I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site. TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to. TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry. They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me. TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary. Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.
This company needs to be suited they will take your money an not help you file are help on your taxes. Watch what I say tax act count your days we all gonna get ate money back an then some. Y'all gonna be just like turbo tax when they got taken to court!
Why can`t you delete something. Tax act stated that my property tax would give me a higher refund. Wrong, It reduced my refund by over $300.00. When i tried to delete and go back to standard It would not let me. This is not fair at all.
Deluxe plus State will not correctly calculate the HSA adjustment and the support phone that finally answers the worthless self help that is unable to understand plain English transfers you to the beginning of the recordings to start over, then hangs you on hold for 1 hr and 20 min. ( I finally hung up) If you contribute to an HSA, be very careful. It's hard telling what else they have wrong in this software and don't expect any kind of professionalism in getting assistance.
First of all their staff does not know or understand the tax act. Had capital loss and support did not know how to fill in the form.
Second of all, tried to prepare my return beginning of February. The tax forms I needed were not available. Supports answer was they did not know when they would be available. I have to file a foreign return. Cannot do so without my US return. I waited until the middle of March. Forms still not available. At this point went to another provider. Surprise all the forms I needed were available.
Many better providers with better support
Will never use again, after doing my return, which wasn't difficult, made me pay to be able to print it out, I was aware it would cost 46.95 was ok with that. But then to print state forms to mail, charged me another 55.00$! Big ripoff
I filed my taxes with TaxAct, paid $133 thinking I would get assistance if anything went wrong. The IRS rejected my taxes, Federal and State. I think because I got less in my retirement than I got last year or they needed some pin from 2019. I was thinking everything was going smoothly since the site had that I had filed the returns. I went to check the status when no funds were taken expect the $133 I paid them. I had to hunt through the site to find the returns had been rejected... no email, text, not obviously show on the TaxAct site. I tried to contact them and was told the experts were not available at 3:00pm. I requested a refund and without hesitation they said they would give me a refund. They need to take the site down if they can't do any better. Now I am really late and have to take my taxes somewhere else and probably will have to pay, not to mention the problems I now face with the IRS. Don't trust them with your taxes.
Tip for consumers:
There was no support after my refund was rejected. They did not even bother to notify me that the returns had been rejected.

Now called Fairview Taxi I will no longer be using this service due to the many horrible experiences I have had with most of the drivers; I gave them a chance. These men are rude savages, argumentative, unaccommodating (won't help with bags or anything). They have no education and I don't just mean schooling but everyday etiquette that one should learn at home. Last night was the last time this will happen to me! I cannot recommend this service and advise women especially not to use them for safety reasons.
I am disabled with no income, but had student loans discharged so had to file and wanted my little $63 NYS refund. Stuck with "This return does not qualify for e-filing." NYS requires that all returns prepared online are e-filed. I used TaxAct through the FreeFile program on NYC's free file site. So you would think it would fulfill the basic requirement of e-filing the return after an hour on the site.
Just did my 2013 taxes here.
I felt like I got scammed $14. I wasn't clearly notified that I was switching over to their "premium service". Did not give me a notification or a warning. They made me pay for it at the end of the filing. I paid because I didn't want the hassle of calling them and possibly start the whole thing over.
I will use another service next year.
2 stars because the usability of the website was decent, but no better than others I've tried such as TurboTax.
EDIT 2015 05 07: I used TurboTax last year and it was a breeze. I think they updated their site for this year and it's so much easier. I will go to them in the future.
TaxAct asked me if I received a third stimulus payment. I did not so I said no. Due to that response, I showed a $1,200 refund. I did feel a little uneasy about that and asked several people if they received a third stimulus payment, and they did not. I just received a letter from the IRS that the stimulus payment on my taxes was incorrect. Instead of getting a refund, I owe the IRS $300. I'm not upset about the money because I usually pay every year but TaxAct is suppose to have a guarantee.
I had no problem with the program and chose to file for free but after putting on all of my info... it was held hostage until I paid $52 bc I own a house that did not increase my return in any way. I didnt file any extra forms... but bc I am a home owner I can t print or file unless I pay... no thanks. Ill use another service but it wo uld have been nice to know before I wasted all that time
Last time i ever use tax act. I agreed to a 40 dollar charge for direct deposit. They charged me $109 and sent me a paper check. I've used tax act for years but this is just uncalled for. I guess its time to use turbo tax. All good things never last.
One star rating is a gift. I have used for a number of years. Despite some problems each year This year a disaster. Unable to sign in despite several attempts and changing logins and re-registering. Wasted two days trying to resolve. They charge a long distance call to talk. Waiting time was over an hour. By time I got a call back I had switched to Turbo Tax. A pleasnt, Tax Act is a disgrace. CAVEAT EMPTOR.
Awful service...cant get to anyone the recorded line resists to connect to anyone... it is like fast food in the worse customer service...do not recommend...the bigger they become the horrible service it becomes...
