“Less known but solid income tax program”

Jack C.
2/12/22

I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site. TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to. TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry. They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me. TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary. Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.

They aren't transparent about what you will need to file your taxes electronically and if you don't have all of that information like the amount of last year's AGI or PIN numbers or all sorts of other things then you spend the money and you really can't use the service... Also, they make it sound like they're recommended or approved by the IRS but they're not. If you go to the IRS website they have all sorts of free ways to file your taxes electronically and I used one and instead of getting $833 back as in what Tax Act was claiming they could get me, I got back $1,700! Don't use them! Go to the IRS website and use their free options.

Site ads say you can file ALL YOUR TAXES FOR FREE... When you get to try and print or file your State tax, they knock you with a $20.00 fee.

Customer service reads a script - "IF WE DIDN"T DO THAT, WE'D BE OUT OF BUSINESS".

We've used TaxAct for several years. This year, we owed over 7K on our Federal taxes and opted to pay by credit card, all of which is handled by the TaxAct site when you file your return. We completed the filing and the payment. When we printed our return and forms, they said we had submitted our payment. Nothing ever showed up on the credit card; it was never charged. Now the TaxAct site says we 'elected to pay at a later date.' This is absolutely NOT true. We will now have to pay a PENALTY because of this screwup, and TaxAct refuses to take any responsibility. And it is almost impossible to contact them to speak with a representative to try to fix the problem. In short, AVOID TAXACT!

Customer service for TaxAct is horrible! They told me I was accepted for a call back because the hood and my wait time was an hour and ten minutes before I could speak to a representative, I waited two hours and twenty minutes for this so call accepted call back and never received anything. I definitely won't be going through TaxAct for next years tax returns. Everything is just horrible, I can't recover my account from last year because I have a different number so I can't recover my account and instead of sending a reset or verification code to my email they send it to my old number. ‍ And it doesn't give you the option to pick which one you would like to send it to. It's such a hassle it's ridiculous. I'm sure they have long hold/ wait times because that's what people are calling about and they probably don't know how to handle the situation so they refer you to IRS.GOV, which I did to save myself sometime instead of holding for an hour or waiting two hours for a phone call that never comes.

I've used TurboTax for all returns in the past, but due to the number of ad and addons, I switched to TaxAct. This is the second year in a row where I have learned my federal return was rejected due to an issue with my PIN. There isn't a place to add the 6 digit PIN, only a place to create the 5 digit PIN. I am paying penalties for late returns because this software can't submit a return in the correct format. I've tried resubmitting with last year's AGI and the return is still rejected. JUST SAY NO to TaxAct. You will pay through the nose in the end.

I will never do this with tax act again. First I never received my federal, which was apparently supposed to come on a serve card. Which off the bat is stupid, they charge extra to put it in your bank account. Even if you are a day late they take $100 from your taxes! Then I tried to get ahold of a human that can help me, they did nothing but send me on a goose chase calling 5 different numbers back to back. Just for someone to tell me to sign up yet ANOTHER separate account. When I was done it did not tell me how much money was on the card so I had no idea if i was even getting my taxes. Now I can't get into a single one of those accounts and I can't get ahold of a human at all. The robot told me I have no money on my card when I should have $190 and let's not forget they already took $100 dollars of my $#*!ing money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY WITH THESE PEOPLE. They are very unprofessional, it is NOT simple at all.

I used TurboTax and TaxAct to compare and see what my full refund would be. TaxAct said I did not qualify for any of the child tax act credit even though I had a child in mid 2021 and the stimulus as well. TaxAct is a waste of time and money they WILL NOT get you your best refund.

Tax ACT. COM - I have been trying to use taxact.com to start my tax returns I used them in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 I used the free service. In 2007 I paid extra to have the availability to recall and import 2007 tax information and now for 2008 I can not get into my account. I have been filing the assistance need request and following the information while on the phone with the tech support and still I can not get the inforamtion or availability I paid for already in Jan. 2008. I have sent the request for the past two weeks and can not get a response from the owners of the site Tax act. Com I would advise to use the free service but not the paid service because you do not get the support and service promised after they receive your money. That part of the company is a fraud. The company is good with free only to set the consumer up for fraudualant guarentee in order to recieve a higher payment.

