I have been a member of Ancestry since 2012. I always enjoyed it. Due to the financial mess that I have managed to get into, I had to cancel my subscription. Ancestry took their monthly fee out on June 16. I canceled (which I could have sworn that I canceled before that), and then Ancestry took another 21 dollars for canceling, which really threw my bank account off. I was already treading water; that little amount has left me without a dime. It seems that the more money that a company makes, the pettier they become.
I have spent several hours talking with 4 different customer service people with horrible results. My problem is a software proplem that started recently and the customer service people's answer was for me to spend over twice as much time to complete a task. I asked to speak to 2nd level support or a supervisor and I was told I would get a call back from them. That never happened. I was given an email address as a way to communicate and it was non-working. Unnaceptable from a service that I pay good money for.
I had upgraded my account and was not really impressed with the upgrade. Woke up to a charge for a renewal for the upgrade and immediately canceled (I also lost my job due to Covid and can't afford it). I emailed and asked if it was possible for a refund since it was an immediate cancel and they would not accommodate it. Now I'm out $150 for a service I done even like or use.
The Ancestry company is a SCAM. They would not refund me one day after my free trail which I though the 14th day. I then cancelled my membership, and they charged me a $25 cancellation fee and difficulty canceling their memberships after the free trial. This company should be closed down. I will tell my whole family to look at other Ancesrty tree companies.
After signing up as a guest all of a sudden 13 months later I see a $108 charge to my Paypal account! I never even FINISHED filling out the trial membership page! Over the 13 months they kept sending me "You forgot to finish your subscription request!" I guess finally they just decided to go ahead and bill me with what information they had already gathered! When I tried to complain, I got an automatic email reply saying they're updating their site and could I go fill out another form... which I did and proceeded to get the same email AGAIN asking me to go fill out the same form. When I called I never got through to a live person. AWFUL SERVICE!
I have enjoyed this web site for several yrs. Recently they made a lot of changes which are just AWFUL. Hard to see information and takes a lot more steps to get to where u want to be. Thinking about canceling my membership and using the free Family search which often has MORE information than ancestry.com. Just very DISAPPOINTING.
As I look on Ancestry at the "hints" for my relatives what I find are the photos I've uploaded and the extensive genealogy research I've done for 20 years (from books and digging through courthouse records and microfiche - not the internet) and uploaded to Ancestry. I am lucky if I find one new thing a year. It upsets me that Ancestry charges a huge monthly fee and makes money on my research! And I don't get anything out of it. I'm to the point that I am going to delete all my research from Ancestry and upload it to Familysearch.org.
I forgot that I had subscribed to a monthly trial subscription on Ancestry.com, until I received a notice from my bank that a payment had been made to Ancestry.com two days prior, for a 6 month subscription. I canceled the subscription both online and via telephone, where I was informed that Ancestry.com does not refund any of the amount paid. It's unfortunate that when canceling a subscription (particularly so early in the subscription period), Ancestry.com forces the customer to maintain the subscription until the next renewal. They claim that when cancelling the subscription that there will not be an automatic renewal fee. Therefore, Ancestry.com is not responsible for refunding any amount on monies to the subscriber.
My boyfriend bought me a kit for Christmas of last year. They say on their site it's supposed to take 6-8 weeks to process after they receive it. However I waited 6 months with no update from them and when I called customer service they told me they lost it. Literally. I was baffled but they refunded the shipping cost, and sent me a new kit. I thought all was well until I waited another 6 MONTHS once again with no update and when I called they told me they couldn't refund me and "hadn't received the sample" and when so far as to tell me I did something wrong on my end. Do not buy. Not only that but after not providing the service they advertised TWICE there was a sudden and unexplained "reoccurring charge" of $90. Which was more than the kit was even bought for as he had bought it on a promotion for Christmas. They also wouldn't refund that. I'm looking into taking them to small claims court or suing
I was excited to open my results. Pretty dissapointed in what I thought I would get vs what was received. All Iearned was that I came from areas of europe. I already knew that. No in depth info. They want ne to build my own tree. Guess I just dont get it...
