Upwork has been my trusted platform for finding freelance opportunities and connecting with clients from around the world. The platform's vast network of clients and freelancers, comprehensive job listings, and secure payment system make it easy to find meaningful projects and build a successful freelance career. I appreciate Upwork's commitment to transparency and professionalism, as seen in its dispute resolution process and feedback system, which ensure fair and equitable transactions for both parties. Moreover, the platform's collaboration tools and communication features enhance teamwork and streamline project management. With Upwork, freelancing is not just a job—it's a rewarding and fulfilling career.
I've been on Upwork for a month and now I want to leave. In the past month, I've submitted 18 proposals, but only 5 were even viewed. Out of the 4 clients who contacted me: 2 asked me to register on a suspicious virtual currency website (I flagged these posts, but they keep messaging me). 1 wanted to pay outside of Upwork and ghosted me when I insisted on a contract. 1 rejected me for a reason that contradicts their own job posting (they require freelancers from City A & City B, and I'm in City A!). Upwork support told me connects aren't refunded for unresponsive clients or unfair rejections. I understand the challenge of building a reputation without prior reviews since the platform is designed to perpetuate a frustrating cycle: no reviews, no contracts, no reviews. However, the problem already goes beyond just lacking reviews. Despite targeting jobs well within my expertise, most of my proposals aren't even viewed. I accept rejections if they are due to my profile or skills, but the constant stream of scam messages and wasted connects on unviewed proposals is unacceptable. Investing time and resources into a platform that seems rigged against new users is demoralizing. I'm not opposed to fair competition, but Upwork's current system creates unnecessary obstacles for those trying to build a freelance career. This, combined with the prevalence of unresponsive and unscrupulous clients, has led me to give up on this platform.
This is pretty much a stab in the back for the hard work and dedication I had put into Elance. As with many of you we put in the extra effort to have our clients satisfied, thinking the result would be more business for the service we offer.
Out of the blue my account was under review with no explanation as to why, other than form letters. "Close out all your jobs" and then we will review. I strongly feel it did not matter what I did... something triggered my account to be shut down. I guess I will never know.
In the long run it is better off for me not having to deal with an unprofessional company that does not have the "Balls" to talk to me to give a reasonable explanation. I just have to apologize to all the people I have worked with who put the trust in me recommending Elance.

PS. Elance please stop sending me offers to bid on jobs... I do not have an account with you.

I have previously worked at upwork as freelancer. It was good experience. But as I am a telecom engineer, I need more projects related to telecom. That's why I have at fieldengineer.com where I have many projects related to telecom industry. The perfect workforce solution for telecom companies. A platform specifically designed to hire a telecom engineer to work remotely

They are not worth even filling out the application to be freelancer. They ask the dumbest questions and are stricter than Hilter when it comes to qualifying for work. The will make it very difficult to even get past their registration form.
I found another freelancer site and found work immediately.
Forget even pursuing work through them, they are a sham.

I accepted my first job on elance. Indian-based company paying $5/hour... I accepted it thinking I would do the job to get a rating. Big mistake.
This company is out of Mumbai and the guy was impossible to please. Said my work was of exceptional quality, then turned around at the end when I said I wouldn't do any more work until we renegotiated a new rate and gave me a 3.7 out of 5 rating.
That just ruins my rep for any future clients.
Client ratings are too subjective and the rates offered freelancers are way below market value. I would not recommend elance to anyone in the U.S. or, at best, only submit proposals to U.S. or European-based clients.
Tip for consumers:
Only accept jobs from U.S. or European-based clients.
Indian based companies pay like $5/hour and expect exceptional work with very short turnaround times. Very disappointing.

I had an issue with a freelancer I hired going MIA. He got paid for 1/2 the job went and then went silent. Upwork is more concerned with keeping every dollar than admitting when something goes wrong and correcting it. You provide security for the freelancer but what security do the people and companies hiring these freelancers get? After months of dealing with the very unprofessional CS team they FINALY came to a resolution when they could't get in contact with the freelancer either. They were suppose to refund my money back to my credit card as I explicitly stated. They gave me a credit and it was used my another person on my team. HENCE ME EXPLICITLY stating refund back to the original form of payment.

Since I started freelancing on Upwork, it was a continuous growth. I earned, I worked on exciting and challenging projects and I improved my skills range. I have tried to freelance on other platforms like Guru, Hubstaff, Freelancer, and Fiverr. Here are my reasons for the 5 stars feedback and why today I freelance ONLY on Upwork:
1. The largest number of clients and job postings (in my category-Illustration and graphic design).
2. Excellent feedback system which helps to select the best jobs and clients.
3. The best UI/UX design among marketplaces for freelancers.
4. Excellent contracting and payment system, protecting freelancers and clients both.
5. Upwork real-life meetings and events, so as webinars where you can hear a lot of interesting topics helpful for a better freelancing.

