As others have stated, I almost was turned away from Backcountry by all the negative reviews. But I couldn't find what I wanted on sale elsewhere, and I didn't want to pay full price, so I decided to take a chance. Most of the negative reviews are about the return process. So I was very careful to read the item reviews and size charts. I got what I ordered within just a few days. I paid less than half of what it would have cost elsewhere. I am very happy with my purchase.
Thought I bought a new jacket, but when it arrived it was clearly used. I contacted customer service and they offered a $15 refund or $25 in store credit. I don't understand why they would accept a return from someone if the product was used. I don't think it is fair for BC to then sell the product as new. They could at least let the buyer know the product is in used condition. I will never purchase from this site again.
The use of lawsuits to bully other businesses over the term "Backcountry". It is a generic word widely used in the outdoor industry by many people, gear companies, guide services, and products since before backcountry.com even existed.
It had never been an issuer before and people understood that just because a product has the word backcountry in it does not mean it was produced or sold by backcountry.com specifically unless it was specifically labeled or branded with backcountry.com or its specific goat logo.
They will no longer get my business or get my recommendation to friends and clients as a place to find the gear they need.
Contrary to the average rating of 2.1, I have never had a problem with customer service or satisfactory returns. I guess I'm lucky enough to live within 30 minutes of a major retail store? I don't purchase as much now as I used to, but it's still one of my goto websites for outdoor equipment. Love the Goat!

Their people are not empowered to make customers happy, they were selling an item on Backcountry and Steep/Cheap, but posted the lower price after I bought, same company, two different prices, they would not price match their own discount site. The assistant said her Manager would not let her price match an internal site... We are talking $30, really... to make their customer happy... Not sure I would purchase from them again, great service but really your own site! The agent said always check Steep & Cheap before buying on BC, great idea, I will now check everyone site and buy else where I guess. One disappointed customer.
I would rather buy the products from the official sites of the brands. Contrary to the return policy, Backcountry will never refund you to your bank card. I have returned the unused items but have only received the store credits. I contacted the customer service, they kept me waiting on the lines several times without the issues being resolved. It was a total waste of my time! I will never purchase in the future at Backcountry again!

While I prepare for our UPS driver to arrive, I would love to take a moment and thank backcountry.com. I am SO impressed with how quickly my order was processed and shipped. Wow, a great deal and FREE shipping. As a minimalist, I may not be the greatest customer but backcountry.com will get all of my future business nonetheless. Nice work, BC.
And a special shout-out to UPS!
I see all the negative reviews and that must have prompted them to turn things around... I made a purchase for a sweater and received it in 2 days. The sweater is well made and incredibly warm, my partner just preferred a different sweater as I had purchased a few before Christmas to have options. I called to place a return with customer service and was on the phone with someone in under a minute and a shipping label sent to me in the next minute. Highly recommend, if just to give some of their clothing a try if you're interested. It worked out incredibly well and I'll likely look to see what they have for clothing options in the future. Thanks for the great experience.
I ordered some stuff. I was over the free shipping threshold.
They emailed me that one item was out of stock, was there a replacement item I might want instead? Ok, fine, it was a pair of clearance socks
And there was another print in the same style and size. Should be easy, right?
Nope. They ring it as a whole separate order and charge me $5.95 shipping for a replacement item for something that was to ship free.
Totally deceptive. Not even sure I believe the original was out of stock, since $6 to ship a pair of socks is a nice little pad to margins.
I will not use Backcountry again.

Ordered a coat from them and it took over 2+ weeks for delivery and size way off. I have been trying to contact them for return and no replies! Everything I have now found on the company makes me regret purchasing this. Stay away!
I have made a purchase from Backcountry before from Canada and the shipping took a long time but the item arrived eventually and was as expected. This time, I was able to find a price match for an item that I wanted to buy and was thrilled because the cost to ship to Canada is quite high, but the pack that I'm looking at was older stock so few websites sell it, and of them, not all will ship to Canada.
Enter the most thick, impossibly obtuse sales rep I have ever spoken to: Matt A. In a series of run-around responses, he refused to honour the price-match policy that's actually written onto their site. It's absurd. Apparently, the competitor's warranty doesn't match Backcountry's, so they would not price match the item. That would be fine, had it been written into their site but it is distinctly not there. It's just maddening enough to make me drop the cart entirely. I'll keep looking elsewhere.
No response after numerous emails about the status of my order. Finally, cancelled the order but they never credited to charge back to my credit card. Not a company that I will ever attempt to do business again. Buyer beware.
I ordered 3 items which took over 4 weeks to arrive as they came from China. I thought I was ordering from a cool, fun US company given their facebook page but I was wrong. The 2 dresses I ordered are both see through and of poor quality. I ordered the sailor mugs and same thing-very cheap.
Steer clear!
Order wrong item by mistake on Saturday
Tried to contact them send email chat etc
No response on Sunday I get a mail the package has shipped tried to call again and they actually answered
Asked to cancel but it was already shipped on Sunday
They kindly offered a return label for an item that I don't want or have use for a waste of two weeks of my time will never ever ever buy from them again ever!
Tip for consumers:
Will never buy from them again