Do not use tax act to prepare your financial returns. They mislead self employed customers into believing that they have the capability to handle their financial reporting and then after you finish your tax return; tell you that you can't e-file because they don't have the necessary forms to complete the job if you have taken any distributions from a retirement account etc. So imagine, you've taken your time to prepare your return, paid the bill and realize there is nothing you can do with it if you print the return because the necessary tax forms never come in according to their timeline and they just keep saying they will get the forms any day; which never comes! Weeks later; you are struck with an incomplete return that you can not file because even the printed version requires you to have the appropriate retirement form prepared properly by a tax expert; TaxAct denies you a refund and you are left in a lurch to pay another tax preparation company to prepare the return. May I suggest TurboTax; no problems there! I have learned my lesson; I am done with TaxAct!

It shouldn't take much to log into an account on the road and download software, but TaxAct wouldn't let me do it. They couldn't correct the problems they had with my account and apparently didn't have my security questions synched withmy account. They didn't care that I was a customer for well over a decade,

I use CD's to load at home, but couldn't use them on tablet. So nothing better to do but flame at them for incompentency.

I paid for federal and state tax return prep. TaxAct informed me that my returns were not eligible for e-filing. This has never happened to me before. So I printed and mailed my federal tax return before the April filing deadline (it's now May). However, when I went to print my state tax return, Tax Act has a notice that the forms for filing are not available to print yet. So I cannot file yet. It is now May 19, which is four days after the tax filing deadline for my state. I check the online account regularly, but the forms are still not available. I prepared my return with plenty of time to file and already paid for my state taxes to be prepared-- but they're not done and I cannot print them. Can I get ahold of anyone to fix this? Nope! No email, no chat "after hours" (5 pm local). Paid for a service I have not received which could result in negative tax consequences for me. I've been using Tax Act for close to ten years- maybe more-- but I think this will be the last time. I'm a tax lawyer and I hate it when tax preparers pull this crap. Definitely not the first I've seen but the first time this particular service has done this to me.

Tip for consumers:
Bad customer service. Untimely preparation of state tax return which I already paid for.

TaxAct user for many years, the desktop software was 'formerly' fairly priced and worked perfectly.
This year however (tax year end 12. 31. 17), the company under new leadership, has become a 100% disaster.
The software would not work on two different computers, both meeting the technology requirements including Internet Explorer 11. (This browser is REQUIRED for a desktop application.)
The technology Customer Support is useless and frustrating.
The product pricing has increased remarkably, even charging on a per-form-basis ($21 extra for Sch C)... unbelievable.
The Customer Support can't even deliver on such a simply and reasonable request to "provide a receipt/paid invoice for eFiling fees, which were paid to TaxAct." No receipt, complete incompetence.
Unless you want to endure constant buggy software which fails with multiple script errors, avoid TaxAct.
After many years, I am done with this vendor, and the person wholly responsible is the Sanjay Baskaran. Blucora Inc needs to fire him.
It really doesn't get any worse than this, stay away!

03/15/2020 at 08:44:04 PM I finished filling out my small business return on TaxAct Online for Federal, and North Carolina Returns. They charged me $159.90. I followed their step by step directions, answered their step by step questions and they totally misled me to fill out the wrong forms. I e-filed using TaxAct thinking it was complete and correct because I am paying them to do this. However Federal rejected my return and state rejected my return because Federal did.

TaxAct does not have the proper forms, did not provide me the correct help and now I have to manually fill out the correct forms to mail in to amend my return. The proper form I was supposed to use was 1120S which TaxAct never provided or could be found when I tried to amend my return using TaxAct.

I did send an email to customer support on 3/15/20 and they never replied back. I also called on 3/16/20 at 7:30 pm and the customer service rep could not help me saying she had to transfer me to technical support, however I was THEN put on hold for another 15 minutes!

They did call me back and say that they are providing me a full refund. I won't know for sure until another 10 days when it is processed.

