I use Venmo on a daily basis almost. It's a convenient way to share a bill among friends. It's kind of social media for finances as I can like my friends transactions as well (if they are set to public). I don't like much that PayPal is behind this company but so far it's working smoothly. Yet, I wouldn't recommend to transfer large amounts of money, I limit to around $100, as it isn't bank.
Venmo is a haven for scammers and they will not reverse payments for products or services not received. They said you need to purchase additional purchase protection. I did not know this and would recommend using your bank for transfers such as Zelle.
My account is frozen and I just get the run around trying to fix it. I had to go to PayPal to pay people.

Customer service is horrible, and they can't provide the services they offer. Venmo is the definition of a scam.

Venmo charges you for instant transfer. Zelle is 100% better and free. If you prefer to give money away, use VENMO.

If people don't use PayPal directly... this is a good 2nd option through the PayPal team.
I use them in the "online marketplace"... on occasion.

I set up an account with Venmo for a convenient way to make payments between my siblings. It seemed like a good idea and the first time it was used, it worked like a charm. The second time was not so charmed. I actually made the mistake. I sent a payment not realizing that there were insufficient funds (I failed to transfer the funds into an account set up specifically for companies like Venmo) in the fun money account. Venmo kindly paid the said amount and promptly sent a notice to me letting me know that they had made the payment on my behalf and all I needed to do was to transfer the funds to Venmo. I immediately realized what happened and signed on to correct MY mistake. "The Problem"... the account was frozen so no money could be transferred into the account. How odd that Venmo would freeze an account so that a correction could not be made. It's actually quite backward in someone's logic, even if they do have a PhD. To sum up, the youths who are the customer care team were very polite but hamstringed in their ability to problem solve in this case. While the payment cleared my bank immediately and Venmo has received notification that the funds are on the way, the account is still frozen. My only goal was to DEPOSIT the payment that was due to Venmo and fix my mistake. This needs to be an easier process that does not require three phone conversations and now a poor review. I am writing this so that the young powers that be can fix this glitch.
Timeline:
5/23 Payment was made
5/31 Email sent from Venmo letting me know that I had insufficient funds but they honored the payment
5/31 I logged on immediately to correct my mistake only to find out that the account was frozen
5/31 Spoke with Juanita to clear up the error and had the bank send the funds
6/02 The funds at the bank cleared and transferred them to the Venmo account (slow due to Memorial Day holiday
6/03 Account still frozen. "Maybe by next Tuesday this will be cleared up"
The issue is freezing an account the same day that a customer is notified due to insufficient funds and corrections cannot be made. Odd. Most institutions would have frozen payments out and allowed incoming payments to be made.
