TreasuryDirect has a rating of 1.4 stars from 150 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers complaining about TreasuryDirect most frequently mention customer service, bank account, and hour wait problems. TreasuryDirect ranks 211th among Government sites.
If you want to buy treasury bonds, bills, notes, etc. directly from the US Government, this is the place to do it. The fees are the lowest and you can trust them as much as you can trust any thing I suppose. The bad news is, as of May 3,2013 you essentially are paying the government to borrow your money since most (all?) real yields are currently negative and if interest rates rise as they one day will, all us bond holders will probably lose even more money. That said, what other assets look more attractive these days? I wish I knew...
I am Personal Rep for my aunt who passed this past February. While still alive, I had her move her savings bonds into Treasury Direct, thinking it would be easier to address payout after she died. In May, when I submitted the paperwork, the wait time was estimated at 4 months. I waited and called in September and was told the wait time had increased to 'expect it to take 12 months' due to high processing activity. Wow. Don't die holding savings bonds. If the wait time is as advertised, this estate will have extra expenses for tax and estate filing due to the delay. If NASA has to rely on Elon to bring back its own astronauts, perhaps TreasuryDirect can turn to him as well to introduce some technology and some AI into the process to aid the overburdened staff.

A U S Treasury investment site that is secure & confusing.
No statements, no paper, all online, & no fun.
Even Savings Bonds are now virtual.
God help you if they freeze your accounts, cuz you will need a Medallion Stamp from your bank to get your money back in a few months.
This explans why you should hire based on qualifications and not off skin tone. Another failure from the US and they keep adding up. The SLA's or ETA's are a disgrace. But coming from a country that hasnt won a war since WWII that explains it.Maybe hire some of those illegals to help you out! ID10T
Tip for consumers:
Everyone knows our government is a failure hence look who is elected president. This company stinks worse than Bidens first wife and kid!

They really tout how converting your paper bonds to digital is easier to manage. IT IS NOT! Do not use Treasury Direct! I log in to my account one day and can view my bonds, transfer, sell but the next time I log in, they are gone. Who knows where they went! The site is a maze of hidden or ridiculously small clickable words, and navigation is confusing. Treasury Direct could be described as a scam. They have a thorough FAQ page which is deceiving for anyone looking to create acct.
Tip for consumers:
Typical dysfunctional government website.

Worst website for a financial product that I have ever tried to use. Make several requests for the one time password. When you finally get it the site states that it is wrong (which it wasn't) and locks the account. Done with this. Withdrawing all of my money. The web designers are idiots.
I bought some I series bonds last year and recently decided to redeem them after one year. However, it has been over a week, and I haven't received the money yet. I reached out to TreasuryDirect through email, but they replied saying I should call them instead. After reading reviews from other users, I'm concerned that I may have lost my money or that it will take a lot of effort and time to receive my payment. I recommend avoiding TreasuryDirect due to their lack of customer service. Instead, consider investing in an S&P 500 index fund, where you can expect better returns and have legal recourse and a reputable business to address any customer service issues.
Tip for consumers:
Site is not user friendly and is dated

I've paid taxes to the US Treasury for 60+ years. I tried creating an account and they claim they have no record of me. They want me to go to bank to get a form certified then snail mail it back to them. There is no immediate internet or phone Customer Service. They reply "we're too busy to answer any questions". It would be interesting to know what they're busy doing. Maybe they should try doing their jobs. A total and complete waste of time, but typical of a gov't service - no accountability from bottom to top.
My mother got locked out of her account and it will take 6 months to get a response. What a scam and another way for them to hold onto your money. Don't buy savings bonds because u will never get your money the government owns it
It just is the worst design I have ever seen and too many times it after I click on a tab when I'm in it locks me out and I have to call a number to unlock my access. I would give a 1/2 a Star r No star if I could.
I did 42 years Federal Services and this is nearly the worst I have seen on a Federal site H/R or financial services.
Awful!
Reading the reviews here and lamenting about my own experience, I cant help but think, Why Bother! Support is non existent. To think I should invest thousands of dollars in bonds over time then when I need them what will happen? How can we really believe that our money is safe? Hard to believe this is how Treasury Direct operates. Look for Investments elsewhere!
Tip for consumers:
Even though many people will recommend investing in bonds through Treasury Direct, we should consider that when we actually need support with Treasury Direct we will experience what seems to be non existent support and frustration trying to work through account issues and possibly issues with redeeming of Bonds when you need them. Depending on your tolerance level and liquidity concerns may want to consider investing elsewhere!

