Business practices are arbitrary and unfair with the cost for freelancers of doing business on the site constantly increasing and various services and perks taken away. Not worth it for freelancers--and clients don't fare much better.

As a company, we worked with about 5 contractors. Everything was fine. The last contractor we used was in August. She did ok work and we were done. Then December 21st and 22nd, she billed us for 30 hours. I had been out of the office those two days and immediately reported it to Upwork upon my return on the 23rd. The contractor was never asked to do any more work. I messaged the contractor with no response. UpWork stated that I couldn't do anything until the following Monday when the contractor was paid. That happens to be the week after Christmas when I was out of the office for the holidays. I clearly explained that I would be out of the office and they said they would note that and I could dispute the transaction upon my return on January 3rd. Again, this was my first task on January 3rd. UpWork asked me to provide a description of what happened. I not only provided a description of the work done in August, but also provided a copy of all of my communication with the contractor. UpWork stated that they have to ask the contractor for their side of the story and they would get back to me. Well, the contractor closed her account and took the money and ran. UpWork stated that since the contractor didn't reply that they closed my dispute. So basically, UpWork allows scammers to create accounts and steal money for work that was never approved or requested. Very disappointed in their process of approving time entries AFTER the contractor has received payment. UpWork states that they have a guarantee, but not for hourly work. Beware!

Tip for consumers:
That contractors can come back months after the contract is over and get full payment.

First thing to know about Elance is that there is no Elance vs Odesk. They are one company with the same owners. So your experience will be pretty similar - support. Fees, pros and cons. That can be a good and bad thing.

Their fees are:

Site takes 8.75% fee for every project you complete. Elance fees have been raised last year from 6.75%. Fee's on earning $4k/month = $350. Plus $10/month if you want to use Elance actively and appear higher in search results.

What I didnt enjoy most about Elance was that it isnot totally free – if you don't join paid membership, you will keep feeling like you are using limited version of Elance.

Great things about Elance of course is it's size, they take Escrow payments to ensure safety. And there are loads of helpful applications for accountability and communication. It's a great place for beginners and freelancers from third world countries. It isnt so good place for web professionals.

They just stole my money without providing any information. Something from "outside" told them I broke their policy and they have scammed me without any rights to an appeal. NEVER RECOMMEND!

Elance was a great platform for freelancers to work on. After merging with Upwork it has gone downhill in so many ways I can't even list it all here.

As a client you need to pay 50 USD monthly in order to see the reports and timesheet of your freelancers! Too expensive.

I had reviewed a similar case like me:
I have reached the minimum payout of upworkptr.com few months ago which is $20,000. I've got a total of $24,000 on my total earnings page. I was so excited thinking I hit a jackpot considering this huge and easy money over the net. So I immediately went to the request payout link. To my dismay, it gave me a message that I have not yet reached the minimum payout limit of $20,000 for standard members. I contacted support (no live chat nor forums available) which only replies through email. I was then told to wait for 30 days so I waited for 30 days. I did the same step 30 days after and there it goes again, I still have not reached the minimum pay-out (I already have $64,000 total earnings). I started to think my suspicion might be true, this website may be a scam. To give them benefit of the doubt I emailed support for the 4 time, asking why I still can't request for payout when in fact I'm over the payout limit for standard members and had passed the wait time (according to them which is not on their terms of service.) I got the same reply, I HAVE TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER 30 DAYS TO REQUEST PAY-OUT and INSISTED THAT I UPGRADE MY ACCOUNT. So I responded that I'm through with the waiting time, and I made a payment to fund my account at Upworkptr to upgrade my account to the premium membership to get the payment. I have not heard anything again from them since.
Thus I made my rating to the $#@! Degree and suspended it till I see any development from Upworkptr who I expect to reply via e-mail.

Oh well, this is the second time I have been suspended as a client from upwork. Back in 2015 I signed up to do some freelancing, and then to hire some freelancer too. They suspended my account, saying that I have falsified some info. Upon asking what info has been falsified, to this date there has been no reply.

So I sign up another account from my business profile. And after completion of 10-15 hires, which I paid out in full, they still suspend me. What irks is not that they feel something is amiss. That's fine. Gather info and rectify. But what irks is the way they pull the plug. Here is an example:

"I have reviewed all aspects of your account, and unfortunately, you are violating Upwork policies. I regret to inform you that based on that review, it has been determined that your account will not be restored. The policy violation(s) in question lead to this final decision. Please be advised that we may not respond to further requests regarding this issue.

Thank you for your understanding."

The most pathetic of Customer Care Service would find this message repugnant and pompous.

-Does not mention which policy was violated
-Without any communication whatsoever, this is a final termination (not to be restored)
-Informs the client that they will not respond to any request on this issue
-And if that wasnt sufficient birdie in the face, it says thank you for understanding.

People at upwork, understand that you make money from the clients as well as the freelancers. You people live off us, and you do not show a shred of respect. The above message is from 2 days back. The correspondence I had 2 years back was similar. The LEAST you can do in such cases is have a proper correspondence to try and resolve the conflict to re-instate the suspension.

Absolutely putrid! But hey, Thank you for understanding!

Tip for consumers:
The best I can say for clients is that this is not someone in person that you can deal with and pressure to get what you deserve. You are at mercy of some immature middle-managers who can choose to suspend your entire account just because they spilled some coffee on themselves.

My name is Fundiko and I reside in a refugee camp. I worked for at least 3 organizations online that crooked me almost USD 3,000. If my brain functions well, I opened my account with Upwork on 3rd September 2021. I landed my first job in transcription on 17th September 2021 with Ibrahim Yasser, and this Job was the key to opening other opportunities at Upwork, and It was a pleasure to work with him in the way that he was not my employer rather my teacher. I am currently working as a Transcriber, Social Media Marketer, and Translator. I have been able to gain USD 1,000 at Upwork within 3 months. As a refugee, this money has assisted me to open my own small poultry with 100 chickens and a small shop. As a refugee, I no longer rely on assistance from the UNHCR rather rely on myself and this has assisted me to see myself working toward the restoration of my hope. Therefore, none can hinder me from saying that Upwork is the restoration of hope to the hopeless. Apart from this, I have been of great importance to my fellow refugees, thanks to Upwork. I sometimes get work opportunities that request me to work as a team and that is how I train my fellow refugees in transcription and Social media marketing to assist me to fulfill some work to gain money after accomplishing the tasks they were assigned.

Tip for consumers:
Upwork is a website that I cannot compare with other websites since it has security and trustworthiness in the workplace. I have been using Upwork since September 2021 and I was able to gain USD 1,000 within 3 months. I was thinking that I will not get this money but I got it without any problems contrary to other websites I used before. Upwork up, up forever.

I ended up working with some Upwork recruiters in different fields including Soscia Media Marketing, Transcription, and Translation.
