Business practices are arbitrary and unfair with the cost for freelancers of doing business on the site constantly increasing and various services and perks taken away. Not worth it for freelancers--and clients don't fare much better.
Upwork cheats people out of their money. Some freelancers worked for me, I was generally happy with the work and was ready to pay. Upwork suspended my account and the accounts of my freelancers and after 4 days, still have not told me why. Although I proved that I had access to the account I was paying from, by verifying two random deposits, they continued to request for more and more personally identifiable information. As I type this, my account is suspended. They did however, managed to open it long enough, to take the money that belongs to my freelancers out of my account. Those freelancers, haven't received their money, and their accounts are still suspended. Upwork's story to the freelancers is that they refunded my money but I haven't seen any evidence of the refund. If this is not fraud, I don't know what is!

Upwork is being run by a group of $#*!ty people who are just greedy for money. I don't say it is a scam, it is 100% legit and also I have earned a decent amount from upwork. But the upwork management sucks. Recently my account got suspended for no reason. When I asked them to provide me a reason then they simply refused and they also charge 20% from each service you provide and also a withdrawal fee and also a very low conversation rate. Moreover if unfortunately if you get in a dispute which is not a big issue because it can happen as there are plenty of frauds. In that case upwork again find new ways to launder money from freelancers. I can say if you are working fine on upwork then you are very lucky and a suggestion don't login your account from any other device or from app because app suck. Even though your project get spoiled but don't try to login on any other device if your care about your account.

There is no privacy with Upwork. They suspended my account (which had all 5-star ratings) because of a comment in an email stream. Neither I nor the freelancer had spoken to Upwork about this. If it was an infringement of their policy, I don't have a problem with it. But the suspension was done without warning and could only be known by reading the email stream. I don't want my business known by the snoops at corporate headquarters of Upwork.

The fees would be more reasonable. For beginners after taxes and upwork fees there's literally no money left from the salary. But a great place to gather more experience and contacts! Easy to use and a lot of work options available.

The concept of it is a great one, but the service at upwork is the worst. They don't care about honest transactions and are willing to let scammers work on their platform as long as they get their cut. I lost thousands of dollars with upwork and they did nothing about it.
Not an honest company at all, use a different platform.

It was my first time and I ended up talking on WhatsApp to the freelancer. He took my website credentials and put malware all over my three sites. I had to close two sites and the third one is from being ranked number one in google to not ranking.

My sister who worked for oDesk (now Upwork) was before earning hefty sums of money from just working for the then oDesk. Suddenly, her account was terminated for no apparent reason. She told me that she contacted the US Office, and they promised to reinstate her which they did. However, when the oDesk (Upwork) Philippine branch saw this, they hurriedly closed her account once more for no apparent reason.

Upwork has been on a MASSIVE downhill slide since oDesk. They no longer handling their own dispute system (they are outsourcing it to some inattentive company called modira). Fraud charges on my paypal account are up from the new lower class of workers and when you dispute the charge with paypal, upwork tells them they are handling it. Instead, your dispute gets lost in a slow support system called MODIRA which is outsourced as well
It's BAD. 90% of of the jobs go wrong and support handles maybe 5% of the disputes! This isn't just an issue of crap work. They don't care about either the freelancer or the job poster.

- No need to pay the freelancer upfront
- No taxation for non-US customers
- accepts PayPal
Didn't work for me on other occasions, but will highly recommend for any writing needs.

I have been with Upwork as a Freelancer from the beginning when they merged with Elance. Once you decide on your work category you need to bid on as many projects as you can. In my case it is voice overs and within a week of my joining I had an offer to work on a clients project and I was thrilled. Work rules from Upwork are strict and if you follow the guide lines the work will come. Make sure your client has posted the escrow before you start a job and ask questions of your client so there is no misunderstanding. You can work full time or part time, your choice. Alan M.

I thought i was hiring a freelancer from the USA, turns out he was from and African country.
Upwork allows fake profile images, fake country locations and fake work skills to be displayed on their platform.
This cost me big on a job that was completed not to the specified request.
Upwork do not care when the work is of low quality or does not meet the contract specs, they say they are not responsible for this and i just have to work it out with the freelancer who refuses to refund my money.
This will not make any judgements if the customer is not happy with the work, so you are stuck with no satisfactory job completion and no refund.

Was quite happy with Elance until Upwork took over, then I noticed a decline in job offerings, pay and general customer service. When I called to finally close my account after dealing with one too many issues, the rep on the phone didn't seem to care when I told her how disappointed I was with Upwork. Don't waste your time.

I am lucky that I have worked with the best clients thus far. Only one customer is kind of absconding with this final escrow. But apart from that, I have only met with gems. That said, I have applied for various jobs with great excitement. It is not the money that turns me on, in the first place. It is the thrill and joy of working on an engagement that is close to my heart. However, on many occasions, I have sadly realized that requirements are posted but the respective clients do not look at them for days on end. They either never look at these ads, or look at them but do not respond to applicants. Eventually, these posts just fade away, for want of a better word. I hope Upwork has a mechanism to manage this, in the interest of all the stakeholders; the freelancer, the client, and the platform. The second category of the client is the one who never confirms the payment details, offers a low rate, but expects the moon and something else.
