Don't use this website. They have been charging me for months even though I have cancelled online TWICE and by phone once. Don't be fooled by their "Free Trial" Worst company ever!
Without my direct & explicit consent Ancestry.com automatically enrolled me in their Semi-annual World Explorer Membership
They did this by using the credit card number that I used to explicitly purchase the DNA kit
After buying their kit in the first week, they started bombarding me with multiple emails trying to sell additional kits, etc. I did not read all these emails or if I did, I probably barely glanced at them
In one of these emails in very small letters they informed me I had been subscribed to this club for free for 14 days AND IF I DON'T CANCEL at the end of 14 days they'll charge me a $158 fee
HOW DO I CANCEL A MEMBERSHIP I NEVER EXPLICITLY AGREED TO?
In order to generate steady cash flow, it seems that the business model of Ancestry. Com counts on the fact that the typical person does not open all their email or if they do, do not read all fine print
THIS IS A SCAM!
Limited data base in Asia region. I wanted to find out what is the specific ancestral region I belong to; instead, I received results stating "East Asia" which includes "Russia, China, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Palau" (copied directly from Ancestry website results). Ridiculous, right? I don't think that is sufficient information for $100 they ask for their test. The company does not disclose to public the fact that data from that part of the world is not available to them in the amount sufficient to break it down into more specific regions. I called customer service to claim at least partial refund, but after one hour spent on the phone, I was unsuccessful. They kept redirecting me from manager to manager and not answering questions directly. Although they admitted over the phone that they don't have enough data from Asia to break it down into more details as they do in other parts of the world, they said that they will not refund me. Such a fraud. I could have just threw $100 in a trash cane because the data they provided me with was not even supplemental to what I already knew.
I was charged $150 after I canceled my subscription before the free trial ended. I pushed cancel subscription and then was brought to a page where they were "sad to see me go" and I clicked my reason for canceling and then submitted it. APPARENTLY if you don't scroll down to the bottom of the screen to click "continue to cancel" AGAIN, then it doesn't actually cancel it and they will charge you money. Then it brings you to ANOTHER page when you have to scroll down and click cancel my membership. So if you cancel, make sure you click it click at least 10 times or they will charge your account!
Subscription was automatically renewed with no notification... cancelled my subscription, got a statement from my credit card and saw the charge of 107.00 called and talked to a representative was informed I was over 30 days out since they had done the charge and they would not refund... I had called the same day I received my credit card billing but I was 2 days past the cut off... so now I'm paying 107.00 for the next six months for nothing... as subscription is cancelled... BEWARE of this company! Very unhappy
Ancestry begin another ripoff today. They offer a 14 free trial but you must give your bank details before you can start the 'free' trial'. Under no circumstances do this as they will start taking payments from your account whether you cancel the free trial or not. They will continue taking funds even if you do manage to get through to customer service and cancel. This company is an out and out fraud they are based in Dublin and I cannot understand why the Irish police have not arrested the directors before now.
400 years from France that I can trace my ancestry. I should be french and native american but they have my ancestry only being 44% west european and no native american. I think the tests are very innaccurate. I got more from my cousin who traced our ancestry to the town in france. Don, t waste your money on this scam
I have done my research on my dad's side and I know the his father's side is part German, why was there no trace of that on my test? It's like it's all my mother's traits but I was doing research on my dad's side and came across some Jewish names which the test picked up a trace of that but not the German?
I ordered this straight for ancestry.com website. Vary unpleased. My DNA results did not have any background that I was expecting. When I called ancestry, they did not have a explanation for me why my DNA was so off base because my "ultimate Background" wasn't even included in the percentages. They also told me that there was no way they could have swapped my DNA or mix up of any kind. Like they do not make any mistakes, right? I even requested for them to send me another kit, I was also told that I would receive an email within 48 hours in which did not happen. $99 is a lot to loose considering there was no satisfaction on my side at all or even a communication of any sorts. Before you buy, PLEASE make sure you know about your ancestors of about their whereabouts before ordering, otherwise you will feel more lost after like I did.
