These clothes are amazing: Beautiful style, excellent materials, careful attention to construction and detail. Many of their items come with an impressive guarantee: if your size changes within a year, you can replace the item with your new size. Their customer service has been friendly and responsive to my questions. Bottom line for me, though: their clothes just look and feel better than almost everything I've worn in years, even my former favorites.
I bought a few things from Universal Standard and didn't like any of them. When I went to their website to review the items, I was allowed to review only one out of four. I posted a well-thought-out, completely fair two-star review for their weird, poorly fitting Lisbon Tall Boot, and they never posted the review. Ever wonder why all of the reviews on their website are 4 or 5 stars and RAVE about the products? Yeah, me too. Now I have personal evidence that it's because they don't post low reviews. Which means I'll never buy one more thing from them. (Not that difficult as I didn't like their clothing anyway).
I received a skirt from this company and the fabric and fit were nice but it had a huge discolored streak. It was final sale even though it was still full price and I opted to exchange, which was smooth, however the replacement skirt was full of loose threads and had a permanent zipper indentation all the way around the waist from poor packaging for shipping (just in a plastic bag with no tissue). This isn't really what I expect when I pay 130 bucks for a skirt. I tried to leave a review and it was deleted- interesting that all reviews are five stars and my two star review magically disappeared. Not impressed with this company despite their great inclusive sizing.
Given the price point of these items, I would expect them to be fairly durable. However, all the tops I purchased (including a cashmere sweater) developed pinholes within a few months.
I wore the tops only with my Universal Standard jeans, so it is either a quality problem with the jeans or tops - I never have this problem with any other brands.
Sadly, when I reached out to customer service to report the problem, they only offered me a $25 coupon on a future purchase and weren't willing to pass my feedback on to their QA team. I'm not going to waste more money on items that are ruined after a few months.
It's about time that a company brought size equity and style together. Hurray for JCrew for forming this company. The colors ways are glorious and styles fantastic. I love that one can see how the garments will look on different body types. Their exchange/return policy is great. My only peeves are that dislike about their clothing, is that I wish they had more 100% cotton clothing items, and that the cuts across one's back and upper arms are too tight at least for me. It's as if they were being cut for tiny women. I love soft, breathable, all cotton garments and don't like anything overly clingy. I don't know why all larger clothing lines seem to think larger women want to wear garments with lots of lycra, or poly blends, or want tees that cling. The styling is tip top, I just wish they would ditch the dependence on poly and lycra and depend on my breathable fabric choices like soft jersey. All of their styles are incredibly flattering, and slimming.
I really wanted to like this company. The catalog was slick, and the company made promises such as try before you buy and such. Their sizing seemed odd, but because of the generous 30 day return policy, I ordered 8 items knowing my daughter and I could try at home.
It turned out that most items were way too large for both of us. We could only keep 3.
Here's where things go south. I go to the returns website and though I had purchased only one item marked as "Final Sale," most of the items on the returns website were marked "Final Sale" and thus unreturnable. Of the five items I wanted to return, only one could be returned.
Figuring it was a glitch, I called the customer service number. A computerized voicemail voice answered and said no one was available.
Now I was feeling like I'd been scammed. But undaunted, I sent an email to the email address provided with the order. To their credit, I got a response fairly quickly and the person promised to take care of my return. She asked me to identify the items I wanted to return.
I replied promptly with the SKU numbers of the items I wanted to return, and even included a PDF of the invoice with items to be returned circled.
No response.
I'll keep trying to get through. I give it another week then go to the BBB to lodge complaint.
The three items that fit are great quality and fit. If they had any customer service at all and hadn't done this bait and switch on me, I'd be exchanging most of the items not seeking refund. Despite the quality of the merchandise and the good feels behind their imaging, I cannot recommend this company and strongly urge others to beware. If you absolutely must order from here, order only one thing to try it so you won't be out lots of $$ when they don't allow you to return something that was supposed to be returnable.
Tip for consumers:
Do NOT buy a bunch of items before you try their sizing. The fit is weird so sizing was off a bit. And returns are a super hassle (they said all but one returnable but unable to process most of them on website and no one answers customer service phone).