Have use tax act every year and never had a problem with the software I've never had a problem with paying their fees or fees are minimal. This year it wasn't TaxACT its Republic Bank & Trust that screwed me that's who handles Tax Act direct deposits. First they screwed up my direct deposit then they mailed my check to the wrong address then they made me wait 6 business days while I had to stop payment on the check then they tried to direct deposit my check again into a different account which was wrong now my check is lost in the mail. It's been 22 days and I still haven't received my refund. When you call Republic Bank and Trust their phone system gives you the run-around so long you could you get fed up and want to hang out but you just have to hang in there. However when you do get someone on the phone they're rude and unwilling to help. Late trying to blame all of the problems with the bad deposits and lost check on me when it was clearly their fault they mailed it to an address that I haven't had in 20 years. I never used Tax Act again simply because they use Republic Bank and Trust I used TurboTax next year. Tax Act software did a good job Republic Bank & Trust is the one that really screwed me no refund today day 23

Unaware, TaxAct Online had downgraded me from Premium filing (1040 with capital gains) to a simpler Plus filing (1040 with Schedule A and associated forms) for tax year 2016. I had been using TaxAct Online for at least 10 years. However, this year, TaxAct Online deleted my repeat-customer-guaranteed and locked-in $26.95 filing fee for Premium filing and charged me $40 for a simpler Plus filing. I had previously paid $16.95 or less for its Plus filing before using only once its Premium filing. I immediately telephoned TaxAct Online and reported the pricing discrepancy; the customer service representative lowered the Plus filing fee to $35, still above $16.95. After a day, I received a customer service representative emailed response; she lowered the Plus filing fee to $26.95, the previously guaranteed and lock-in Premium filing fee though I was using a simpler and less expensive Plus filing service. Since the higher pricing snafu is TaxAct Online mistake, "No, Thank you, TaxAct". Via an online search, I found many inexpensive filing services or free filing services with ads. One online filing service have no ads and offered everything that I needed at $0 cost. The only disadvantage at this competitor's filing service is that this year's tax data and info is not transferable to next year's filing. However, after completing TaxAct Online data input this year but surprised by TaxAct high regular pricing for a simple product, re-entering data on a competitor's online filing service is no biggie. Until TaxAct Online gets its act together, I would, and recommend that you, avoid TaxAct Online.

I have been using TaxAct for several years with no problems until trying to file a 2016 income tax return. I needed to claim a relatively obscure deduction and had to write something on the top of Schedule C. This meant I had to print off the forms which in itself wasn't a problem but resulting in meant being able to e-file the NY State tax return as I was manually filing the Federal. However TaxACT kept saying the NY return had to be e-filed, but wouldn't let me do it, as I wasn't e-filing the Federal tax return. When I did finally get a chance to print the NY return, which cost an extra
$ 25.00, it had written all over it, DO NOT FILE. Apparently the printed forms had not been approved by the NY Taxation Dept. I had paid $ 25 to print something that I could not use. This also stopped me e-filing the NJ Tax return.

They need to have a facility where words can be added to the top of schedule C, and also allow E-filing of State returns irrespective of whether the Federal return is filed manually.

I had to go and find printed forms on the internet that I could fill in and then post. What a nightmare. I will not be using TaxAct in future. I had pre-paid for the 2016 year, and also paid the $ 25 to print off something that was useless. What a big waste of money.

Verified purchase

Wish I had seen this site before I purchased. I need to file an Initial/Final return for a Grantor Trust. I saw TA recommended on some other sites because they have a product specifically titled "Trust and Estate." I bought the Download version. I don't really have the energy to go into everything that was bad about it, but the interview process was not very intuitive, if I clicked for Help I got a very basic sentence or 2 and a link to the IRS Instructions. I input a 1099INT that was mostly IRD, I feel like there should be a related Statement to explain where the "missing" interest is being reported but I could never find one in the Forms and the Interview did not ask. Program shuts down at random, sometimes it comes back and offers to continue where you left, sometimes not. And, last straw, I got up this morning and opened the program to find that all the work I had done to that point was gone, tried a Restore from Backup option and it said backup was unreadable. So I'll be doing the return all over again, but not with this POS. Ordering TurboTax Business today.

DO NOT use tax act they charged me $54.95 to pay for my $24.95 fee for TaxACT
Software if I did agree to it it was by mistake however if I understood clearly I would have never agreed to pay $54.95 for a $24.95 fee because it was to be taken out of my return this is totally ridiculous and dishonest and not right. I've been using text act for years and I've never experienced this because of this experience I will no longer use them just beware! FYI I contacted tax act twiceon January 30th 2022 at approximately 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and neither representative good help me this was within 2 hours of me doing my return again if I would have known they were going to charge me $54.95 for the tax act fee $ I would have paid the $24.95 old to TaxACT out of my own pocket with a credit card I would have give them a zero rating but the rating review would not offer me that option it's hardly worth my time to do this for you cuz I don't believe anything is going to be done again do not use tax act I work too hard for my money to be getting ripped off by these people
