Why is the network so slow? I purchased a phone thinking it would be faster but it's the same; sometimes it's even slower.

Many factors affect the network speeds. If there's heavy congestion on the network, weather, physical distance from nearest tower(s), any physical barriers such as walls/buildings/trees/etc between you and nearest tower, even number of users on your particular "node". Your phone is part of factors affecting service,do you know the "specs" of your phone, such as RAM size, and the processor? Have you tried talking to your service provider?