Very bad service. I had a difficult time cancelling my subscription. I was promised reimbursement that never was fulfilled. Very disappointed in their customer service.
Almost nonexistent information data on Italy and Argentina. The help is worthless. I wasted a lot of hours for nothing.
What kind of business never answers their phone and ignores its customers? For all the publicity that this business does on television etc. it seems a bit surprising that they alienate potential customers. I would like to know why.
Why won't they send me my results? I got an online DNA report over a month ago but they wont send me the detailed report. It is impossible to get them on the phone. Customer Service is non existant. They have my money but now they don't care about delivering what they promised. I sent them the money in March. It's now June 22. Do NOT use an ancestry.com.
Ordered a kit. DID NOT subscribe. Now they charged me $150 subscription. Trying to cancel through website, there is an error and I can't cancel. Emailed them. There is no email support. Called them. They put me on hold for an hour. How do I cancel $150 charge that I never subscribed for?
My maiden name is McCawley. According to Ancestry I don't have a single drop of Scottish or Irish blood. That sure gives me a lot to thing about. So you're saying my Dad really isn't my Dad?
Also has issues calculating relationships when multiple lines line back to in. I pay for the global level, but am about ready to download into a software package & punt, since it so often locks up or is glacially slow. I have been on it since the beginning. But finally had to even take everything private to stopp messages from trolls nagging me re details they disagreed with, or for details I wasnt ready to share
Typifies buyer beware. While entering information for my tree on this site, I noticed 12 trees that had entered incorrect information either based on faulty research, pulling incorrect info from another family tree without researching to verify it was correct, or jumping to an erroneous conclusion. Since the information in question is about my immediate family, who is better to know, especially with documentation to back it up? I contacted the owners of the trees in question, and gave them the correct information, requesting correction. Nada. Nothing. Not even the courtesy of a response. Ancestry "cannot do anything" to correct the information except make the pictures I posted private. And what good will that do? Nothing. Because the trees that have already snatched/copied those pictures will remain and remain as public pictures. Under the wrong person. Right. If you decide to utilize this site anyway, be aware that the info you are looking at - unless it is a government document is more than likely bogus; quality control of information does not exist.
One guy brad b. Wrote how stupid people are for getting "scammed"... well, I don't know why HE's so uptight, if it didn't happen to him and these people didn't spend any of "his" money but it's not for me to understand! What I do understand is, if they are scammers then the SHAME is totally on Ancestry.com, NOT the consumer PERIOD... glad to hear everyone's reviews. As bad as I wanted to do this... I'll have to pass.
This definitely started with the DNA kit which I paid $100 for and never used due to not being able to set up the account it told me I had to setup to send in my kit.
In all the flurry of trying to get my DNA account set up, I started a subscription. Couldn't find the cancel button, which according to the site says if you don't have a cancel button... then you don't have an account.
Fast forward to this past week, my bank issued me a new card and emailed me a list of companies I was on auto pay with so I could update accounts.
Ancestry.com was there, today I have called now 4x in an attempt to get a refund. Each time being hung up on. Once even by a manager named Debbie.
Calling for time #5 now. At this point it's the principle more than anything. I also find my time to be valuable so I've earned the $149 as I'm on hold for now 8 minutes for call #5
I used my Grandmother last name because I already know the history of the name and many facts. The name is Elser which is of German origin. It started from Germans born on the elster river and was also the surname of Georg Elser who bombed the burgerbrau kellior where Hitler gave an annual speech on the anniversary of his failed beer hall putsch. Many Nazi's were killed but Hitler left 5 minutes before the massive bomb exploded. Georg was arrested in 1939 2 weeks aftyer the bombing and kept alive by Hitler, but killed days before the prison he was kept in was over runby the allies.Ancestor.com knew none of this. It's sup[osed facts were garbage and ridiculous. In fact I could have merely googled elser and got better information
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
