“Times change”

Des R.
6/6/24

Back in the days we didn't have such technologies, mark my words. Today we can explore the genealogy just using the mobile application which gives you insightful information about your origin. I ain't believe it's 100% correct, nevertheless it's way cheaper than applying to special labs or companies which are specialized in gathering your DNA and running comprehensive tests. Moreover it's more time-consuming than just using mobile application. So I pretty much favor them for this app.

“They will charge you if you are not diligent.”

I cancelled membership 1 day prior to a repeated monthly charge due date but was charged 2 days later. Customer service states there is no record of my cancellation. They did cancel this renewal and promised to refund this charge. I will update this review accordingly but this should not have happened to begin with. I am skeptical of this companies business tactics.

As I write this, I am still able to access the "Classic" format. I venture over to the new format a couple of times a week. They are slowly adding features that I use... BUT. There is more "clicking and scrolling" with your mouse. Not a big deal unless you have arthritis in your hands. The background colors are extremely difficult if you have vision problems. Also if you want to print something out, if the page has any color in the back ground you use a lot of ink. The "Classic" format was black print on white background.

Then, the one change that has many disgusted with Ancestry: Putting square or rectangle photos in a round circle. It looks horrible! Sure, they shrink down the photo to fit into the circle but then you have grey background surrounding that photo. It's ugly!

Funny, tho. I saw one of their new advertisements today. Those pictures on the tv screen are rectangle. They should show them shrunk down and fitted inside the grey circle.

My tree will be going private and my information will not be available to the public. That means that the subscribers will not be able to see what information I find and record on my ancestry tree.

Also, once the Classic view is no longer an option, I will be canceling my subscription.

Do not do not waste your money

What I received as results was 50% Baltic 50% Eastern European
Now that stretches over a very large stretch of The world

The advertisements and commercials make you feel that you're going to zero in on something that is unusual or something you did not know

They wouldn't even answer the phone when I called them but Amazon was outstanding and refunded my money

Again do not waste your time and money doing this

Very dissatisfied customer Delaware

Every one has secrets. I woke up to finding out my mother who owns her own "pedestal" the one she so proudly sat on and dictated to us 3 kids and how to be perfect every single day of our lives, is actually a big whore. 3 kids, 3 different Dads, and she had her husband for 50 years convinced he was the father. She made him pay child support after the divorce, she reminded us daily on how bad of a father he was, he "beat" her, he was "jealous", he was selfish, he was this he was that. She forgot to leave out she was a cheating lying whore and was having affairs with his best friends.

You may know who your parents are, but there are dirty secrets everywhere. While you think your DNA test may be harmless it may kill another. I have 20+ families members who have not ate, have not slept, who spilled more tears in a week then in 30 years. Grandma is not Grandma, Dad is not Dad, uncles, aunts cousins. My birth certificate is lie, my life is lie. I haven't worked in 4 days, my sister is contemplating suicide ready to go back to the nut ward. The man that raised me, my father is crushed. I have never seen him cry so much. There is so much agony. I wish this on NO ONE.

I used my Grandmother last name because I already know the history of the name and many facts. The name is Elser which is of German origin. It started from Germans born on the elster river and was also the surname of Georg Elser who bombed the burgerbrau kellior where Hitler gave an annual speech on the anniversary of his failed beer hall putsch. Many Nazi's were killed but Hitler left 5 minutes before the massive bomb exploded. Georg was arrested in 1939 2 weeks aftyer the bombing and kept alive by Hitler, but killed days before the prison he was kept in was over runby the allies.Ancestor.com knew none of this. It's sup[osed facts were garbage and ridiculous. In fact I could have merely googled elser and got better information

Beware of the Trial packages, they automatically renew using the credit card you provided during payment every 6 months. If you don't catch it they do not refund regardless of usage. Gotcha!

Limited data base in Asia region. I wanted to find out what is the specific ancestral region I belong to; instead, I received results stating "East Asia" which includes "Russia, China, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Palau" (copied directly from Ancestry website results). Ridiculous, right? I don't think that is sufficient information for $100 they ask for their test. The company does not disclose to public the fact that data from that part of the world is not available to them in the amount sufficient to break it down into more specific regions. I called customer service to claim at least partial refund, but after one hour spent on the phone, I was unsuccessful. They kept redirecting me from manager to manager and not answering questions directly. Although they admitted over the phone that they don't have enough data from Asia to break it down into more details as they do in other parts of the world, they said that they will not refund me. Such a fraud. I could have just threw $100 in a trash cane because the data they provided me with was not even supplemental to what I already knew.

