The overall reputation of the company is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to issues with hidden fees, inadequate support, and software reliability. Many users expressed frustration over unexpected charges during the filing process and difficulties in accessing necessary tax forms. While some customers noted a history of satisfactory service, the recent trend indicates a decline in product quality and customer support responsiveness. Overall, the sentiment suggests a growing discontent with the company's practices, leading many to seek alternatives for tax preparation services.

This is a rip-off. You have to go thru the entire process before you find out that you have to pay $50 for a simple return only because you have dividend income of less than $1k.
I am profesional taxpreparer since 2000, and taxact is worse and worse, their enginiers control the software, even 2 updates everyday, software shutdown, i lost clients, they make the software for stupid enginiers not for prefessional taxprepares, i want to switch
My original return was rejected by the IRS. Had to fill in 3 boxes to get it right, yet they charged me 80 dollars to refile it. It cost me an additional 20 dollars to file the same state return. There was nothing prior to me clicking submit return that would have indicated this.
This company needs to be suited they will take your money an not help you file are help on your taxes. Watch what I say tax act count your days we all gonna get ate money back an then some. Y'all gonna be just like turbo tax when they got taken to court!
I have been using Taxact for years and I've had no problems, it's easy for anyone to understand the program.
I've used TaxAct for several years and it's usually quite good. However, don't believe the emails you receive as a regular customer concerning a 25% discount if you commit to using their product in the upcoming year. They do not honor it! I was told it would be automatically applied to my account so when I filed it would be there. Hahaha, it wasn't and when I chatted with a rep I was informed that since my return was already submitted it was too late. I'll seriously look in to other tax products next year.
Taxact works with Republic bank they make a mistake with my addess and have to reissue my refund check from 2022 and I am waiting for them to reissue with the mentioned Republic Bank aka republic Hell. Not professionals, outstanding negligence and good for " nothing" dont waste yoyr money! Choose a better business to deal with.
I have been with them for years. I do an estimated tax return with the information I have starting in Dec of each year to determine if I need to pay the estimated tax by 1/15 of the next year. As real information comes in I make changes. I had already posted 20 real documents and I then received a notice to my email address they have that I can get a 50% discount. Great. I clicked on the button to log in with my credentials and it created another return. I called and they told me I would have to either input the information again on the new return that shows they will give 50% off or they will give me only 20% on the one I inputted all the information on. That is bull.
No chance of getting last year's AGI with these clowns. Once requested they will send you to a dozen different products for 2023 and will not take you to your original request...ever. Thank goodness for H&R Block seamless system. Taxact sucks
Awful service...cant get to anyone the recorded line resists to connect to anyone... it is like fast food in the worse customer service...do not recommend...the bigger they become the horrible service it becomes...
I paid for federal and state tax return prep. TaxAct informed me that my returns were not eligible for e-filing. This has never happened to me before. So I printed and mailed my federal tax return before the April filing deadline (it's now May). However, when I went to print my state tax return, Tax Act has a notice that the forms for filing are not available to print yet. So I cannot file yet. It is now May 19, which is four days after the tax filing deadline for my state. I check the online account regularly, but the forms are still not available. I prepared my return with plenty of time to file and already paid for my state taxes to be prepared-- but they're not done and I cannot print them. Can I get ahold of anyone to fix this? Nope! No email, no chat "after hours" (5 pm local). Paid for a service I have not received which could result in negative tax consequences for me. I've been using Tax Act for close to ten years- maybe more-- but I think this will be the last time. I'm a tax lawyer and I hate it when tax preparers pull this crap. Definitely not the first I've seen but the first time this particular service has done this to me.
I've used TaxACT for over 10 years. 10 years ago I would have rated them five stars and now I would give them at two. Their customer service and availability has really gone downhill. Before you would always be able to get somebody on the phone or email now you have to jump through hoops just to be able to send in an email rather than being online or on hold or disconnected. They dance around and refuse to address glitches within their program that you can show exist, and their assistance with individual state tax returns, Utah in particular are not complete enough where you have to do manual entries and they are not carried over for you. In addition they had glitches in their social security benefit non-refundable credit that they refuse to it acknowledge even though the person I spoke with on the phone was curious why it seemed to work for another state. Another reason is I had done a debit for my state but then I got an email from TaxACT stating that I was going to mail in a check. I thought I'd messed up so I went ahead and mailed and a check and in addition to that had a debit taken out by the state. I filed an email right away to TaxACT and 6 days later they email me back and say that their email is no longer valid rather than address the issue.
