Many factors affect the network speeds. If there's heavy congestion on the network, weather, physical distance from nearest tower(s), any physical barriers such as walls/buildings/trees/etc between you and nearest tower, even number of users on your particular "node". Your phone is part of factors affecting service,do you know the "specs" of your phone, such as RAM size, and the processor? Have you tried talking to your service provider?
Try taking your sim card out and reinserting it and try your phone again after you power it off and back on. Of course you should power it off before you take the sim card out. Sometimes I just one drop can dislodge the SIM card from its position which will keep the phone from connecting. I would try that first, it is usually the simple solution in most things.
Your phone gets hot because your battery is in a extremely small cramped space and rapidly receiving energy and believe it or not energy is matter and causes friction so as long as you're charging your phone at a rapid pace is going to get hot especially if you're using the phone while you're charging it because then the processor is actually causing heat as well as the battery and you can damage the phone and the battery doing this in most cases the phone is not made to be used while charging.
