Adoptapet.com, like Petfinder.com is more like Craigslist for pet adoption than anything else. You are not adopting from the site, you are adopting from the listing organization. They just provide the marketplace to help you find listings and to communicate with the pet advertiser.
Adopt A Pet supposedly vettes the organizations that list on the site, but this seems limited to a Vet Reference and they do not require proof of 501(c)(3) status or that documentation to prove you have required permits to operate a shelter or rescue in order to list on their site. There standards are not transparent and there are a lot of bad actors and wackos to be found.
The only mechanism they provide for complaining about an organization is via email and that information is way too hard to find. This lets a lot of bad actors and wackadoodles stay in business and make pet adoption far more frustrating than it should be.
PetFinder (and all the pet adoptions sites) really need to provided a rating and review system like eBay, This would quickly identify the organizations to avoid and save people heartache and frustration.
They should also require a link to the adoption requirements and applications on the site.
If they were to do these two things, I believe the majority of the complaints about pet adoption could be avoided.

Very happy with the communication from Adopt A Pet. They sent information frequently to me that closely matched my request. It was all up to me to decide. I waited and turned down until I decided which pet to adopt. The process was terrific. I'm extremely happy with the contact person who told me up front what to expect - slow at the beginning, training, observe, more training, etc. She came home so scared and timid, expected this at her age, it's all new and not what she was used to. I'm not a new pet owner so I went into this knowing my responsibilities. She's getting lots of cuddles, helpful happy training, and she's warming up quickly. You have to help them. I'm 100% happy with Adopt A Pet!

I called over this adorable Siberian puppy listed as being 8 weeks old and was sent an "application" to fill out. After filling out several pages the questions they asked were very personal financial information, information that could be used to either drain one's bank account, tax one's credit line or steal one's identity. I spoke to someone on the phone about this and was assured they were perfectly legit and on the up-and-up. I decided to wait and do some research and found this scam report site as well as others. Still, I wanted to see for myself. Six week later I went online and sure enough, the same little adorable Siberian Husky was there, still only 8 weeks old. Amazing how they stopped time! Adopt a Pet is, in my opinion, likely nothing more than a scam to separate a person from their money. Don't try it.

We were able to find and adopt our perfect dog in three weeks. I do not find that to be an unreasonable time. We are extremely happy with the process. Adopt A Pet provides information from many rescue organizations, and some respond quicker than others. I was amazed at all of these negative reviews since our experience was excellent.

I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. I'm assuming it's more about the agencies or individuals putting pets up for adoption versus the site itself. I signed up for alerts. I didn't pay for premium subscription however the first application I submitted was review and approved in 48 hrs. By the end of the same week I had my puppy. She was shipped to me from SC safe and sound. My recommendation for this looking to adopt; review the organization and/or individual carefully. You should never have to pay upfront. Make sure you meet in a safe place. Hope this helps!
Tip for consumers:
The site serves its purpose. No different than any other online vendor. The buyer always has to be aware.

If this site that pretty much covers a huge number of pets is not sufficient enough with people, responders, and sources, they should not be created and give people false hope and sense of getting a pet for the families.
Every time i liked a pet and sent an email, it took so long for them to respond and every time they said the pet has been adopted. Very disappointed. I wish there were more sites available for pet adoption. Because i only have the option of going to my local shelters. Not many choices. So sad.

Won't call back. Address is a mail box inside a mailbox store. Total fraud, gives hours of operation what to the mail box store. Phone # is out of area, with no answer. Scam! Just feeding off funding, can't find anywhere or anyone around business that knows of them. Even shelters do not know them.

Have been trying to adopt for 3 months. Filed out a number of applications. All that responded state application reviews great. All have checked with veterinarians each time. NONE will go as far as to set up appointments to meet dogs. None advise if there is a problem. Dogs removed as if adopted out. Immediately relisted! Approximately 1/2 of the listed dogs pages are immediately gone when I open the specific shelter sites. If they are NOT trying to find homes for dogs or cats, why waste the effort? What is the purpose of this scam?

Im really shocked at all these negative reviews and i wont discount their experiences but mine was just fine. I didnt think to look up this site before using it and maybe its because im coming from the other side; im the person who gave up a pet. I like that they gave you tips about what to ask potential adopters, that was really helpful for me. Also gave you their contact info to contact ASAP. I dont think i will be using if i need to adopt, but as for the pet owners perspective, it was great. I hope its not a scam.

I was adopting a puppy through Adopt a Pet was about to pay the fee for an 'out of town pup' and his transport fee but the pics and vid's I received were all evasive, the 'rescue' organization never called me at any time m, they texted my references only. Then I looked into it and their website was last used in 2018, further inquiry led to finding out the organization was officially terminated in 2018. The pic on Adopt a Pet turned out to be a different breed stock pic on a reverse image search. I confronted them with lack of validity of their organization and they tried to shame me. 'Help Rescue' is the organization name. Then I look at Adopt a Pet reviews and now know this is not a trusted website and it's all just a scam. Stay clear don't waste your time and don't give anyone money.

I've been looking for a dog for 6+months. Adopt a pet.com is only one avenue of my searching, but the only avenue that seems to deal with scammers only. They obviously have no protocol for checking people/animals. Second time wasting my time with this site. Don't waste yours.

To get straight to the point if you see a dog you really want on this site than go full steam ahead and do everything you can do to acquire him/her. If you leave it in the hands of these adoption agents well than good luck b/c they are unorganized and all over the map. Our focus was on one particular handsome and sweet dog and 1/2 way through the adoption process we than were informed "oh... well he's not available. I mean, I don't think he is"... Fact is he was available on the website... once we got your vet check completed his status turned to PENDING (we thought it was us) and than days later they are telling us to adopt a different dog. Funny thing is that same day the National Great Pyrenees Rescue emailed us to see if we adopted him or not. So its quite apparent they are ALL OVER THE MAP. Good luck!