Upwork rejected my application. I have superior writing capabilities and access to online databases like EBSCO Host. I could have brought excellent writing and content creation skills to the platform yet they rejected my application because they have too many writers. How is that possible? Why not let employers decide? I suspect they rejected me because I have started my own SaaS for business development, not at all in competition to Upwork. I guess I should have lied and showed myself to be less capable of delivering quallity writing and online content.

I was an Elancer for 6-years and LOVED it. I've been on Upwork for a year and make peanuts. The interface sucks, the job pay for most jobs suck, and while I get an occassional job, it is nothing worth bragging about. A recent issue with a client resulted in a $30 loss for me with agreement for the client from the start. I really hate the site but what can you do until you find one that is free like this one? I did write this book if anyone wants to look. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WQ3YFZ0

Are you kidding me? You have a project on Elance, it is ongoing, it is complex, you are using the platform as it presented itself - as a way to document, contract, schedule, approve, pay the freelancer - and Upwork is NOT going to migrate that information, they want you to conclude it as "finished" and start a new project. Really? Legally and in all sort of dimensions this is POOR business. And Upworks customer service is incompetent, their offices - no one seems to exist or answer phones. Elance was pretty good to great-now it is like the inmates are running the asylum.

Upwork has made it possible for me to get clients from all over the world, and learn so much through working with different teams. I definitely recommend Upwork.

I was using eLance and was very happy with their service. However, when I was forcefully "upgraded" to UpWork, everything went wrong. First, they have no rights for their useless "freelancer protection service". This is actually managing escrow and for that financial service license is necessary at least in Europe. And then they must release payments within 48h and not in 6 days. And why should customer make payment before hiring? Normally customer makes payment, when happy with the result, if not agreed differently. And monitoring private conversations under NDA is criminal activity. I have reported it to FBI, but seems, that US authorities are so used to monitor any telecom usage, that they do not even bother to arrest for such kind of crimes. I wrote a longer article to my blog: http://www.veikoherne.com/2016/07/upwork-illegal-services-are-paradise-for-scammers/

Great - Love the ability to connect to clients seeking remote services
Not So Good - Lots of spam listings and the rating system is VERY skewed against the freelancer.
If you are willing to work hard at UpWorks system- then it can be a great tool. Worth the time, but frustrating and needs serious improvement.
Tip for consumers:
Pay close attention to all your scores and ratings. Ask clients for positive feedback. Do not take clients with a short UpWork history or who are unverified.

Upwork is unevitable tool for freelancers and companies.
As Artist, I'm very grateful to God and the hardwork of the upwork team for the oportunity to know and have a good relationship with clients and studios of the world; making our routine more easy, automating contracts, fees (we can prepare automatic reports for national fees! :) ), billing and calculations. I love so much the gamefied way to manage our profiles, accumulating points long of the time.
Guys, you have notion? You're helping professionals where the national economy is having severe problems, politicals and pandemic. This is very important about everything in more poor regions...
Thanks and I hope see the community grow more! <3

I've been working on Upwork for over 5 years now - since fall 2016, after several months of unsuccessful attempts to find a full-time job in the country where I live. On Upwork, I signed my first contract after 2 or 3 days after registering.
Although for some time I thought freelancing was temporary, then I decided that freelancing would become my main occupation.
Upwork is just like any other "market" - there are both good or bad clients. Over time, you learn how to distinguish the first from the second. You have complete control over who you want to work with and who you don't.
This is not a place where you can easily earn money. Here you can earn only if you are really a professional in your field. It may be difficult to find clients initially and even if you are an experienced freelancer, you still need to put in some effort to find new clients and sign new contracts.
But if you are a good specialist, you'll eventually find long-term contracts and will be earning in US dollars, which is especially important if you live in a developing country.
I highly recommend this marketplace for all good specialists who want to find remote work.

***PLEASE- Anyone who is having issues with theft from this company should report them to the Better Business Bureau.*** I would say contact a lawyer as well but as always, these cases are hard to prove and always seem to be in favor of the business so they continue to scam on****
I am having trouble setting up my profile, which I am being forced to do in order to have complete access to the provided tools but their website seems to be having a problem and is not accepting any profile picture I attempt to upload. They have no way of getting in touch with Customer Support and I am being sent in circles to look at templates that do not help me. Any reliable company would have a way to reach them, especially if they are dealing with money and other sensitive information.