I've used TaxAct in the past, begrudgingly, but this year as I was logging into my old account, I got a "ERROR CODE 022 Username and password not found". I've logged in with the same credentials just last week, and I use a password manager. Verified the username was correct, then I tried to change my password. I figured I had the wrong password saved in my password manager, so I input the same one. It says that is my current password, and I have to select a new one! That was the current password! Something wrong on their end, but customer support does not respond.
I have all my details there, kind of worrisome to not be able to log in and to be provided with no support.
I have used TurboTax for many years. Last year I needed to file a return for my LLC. I was able to muddle through on TaxAct. Now I want to file for 2022, but the TaxAct Dashboard is terrible and after googling how to delete a new individual return it was very difficult to find the right menu listing "Actions" that was suggested. After searching through several screens I finally found it and was able to delete the 1040 that accidently was started. NOW, I have also been on hold for 20 minutes waiting to find out which option to select for doing a 1065 form and 8825 form for the LLC. There is nothing under the "self-employed" option to indicate I can file just those forms. So I tried to import last year's filed return (I did on TaxAct) and they say they cannot upload it.
This is beyond frustrating. I know that if I were to purchase the TurboTax software, it would give me everything I need. Goodbye TaxAct! And good riddance!

I am so unhappy with Tax Act this year. I have used it for years and got used to paying $19.99 to have my last year info imported and have the state done. This year it said I had to upgrade because we had $600 in a HSA. The total came to $40 for federal and state! Also, I noticed that our last year state refund was automatically added in as income. After I filed I did research on that and it should've only been entered if I itemized last year. SO FRUSTRATED this year! I just paid the stupid $15 to file the federal and I'll just do the state on the state's website. This is my last year using this.
I have been using Taxact for years and I've had no problems, it's easy for anyone to understand the program.
Have not received my taxes and it has been over 40 days. I understand that the CV19 virus has slowed productivity. I lost my job due to the virus and I was hoping that my tax return would would come in time to pay my bills. They should have a warning saying that they are experiencing difficulties and your tax return might take much longer. I've tried to get in touch with the workers of TaxAct but have been unsuccessful. They wouldn't even send my information to my email. You cannot explain this to the machine that they forward all of their customers to and when I ask to speak to a real person I get hung up on. Just seems to be an overall lack of effort at a time when things are tight and stressful. I hope this review can help someone that is desperate for money and is looking to ease that stress with their tax return. DO NOT file your taxes with TaxAct.
Each year with this business you never know how much you will be charged. On top of changing their prices every year, they charge you 5 different (5!) times to completely file your taxes. Once you file your taxes, tax act will set you in with a price and then bill you. From there if you want to print tour taxes they will charge you again and bill you (once each time for your federal and for your state) and then if you want to pay online you will also be charged a convenience fee (again separately for your federal and state). Once you pay to file you're pretty much forced to pay for all the subsequent features because you don't want to lose the money you already spent for them to file and are forced to pay for everything else. Predatory billing style in my opinion.
Ripped me off. They say you don't pay until the end, but then it forced me into paying. I lost $22 over this scam website. They also didnt have the proper way for me to deduct business expenses (Section 179), and so they showed my business income as almost $1k higher than turbotax. I don't like turbotax, but it's better than this scam.
In last February 7, in TaxAct home page the TaxAct Premire marked as $34.95. I started with TaxAct on line on the same day Feb 7,2021, and I printed TaxAct screen which shown the price $34.95. After start my 2020 tax return with TaxAct I verified the price it was $34.95. But Later when I tried to file the return the TaxAct charged me $64.95. I called support I was told the price was changed. This is not acceptable behavior. TaxAct using lower price got customer started using the TaxAct prepare the Tax return. When customer ready to file the tax return the customer was forced to pay high price in my case I was forced to pay twice the original price.
Filled out the forms and got to the the filing part and it asked a question that was not specific enough to answer. So i called and they said I have to pay for delux to talk to assistant. So i did. Then no one ever answered the phone. I called over and over for 6 hours. I went back and worked out the problem. But it wanted me to pay for delux again. I did that as well thinking they would fix the problem. So I paid to talk to assistant that does not answer the phone. Used them for many years. Looks like its time to move to another company for my taxes.
I will never use this site again. Shortly after starting to do my return it showed that I owed the state... a lot! This is weird because I have been getting money back... and now according to its figures, i owe... i went to Turbo tax and it was totally different and i WAS due money back... I DO NOT TRUST TAXACT ever again!
I selected the FREE federal return option with the $39.95 state option believing I would be charged $39.95. But when it was time for the payment page my total was $136 and change. I was never informed of the Protection Plus package that I was charged for. BAIT AND SWITCH! Based on this TaxAct has lost a long time customer dating back to 2008.
They do not let you know well into the Federal return that there is now a $20
Up-charge if you need to use Schedule C (including C-EZ). I do not like to be ripped off. I will use Turbo Tax from now on!