You guys are a joke you just sent me the same pet that he is available for adopting. Your not interesting in helping people adopt you should be ashamed of yourself. Your doing a great job! Your nothing more than a scam to fleece people out of money!

Long response time is not what we are looking for in these towns of course we understand people are understaffed. But it seems in these times since they're understaffed at the office they would pay more attention to their website and their responses to people that are trying to save animals. I've waited over two weeks for a response. On top of it they're one of the only people that are requiring pay for their adoption by seniors. In times like this it seems like they would be more lenient and have a better response system since they're at home in front of their computers but that's not the case. I don't know if it's because of my last name or where I live but I have not received a response to date.

I truly don’t know anything about this business I just know that they have no response record with me

We applied for 3 puppies in our area, got a call from one foster mom that was NOT in our area, she was 5 hours away, ONE WAY! It's been 2 months and never heard back about the other 2 pups that are supposedly in our area... Adoption fee is really high for this kind of customer service. It seems they had good intentions when creating the company but when I applied I got shuffled to several other places including a company owned by Bissell. Yes, Bissell the carpet cleaners. Don't we have enough corporate giants over reaching all aspects of life on this planet? NOT interested, I'm sure I'll find the perfect pup in my area without the help of this organization.

I found a Beagle named Mimi was adopted last month after I signed she notified me in less than 5 minutes. Everything she stated did not click. I found the dog on your website last week. You need to check out to remove your pet is legit. I'm going to get a dog from a rescue league.

After perusing the adopt a pet website and available dogs I was actually quite astonished at more than a few of the adoption fees. There are almost three thousand dogs available for adoption in the Cumming, Ga area and so far each one I have clicked on the adoption fee has been $330! That is absolutely ridiculous. I am a single mom and to adopt a dog that was either abandoned, found or just given up for that amount of money is highway robbery. How is it that pets at the Cherokee County Ga Animal Shelter have a $100 adoption fee and the adoption fee for other places is so inflated? Are you telling me that costs to chip, vaccinate and take care of animals is different elsewhere? Give me a break. Stop trying to milk people for all they have and give these animals a real chance at a real home instead of trying to line your pockets.

I have been waiting on a response from them and nothing. We took the time to fill out this long application and for what. I don't understand if the whole purpose is to put these pets in loving homes why there are no returned phone calls or emails. This is truly sad. This place only have a few animals at their rescue and there should be no reason why they could not contact me. We fell in love with one of their pets and we are still waiting. Hopefully they will contact us soon if not we will just move on with another rescue. So sad for these animals at this rescue.

I posted my purebred kitten Scottish breed on that website and received several applications. I started review and selecting the new family for the baby. Made an appointment with one lady, with name Megan Orr. She behaved suspicions, insane and inadequate. Looked at the kitten like it was something disgusting. I didn't like her questions. Instead of asking about the diet, supplies required and other questions which are normally asked by the responsible adopter she started blaming me that I could fake vaccination records and didn't do vet exam. I understood that this is the typical "Karen" and decided to leave and decline her application. She started texting me with her weird messages being rude. As far as I understand she complained about me this web site and they removed my account. Dear "Adopt A Pet" I will not give my kitten to mentally ill person. Better check your adopter for mental consistency. Сrazy people can be very convincing.

You are giving your address name etc to a mostly volunteer organization that you cannot see or talk to. I have had my computer crash twice when trying to fill out applications. One application actually asked for my social security number - think about that. I did not give them my Social security number and my computer crashed. So these people who you cannot see/talk to and they don't get back to you have an awful lot of info about you and your family. I got security risk flash on my screen two times - both times they were from either adopt a pet or pet finder. These organizations are a security threat as well as worthless when trying to adopt a pet.
Tip for consumers:
Adopt a pet and pet finder pose a security risk. You are giving out info on your home/location/family to people you cannot see or talk to and they don't get back to you.

Contacted 3 different listings about adopting a cat. The first one was already adopted but never deleted the listing after several months. The other two listings wouldn't respond at all, even after several messages. Waste of time, find pets somewhere else that actually makes an effort.

Don't say I didn't warn you - adoptapet is one of THE WORST. Right up there with petfinder. There was a pet that was being processed through a transportation service. Local adoption was not even available. Its all about the money with most rescues. Also, they emailed saying our dog who passed away was available for adoption. The listing was from 10 years ago and if you clicked on the link " no longer available". The best places if you are able to care for a pet is private owner. These are just people who can't have a pet for whatever reason. Its inexpensive and there's no funny business.

I lodged an ad and have received nothing but a bunch of scammers. I paid a fee to place this ad and have spent hours trying to discern who is genuine. They do send alerts but it does not tell you who is the actual scammer and if they do know why are they allowed to still bombard genuine consumers with this rot.
This site should be shut down.

I found a dog that was perfect for what I was looking for to add to my family. I submitted an application and the next day I received a contract asking for my credit card information to pay the adoption fee. I had never seen the dog and I have no idea where the dog is but they wanted $100 from me. Don't be fooled! Do not send them money! I am savvy enough to know that it was a scam and did not provide any credit information. They should be ashamed of themselves.

A year ago, I adopted my current cat Jelly and it was a smooth process. Recently we have been looking for a sibling/playmate for her because our work schedules have been getting busier and we don't want her to be lonely. However, every single person or shelter I have emailed never replies back. It makes me wonder- is AdoptaPet really sending my emails out? It's getting annoying- they don't even let you know when a pet has gotten adopted, you have to find out by checking the page of the pet every single day. 5 stars for the way Jelly was adopted, but minus two stars for this service.
Tip for consumers:
Try directly emailing the shelter or owner if possible.