Ancestry.com DNA results didn't match results two other companies, who did DNA test very well. Ancestry.com DNA result is very General and shows very high Eastern European ethnicity WITHOUT ANY breakdown, and shows map with a few dozens of countries without any specific percentage for each of them, including many Western European and Asian countries on the same map, It's pathetic! I contacted three times this company asking to correct or re-take the test, or issue refund, but they NEVER responded.
I have never opted in for a paid membership only a free trial because I was gifted a test, was combing through credit card bills on a shared credit card and they have been charging me for a year with absolutely no email notifications. This organization is purposely ripping people off. There are other better DNA sites out there…RUN FAR FAR AWAY FROM ANCESTRY
I've done this test 4 times and they continue to say there's a problem, I feel this place is a ripoff 4 times and I been waiting since June and it's always a problem. They either lost it or couldn't do the test this place is so unprofessional and should be ashamed of themselves.
You can easily do much of the research yourself and save yourself money. The quality of the site is subpar and the customer service is laughable. Sorry that I spent the time. The company is a sordid pile of rubbish and is hardly worth your while. Be forewarned that the company will charge your credit card yearly (even if you've canceled the account) without warning! Even if you've deleted your account and information, they will cunningly try to charge you a yearly fee and then feign lack of communication to sort everything out. Keep an eye on any current credit cards previously used for this site over the years. Very low. Very inept. The only service that seems to work with any consistency is the company charging your deleted account fee after fee.
I have had an ancestry account since about 2006, so this isn't a weekend freebie review. I had a paid account until they went into the non working downgrade they forced us to change to. Nothing works consistently on the site. For the price they charge they should not have daily issues such as... page not available... we're having problems... you have no hints (when you have over 1000) nor when you click on your tree should you get a message such as "We are currently unable to find the tree you are trying to access. We may be experiencing technical difficulties, or it is possible that the tree owner has removed this tree." Yes YOU ARE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES again! Since they jacked up the price and charge you for everything, their service has gone down to nothing. Its clear no one at ancestry has a family tree or the site would work and be user friendly. Every day there are issues with the site! I recently purchased an account due to special offer and in hopes they corrected their issues only to find everything has gotten worse. I have had nothing but problems of one sort or another so today I decided to do something better with my time. Warn Others! Join only if you don't plan to work on your family tree or unless you enjoy paying for "we're experiencing technical difficulties" and very little gets done on your tree! DNA tells you nothing really. Where your ancestors may have come from 60,000 years ago (one test they have) or where some came from. That test will show you people who might be related if they have an ancestry account.
Make sure you REALLY want the kit before purchasing, unless you want to lose half of the money you put down. Trying to contact customer service was a complete hassle, and when I finally got to talk to someone they couldn't help me and kept apologizing for it.
I've spent years using the company. They had the best system, best records, and it was easy to look at and read.
Today, all of that was junked.
They have reformatted everything to be usable as a APP which has destroyed the look, made it painful to read, made it clunky and slow, actually changed information inside some trees, and generally created a big FAIL. DO NOT USE THIS.
I signed up for a 14 day trial, cancelled, and they charged me two charges (one for a membership of $33) and one for $25 cancellation fee. They argued I signed up for 6 months. SCAM, SCAM. SCAM. AVOID.
They bombard you with upselling. You have to keep paying every month. Expensive. I paid for ancestry AND health. They stopped health so I never had it included and still paid for and expected it. Bad customer service.
I tried 23andme.
Health and ancestry together excellent! 23ANDME update frequently with new info. Very happy with 23andme
Extremely dissapointed and ticked off at Ancestry dna. Rip off
I have been a member for a long time. When I asked for a print of my tree I was referred to I believe it's called MyCanvas. They said they can't print from my tablet. I went back to Ancestry asking if I could pay for them to make a copy and mail it to me. The answer was no they weren't able to do that. A large firm like that can't make a print on one of their many machines. In addition I can't see my tree online. Where can I get the tree information?
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
Ancestry has a rating of 1.6 stars from 635 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Ancestry most frequently mention customer service, free trial and credit card. Ancestry ranks 4th among Genealogy sites.