Finally retired and able to devote time to a Digital Family History. This site
Is extraordinary at "connecting" family members. I have two "trees" going:
Birge Family Tree (married into), Harrington/Lee Family tree is my blood lineage.
My Harrington ancestor was a 2nd. Lieutenant in the 7th Cavalry... unfortunately with
CUSTER at LITTLE BIGHORN! Henry Moore Harrington... on Lee side we are related to Robert E. Lee who "lost the BIG ONE... THE ENTIRE SOUTH and at Jamestown settlement 1607 but killed by Indians! I have forgiven them since. Mrs. B. p.s. I KNOW... wrong place each time... oh, also... one of the Minute Men at Lexington so we "started" the war my other relative lost!

I started searching my family history 35 years ago in 1978. I have researched the Orlando Library (which has a remarkable family history center), the Miami Library, most importantly the DAR Library. Two family history libraries, one here in Winter Park, Florida and one in Washington DC. I stopped in Jacksonville to visit there library when I came out my passenger side window was smashed and $250 was stolen from my purse. So, you can see I was very serious about my mission.

I aplaud Ancestry.com. If you have any common sense and have a knowledge of American History, seek confirmation through the Internet or your family stories that have been passed down, they will provide you the information. It is up to you to verify information through many sources. I have been a member for many years, and they have provided links and historical information in one place that would have taken me years to uncover, most likely never. Yes, there is much miss-information, people eager to add names. But if you approach this will intelligence and and do some research, you will gather a family tree that is most likely accurate.

I don't trust this DNA test. Since having my DNA test, Ancestry has updated and chaged it so many time I don't know if my ancestors were Caucasian or Black. First it indicates a percentage of Africa, Ireland, Europe and a mixture of other regions, then it changed to Africa, German, India, Asia, now this last update I'm African, Ireland and Norway with the majority of Caucasian matches. Give me my DNA back!

I want to share our recent experience with Ancestry DNA, and it's not a positive one. My family and I embarked on this journey to discover our ancestry and hopefully find answers to some long-standing questions, but sadly, it has been a frustrating and disheartening process.

Firstly, the waiting time was excruciatingly long. It took nearly 2 months just to receive the DNA kit, and then another 5 weeks of waiting for results. Other private services offer much quicker turnarounds, making this delay seem unnecessary and frustrating.

The most devastating blow came when we were informed that my mother-in-law's DNA sample couldn't be processed, forcing us to start the entire process over again. We were even willing to pay for a faster delivery service, but we were told this wasn't an option, which left us puzzled and disappointed.

Now, we have the unenviable task of explaining to my mother-in-law that she has to wait another 3 months for results. This news has been emotionally distressing for all of us, and we're more concerned about her well-being than any timeframe.

While we understand the importance of accuracy in DNA analysis, the current process and communication from Ancestry DNA have been far from ideal. We had hoped this journey would bring closure and answers to our family, but instead, it has added to our emotional burden.

We sincerely hope that Ancestry DNA can improve their service to provide customers with a smoother and more efficient experience. Our family's quest for answers has been put on hold, and it's disheartening to say the least.

I had half of my ancestry back for over 8 generations about a year ago. Now I paid for another 6 months to finish the other side of my family.

I was going to finish the side of my family that I thought would be easier since I know those people and lived with them. I can't even find my grandmother's parents. When I was trying to find my mom's family it wouldn't even show her siblings. When I looked at my mother, my brother didn't exist. One of my aunts was put as dead. I called another aunt and asked if she died and she said. "No. She lives just a mile a way."

So I decided to just reinforce the family tree that I already had researched.

Everything I knew before is not there now. Ancestors that I knew all of their profile, Birth, spouse, death, parents and children is all gone. Now I cannot go back three generations and nothing makes sense.

I can only give up and just keep what I have and not be able to confirm any of my previous information.

My family tree with all of my ancestors is gone. What gives?

I feel sorry for any beginners.

I do not have any other resources. I tried Family Search but I believe both Ancestry and Family Search are one now. So neither of them work.

Ancestry have changed the algorithm to estimate heritage. My dad's heritage is different to mine and he is listed as 100 per cent Scottish/Irish which is news to both of us. Keep your money!

I started a free trial and realized immediately it was not something I wanted or needed! I CANCELLED immediately cancelled the subscription and have been charged EVERY MONTH since then which has been a total of $132.95! I have asked them to cancel and they have emailed saying it would cancel and continue to charge me! It has been such a PAIN IN THE $#*!! I cancelled my card and had a new one with a new number sent out and somehow they continue to be able to charge my card! The last email states it would take 30 days to cancel which is BS AND THEN THEY HIT MY CREDIT CARD ONCE AGAIN ON THE 31st day!