backcountry.com's corporate bully tactics regarding the enforcement of the copyright of the word "backcountry" are reprehensible. I will be taking my business elsewhere and supporting ethical businesses that don't engage in this kind of nonsense.
Backcountry Has decided to trade mark this word and Sue anyone using it? What a joke! I could never support a company who would do something like this. I understand trade marking Except when is something so common. They picked this name because it was being used and now have decided to let no one else use it.
Mike in customer service was incredibly helpful and had eternal patience as my daughter went back and forth on which backpack she wanted. The price we paid was the best out there online and shipping was fast and free. We can't wait to shop here again!
I purchased a Filson hat as a Christmas gift. The hat was too big so I returned it. Backcountry has acknowledged receiving the return but has not refunded the purchase price. Over the last 6 weeks I have contacted them multiple times by email and phone. The story changes each time I talk contact them. The refund is being processed, the refund has been processed my PayPal account will be credited in 3-5 days, and the hat was used and I will get store credit (not used only tried on). Do not do business with this fraudulent company.

I got my skis, boots, bindings, and poles all at once. Everything was found for me by one of the people you can chat with, who said that he would send them out with the bindings mounted. (2 free day shipping) The package arrived on time and I opened it to find the bindings were not mounted. I talked to them again and they refunded my money. I brought them to a ski shop and got them mounted. I then found out they had found the wrong boots for my bindings! I contacted them again and they told me to exchange them, and I did. Last, I come to find the basket on the ski poles will not screw on! Over all the experience was pretty bad. But I didn't give them a one star because other than the poles everything seems pretty good quality and most of the people on the chats were very nice and helpful.
I placed an order by phone to Backcountry the other day. I was helped by Zach Higgins. He was very knowledgeable, and made the buying process as smooth as silk. He even did a follow-up call to make sure I was happy with the purchase.
Great customer service has became a rarity. Thanks to Zach, and the wonderful, speedy service that was provided, Backcountry will be the first place I check for a lot of my outdoor needs. Thanks a bunch. I can't wait to try out the #Scarpa Rebel Pro GTX this winter!
Backcountry used to be a good company. Maybe it was never good. It has come to my attention through various sources that they are now suing other companies over the word backcountry. I will no longer support them as a company and will choose to support other companies who share the love of the outdoors more than profit margins. I hope you do too.
Quality products and fair prices. Sometimes you can't find the specific product you need from an amazon or something. Backcountry specializes in out door apparel and gear for the active person. The online outlet I have found to be very fair prices and great selection.
Extremely fast service, personal touch with an account manager (Fritz) calling and emailing to check on my order before shipping it out. I'm VERY impressed! Extremely competitive pricing and great gear! Will order from them from now on!
I received a gift from here and returned it within one week of them shipping it! They claimed I wore the ski suit because the tags were missing so it will be a store credit. I see they do this often with their customers. I live in new york, there is no snow in october so I am not sure where I would ski within one week of receiving an item
When I stated that… the gear head changed it to a streak of gray on leg. I not only opened the package only bedroom, itdid not go more than one foot from its original box it came in. It was sent back the same way it came all original including the shipping box. I am reporting this company to the better business bureau and ask everyone with this same claim to do the same. My credit card will fight the charge as well. Horrible horrible horrible
People! I am in retail and would never ever treat a customer like this under any circumstance. Just gross!
I ordered 15* down bag for my daughter's birthday. In 3 uses, she couldn't get warm. Asked for customer service help. "Too bad you didn't know our return policy." I'd give them negative stars if that was an option.

I am a lawyer who practices class action litigation. My law firm is investigating claims that Backcountry's Amazon return policy is deceptive. On Amazon, the company says that consumers my return unused gear "at any time." But, the company will deny returns for being too old.
If this happened to you, please contact me at *******@gutridesafier.com, or *******390.

Threatening non-profits that promote activities and awareness among people who probably come to your site to buy gear anyway? Really? C'mon man. Hopefully your great front line employees will be able to find new jobs. I enjoyed their customer service and support but unfortunately, the greedy corporate suits running the show seeking higher profits while ironically killing your company in that pursuit have made it clear that your company's values don't reflect my own so I will shop elsewhere.
The real backcountry... untamed, untrademarked, mother nature, was here long before your company existed and will be here long after it ceases to exist, which is probably a lot sooner than you might have imagined.
Outdoor gear and clothing from big brands to the small and undiscovered. Find everything you need for your next adventure at Backcountry.