What I do like is that I'm comfortable with the program and I'm wondering how long I'm going to decide that being comfortable is not good enough.
I filed my taxes with TaxAct, paid $133 thinking I would get assistance if anything went wrong. The IRS rejected my taxes, Federal and State. I think because I got less in my retirement than I got last year or they needed some pin from 2019. I was thinking everything was going smoothly since the site had that I had filed the returns. I went to check the status when no funds were taken expect the $133 I paid them. I had to hunt through the site to find the returns had been rejected... no email, text, not obviously show on the TaxAct site. I tried to contact them and was told the experts were not available at 3:00pm. I requested a refund and without hesitation they said they would give me a refund. They need to take the site down if they can't do any better. Now I am really late and have to take my taxes somewhere else and probably will have to pay, not to mention the problems I now face with the IRS. Don't trust them with your taxes.
It repeatedly gives many unnecessary Alerts, such as for 1099-B forms when you correctly enter VARIOUS in the date acquired field for funds acquired through several different purchases as is stated on the IRS INSTRUCTIONS. If your 1099-R form is blank for the (Illinois) State Distribution, the unhelpful Alert FAILS to notify you that you only need to enter your Gross Distribution amount to correct the input. Most frustrating is that now it seems to be almost IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK TO ANY OF THEIR PROMISED TAX EXPERTS: telephoning their Contact Support at *******600 gives a recorded Menu of number to press (I pressed 2 for assistance with filing the 2022 taxes, and then another 2 for their next selection, never getting a number for talking with a human tax expert), invariably, even with any other number selections, each time ending with the repeated statement that I should talk to someone on their Xpert Assist. BUT SELECTING IT ON THE TaxAct computer display screen repeatedly gives a popup that states: Our experts are currently assisting other callers (in bold fonts)... Please try back later, or on our next business day. You can visit the Help Center in the top-right corner for further assistance,...
And below this displaying their regular hours, a Try Again Latter button, and a Go to Help Center button.
Pushing the Try Again button puts you into a ridiculous infinite loop that I wasted several hours in without any possibility that that TaxAct would care enough about their paying customers to even ask me if they could at least put me on a call back list and CALL ME BACK LATER, INSTEAD OF FORCING ME TO STAY IN A REPEATED LOOP FOR MANY HOURS, DAYS, AND WEEKS! Their so-called Help Center is much WOST than a Google search, only giving a several irrelevant links without any human experts help around. Does TaxAct even care about all the hours that their customers cannot reach ANY OF THEIR EXPERTS ON THEIR INACCESSIBLE XPERT ASSIST? DO NOT USE TAXACT UNLESS THEY MAKE SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENTS AND START PROVING THE ASSISTANCE THEY PROMISED WITH THIER ALL-INCLUSIVE $133.95 bundle.
I used this online and it never showed me the full charge until I halter I had filed the return. It is not free federal filing if you need schedule 2. If you had health insurance through marketplace.gov schedule 2 information is required. So it would be $46.95. That plus $54.95 for state taxes cam to just obver $116. Then AFTER I HAD FILED it said I would be charged and additional amount for handling a bank transfer fees.I had chosen to pay by having it deducted from my return., and it took $172 rom my state return so got less than $10 back. You would be better off buying the software from HR Block or Other company so you know how UCB it will cost you without hidden charges that you can't get out of. Plus there is no online support.
First of all their staff does not know or understand the tax act. Had capital loss and support did not know how to fill in the form.
Second of all, tried to prepare my return beginning of February. The tax forms I needed were not available. Supports answer was they did not know when they would be available. I have to file a foreign return. Cannot do so without my US return. I waited until the middle of March. Forms still not available. At this point went to another provider. Surprise all the forms I needed were available.
Many better providers with better support
Will never use again, after doing my return, which wasn't difficult, made me pay to be able to print it out, I was aware it would cost 46.95 was ok with that. But then to print state forms to mail, charged me another 55.00$! Big ripoff
I found tax act to be extremely difficult to use. Several times it logged me out or I logged out and then it asked me to do a new return each time. It took three hours to complete which normally takes me about 1-1/2 hours to complete with all the logouts and asking me to renter information. When I finally finished all my information I initially chose pay for fee with refund which tax act wanted to charge me 54.99 on top of the 40.00. I ended up not paying for it with my refund and paid from my credit card. Buyer beware do not choose "Pay from my Refund". So glad I am finished.
Went thru T-Mobile to get Taxact service was a waste of time was on phone for 2o minutes they hung up on me never she never call me back and they have your number, someone else called about 20 minutes later,I already packed up my stuff and had other things to do, will never use there service again.