Tip for consumers:
DO NOT PUT A CREDIT CARD UP, they will ABUSE you and say they will cancel and still CHARGE YOUR CARD

Ancestry.com is a great tool if you love to see surprise charges in your account! They automatically renew your account and don't say a word:-)The monthly fee is 20$ for the very basic subscription, which I can't fathom because I certainly didn't see anything that was worth that price. Ancestry is makes you think its going to be some great service with their frilly ads that bombard every corner of the internet but really is just an over glorified and overpriced trend. There are many other resources that can be used to get double the information for half the price, and the day will come when ancestry will fall. Useless. Just a money maker. To top it all off, I called customer support at 10 pm. They say they are available until 11 pm. I couldn't get ahold of a representative because they said my estimated wait time was over 30 minutes. I know good and damn well their call volume was not that high at 10 o clock at night. Frauds. The least they could do is have semi competent customer support for the service you're paying out the $#*! for. If I could give less stars I would.

The Ancestry.com website is so SLOW, and yes it is their website because I can navigate quite quickly on any other website. I keep getting a message often that due to heavy traffic try again later. WELL... I need access my family tree NOW. Not later... It is very frustrating, I will NOT be renewing. And you all need to remember that you have to actually cancel your subscription before the term date whether it be the end of the two weeks free trail or if you renewed because if you do not actually cancel they WILL continue to take money from your account until you do. They also, need to update their servers to handle the traffic volume or get out 0f the business of CUSTOMER SERVICE cause they now are actually NO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I already had most of the ground work in hard paper copy I collected over 20 years of searching. THEN I used Ancestry/Archives at the local library. ALL was fine. Decided to get the 6month work deluxe for 149.00. ALL was fine. UNTIL, I started getting into information leading around Historic people/Events. I found TWICE a connector link had gone missing after I logged onto Ancestry. Oh, it left the kid, but without the parents, of that kid. Ya don't have a kid. Which is what/who was the connecter person leading to the next link of the tree. I Back tracked on my information. And it IS correct. So. I input it again. NOW, I don't know what the problem is on this kind of sites. BUT. I think its scam. A swindle... IM not renewing my subscription. Mid next month. Im done... AND since. Church of Latter Day Saints. Information has slowly vanished as well. Or refer ya to ancestry to view the item. And/or. Let you view after creating a "free" account and signing in. ONLY to not be able to sign in again. As the sign in and passwords. Dont work after the 1st time. I have tried everything. And still can't gain entry on that either now...
Bottom line. Ancestry is fine. TILL you get so far. After that. They block, pull, delete, info you had in your tree. Suggest ya keep a hard paper copy, a disk back up too..

Ancestry and MacKiev (Family Treemaker) teamed up to offer software to make it easier to keep a family tree synchronized between your computer and your online Ancestry tree.

The ability to synchronize has been down for about a month now and both Ancestry and MacKiev blame the problem on each other with neither willing to address and fix the issue.

If you are thinking of doing business with either company, DON'T.

Signed up for the 14 trial May 17 2012, decided to try it a month and used PayPal to pay for the service. After finding what I could about my family which really was no all that much I decided the service is very limited. My wife who really wanted to investigate her family found very little, so much she was really disgusted with the site. We decided to cancel the service online. Like many people out there, when you cancel something on their website you think it's all over, but nooooooooooo! Ancestry kept submitting bills to PayPal and PayPal kept paying for one year. I found out because I had to visit PayPal concerning an amount I paid for a book this year only to find Ancestry has been receiving $34.95 a month for 11 months. I called to cancel and found they do not reimburse monthly payments, only annual payments. So the lesson learned here is visit your PayPal account monthly to check what is being paid out. It shows up in your bank statements as "PayPal" with no separate statement. I personally wish karma on the business managers who decide not to pay back customers who honestly find the mistake. They are no different than thieves with business suits. Ancestry should think that bad publicity is worse than reimbursing a honest customer.

I used both Ancestry and My Heritage for the last two years and both I have now cancelled as they are both expensive and of little direct use to me with respect to searching BMD Records as my Family History is situated around Central Scotland. Effectively I have been paying a lot of money to use the Family Tree Charts layout which I can either us a Spreadsheet program or a free Family Tree application to do the same thing.
The only down side now in some ways is not having links to other Worldwide members who might have information that I have not yet found. But as a Senior citizen I can no longer justify the high price of these two applications on a hobby. Thank you Technoplod.

We are very fortunate that I live so far away from the ancestry headquarters. YOU JERKS HAVE A LICENSE TO STEAL PEOPLES MONEY. I HOPE EVERY ONE OF YOU ROT IN HELL!
