last year's AGI or PIN numbers or all sorts of other things then you spend the money and you really can't use the service... Also, they make it sound like they're recommended or approved by the IRS but they're not. If you go to the IRS website they have all sorts of free ways to file your taxes electronically and I used one and instead of getting $833 back as in what Tax Act was claiming they could get me, I got back $1,700! Don't use them! Go to the IRS website and use their free options.
Site ads say you can file ALL YOUR TAXES FOR FREE... When you get to try and print or file your State tax, they knock you with a $20.00 fee.
Customer service reads a script - "IF WE DIDN"T DO THAT, WE'D BE OUT OF BUSINESS".
1040.COM IS FREE...
Went thru T-Mobile to get Taxact service was a waste of time was on phone for 2o minutes they hung up on me never she never call me back and they have your number, someone else called about 20 minutes later,I already packed up my stuff and had other things to do, will never use there service again.
I've been using TaxAct for years and it's not only affordable ($25) including federal and state tax filing, but I was able to use it for my complex tax situation! Highly recommend