They tell you up front before you even call that everything and everybody is busy. So, I stayed on the line about 35 minutes - this is after calling several times.
That's it. I have other things to do. I can see that there would not be any reason they should provide good customer service - they would get no commissions, etc. I was thinking if we gave them a zero rating, there just would not be response to try to improve. I get the impression that someone said, "o. K. let's set up a token agency for the public". They have too many security questions and after 4 years, sorry, can't remember all 3 exactly as I said them.
The website IMO was really straightforward and based on secure transactions. Not sure how it will hold up from here but i like the 7 percent current ii rate. Hope it stays high, as inflation likely will
My wife's deceased mother left a savings bond for her. I followed all of the steps carefully to complete the proper forms, sent them certified mail, and waited the time requested. Now have been waiting for 3 more months with no updates. Every time I call it is a 2 hour wait, or if I call less than 2 hours (even 1.5 hours) before the end of business hours there is a voice recording that says not enough time to take my call.
This is by far the worst bureaucratic agency I've ever encountered. SOMETHING needs to be done. This is completely unacceptable.
This is a site that might be appropriate for the last century.
Simple tasks are very complicated, and the new security procedures are outlandish: the original security questions you may have answered years ago - if you don't remember one of them, you are going to get locked out.
You will get repeatedly asked the same security questions in the same session over and over and over.
Is this a joke?
There is huge risk of losing access to your account which effectively means you can't do anything with any of your holdings.
The worst customer service ever.
My account was frozen for no obvious reason. I have tried to call them and the wait time is over 2 hours and even after one hour of holding, it was still over two hours! They do not answer emails, period!
After purchasing EE & I bonds for years, redeeming them now is a nightmare. I submitted 17 mature EE bonds in March and got an email stating it will take 6 - 8 weeks for my money to be deposited. It's now more than 8 weeks and although I've written emails including the customer & case numbers as requested, I get the same computerized "do not reply" letter in response. I've called the phone number given but that doesn't work either. Customer service is nonexistent. I'd like to know what I can do to get my money.

Called last week and was told to hang up as it was too late in the day. So tried at 1030 ET and am still on hold. If this were a bank site the Treasury would be fining them for such poor service. My wife tried to buy I-bonds and was told there were problems. She would need to fill out form, get a signature guarantee and mail. While waiting on hold voice said it might take 13 weeks to resolve.
Why doesn't this site have zero stars for really atrocious sites?
My Treasury Note has matured, and so now I am locked out of my account. No access to any password reset. I have to wait literally 2 hours on hold today in order to speak with someone. God forbid I get disconnected.
Treasury Direct also does NOT respond to email contact from their site.
Tip for consumers:
Use a different interest bearing tool

Since my paper bond is series E, my only choice to redeem to to submit it via mail. I received and email with a case number and they'll respond in 4-6 weeks. After 6 weeks sent multiple emails to customer service, with the standard reply "we're busy, we'll get back to you." Tried calling the customer number, but like others I was on hold +2 hrs with NO RESPONSE. I'm not sure theres anyone that actually works there? To send am email from your "account" you must open a financial account with them - but from everything I'm reading I refuse to open anything connected to my bank.
It's been +8 weeks - I just want to redeem my $25 bond! But at this point it's not worth it!
Has anyone actually gotten through to them and redeemed a bond!?!?
Tip for consumers:
Avoid sending anything to the treasury. Use your bank when you are able!

I have been trying to change may linked bank info now for 6 weeks and all I get is the run around. And since I complained 4 weeks ago about the time it was taking, they now claim that my account was not "authorized" and that I need submit docs I submitted last year when I opened this account. Absolute rubbish - resubmitting these docs will generate another 6-8 week delay. Even with the now high interest rates for I-bonds, I would think twice before investing with this terrible organization.

I got locked out because of a problem with a security question. It only allowed two tries and did not allow to switch to an alternative question. Only way to resolve is to call them but wait times are in excess of 1 1/2 hours. I wonder if I will ever get access again. While I expect some customer service shortfalls from a federal govt site, this is way beyond any semblance of acceptability.
My account became locked after I failed to remember which of the laundry list of security questions I previously set answers to. I am accustomed to remembering answers to such questions for log-in, but not remembering which questions I had selected years ago! Nowhere does TD warn you to 'write down your questions' as well as know your answers. Have been on hold all day waiting for a customer service agent. Message continually says 'wait time will be an hour.' Three hours later, up to an hour fifteen. How does that happen? And customer service only M-F daytime hours. Only the Federal govt can get away with this horrible, horrible service. I guess it is better than when they first set it up - back then, even the automated computer service was available M-F during working hours.
My account was locked due to incorrectly answering a security question. Instead of having a modern, updated website (theirs is a dinosaur!) and having 2-factor authentication, now the wait time on the phone is 2 hours and counting. Unbelievable.
UPDATE: An actual person answered my call. He was kind and fixed everything for me. (I think I got lucky with only a 2-hour wait - others were not so lucky.)

Do not make ANY mistakes!

Call at 5AM to avoid long holds and if you want something to whine about, try Fidelity, where they are professionals at misinformation and asking you 'how much are you planning on bringing in?'. My star rating is scored on the curve. These people at TD are doing very well given how underfunded and in demand they are. I taught myself how to maximize the site, i.e. I set up multiple links to several bank accounts, payroll direct deposit, and I use the C of I as my sweep account. Much better than brokerages to earn a steady return on money needed in <2 years.
Tip for consumers:
Yes, first call Fidelity's so called Investor Solutions dept *******548 and ask their employees some questions that you already know the answer to and see how many different incorrect answers you get, so you have a point of reference for evaluating TD. Here's a question you should definitely try: Tell them you want to transfer a TreasuryDirect T-bill to Fidelity and what is Fidelity's routing number and Bank for transferring T-bills to Fidelity. You will get multiple answers.
